We had a scare last Christmas where our power went out for 3 days and we were snowed in. My hedge went into hibernation from the cold and I held him by our fire place in a hoodie until he woke up. After an hour I was scared that at this point he needed a vet but we were stuck in our house so I just stayed with him. After 5 hours of sitting by the fire he woke up! He’s 3.5 years old and I’m very thankful he’s okay :)
They can also have dog food as long as you crush it first. In fact it may fit they're needs better! The main reason why people lean toward cat food is because the bags are often smaller. hope this helps!
Definitely! Cat food is recommended more because of the small bags, yes, but also because the already small kibble pieces means no one needs to crush the foods :) But as long as a dog food is within the requirements and is small enough, it can be used! :)

You should definitely add other things to their diet for variety, especially insects. Their bodies are designed to thrive off of chitin, which is something on insects can really provide. Meats and eggs are also great to add to their diets. You can add fruits and vegetables, but they don't properly digest cellulose so you want to use those sparingly. :)

The food I use specifically is from Pet People here, but Fromm has a store locator on their website. If she’s tiny, I’d recommend feeding a higher fat food, yes. That or free feeding moderate fat ones until she puts on some weight. Volcano View Hedgehogs has a kibble list on their website that can be a helpful resource/jumping off point if you need help finding foods within a hedgehogs nutritional needs! (: It is listed by guaranteed analysis so you’ll be able to see the ones with higher fats.

The link doesn't work anymore....I use Instinct for my cats and dogs which is a very high quality food, I'm not sure of the % I'd have to look, but I'm hoping they're right for a hedgehog for when I get mine. I believe some Instinct has grain but I'd double check before giving it to the hedgehog obviously. I don't think everything they make is grain-free

Only thing id like to point out it the ingredients list for the fromm mature gold contains cheese and hedgehogs are lactose intolerant. This is of course no dig at her for feeding her babies this. Clearly this food works got them and thier tummies

DIYnailer Dubia Roaches & crickets are great staples! Mealworms, waxworms, and superworms are more of treats, unless your hedgehog is underweight, in which case all are great choices as they are high in fat!

Hi there. I live in south africa and i have a Madagascan tenrec hedgehog. Jade is only a couple months old. I think under a year. The pet stores and the lady i night Jade from recommend to give her kitten food aswell as meal worms. But from the start Jade hasn't eaten the kitten pellets at all and it got to a point where i stopped giving it to her. Now later down the line where she now has a lot of dry skin. The lady told me that she must have the kitten pellets. So i have put it back in her cage and have even tried to feed her the kitten pellets. And she just doesn't want to eat it at all. Is there a way i can get her to eat it? And is there any other things i can give her that she can eat and is good for her?

I just bought some cat food for my hedgie louis, but it has 39% Protein and 16% fat but 70%meat, 30% Greens and 0% Grains. The package is 300g and was quite expensive. Can i feed my hedgehog that food and change it when its finished? He‘s around 10 weeks btw

Hey I’ve heard that the food exotic nutrition makes is good and the brand Spikes Delight is good. What’s your thoughts? I’ve been feeding Spikes Delight because that’s what the breeder I got my hog from was using, I’ve been using that for a year now. Do you think I should switch to cat food?
I do think you should make the switch. If you browse the ingredients of both of the foods you mentioned, they’re incredibly poor quality and low grade in comparison to what a hedgehog actually needs, unfortunately!
When it comes to changing food, with all animals, i make sure i always have some of the old food left and then mix 75 old 25 new for a day or 2/3 then 50/50 and then 75 new 25 old before switching to the new food completely. It has never failed me *knock on wood*
@@itschrsz Hi, when i buy a new brand of food i just put new kibble in the bag with the old kibble (about as much as is left of the old so you have a 50/50 mix) after a few days i add some more of the new food and then when it's all gone i use the new food. So their stomach get's used to the new food gradually. Hope this helps ☺

@@itschrsz yes you can just start adding new kibble in with the old in the bowl. If you want to make a mix of multiple new kibble i would start mixing them in one type at a time just to be safe.

Can you make a video showing how you store & handle live worms? I'm super scared of worms but wanna acclimate myself to them to do the best for the hedgehog I'll be getting soon. I know even the worms are nocturnal but I believe they do still move during the day when picked to feed hedgie. I wanna know if the worms pull any jump scares.🤣 is it okay if I feed only crickets and not worms? P.s., love your videos! Gave me all the insights needed to care for a hedgie.
Not sure if you’ll see this but these worms aren’t really slimy or fast! You can store them in a refrigerator (NOT FREEZER, made that mistake once 😅) and they’ll stay dormant until you’re ready to feed.
From what i have found out, there is no specific weight that a hedgehog has to be within range to as long as it has a healthy body shape that isn't like a peanut type or round to the point they can't curl up into a ball. You can also tell they're overweight because they sometimes get a "double chin".
I would love to have hedgehog someday. I have a poodle that bark really high pitch all the time. Will that hurt hedgehog's ears since they got sensitive ears? I can keep a door close in my room but she's still loud. Will that bother it?

Being away from your hedgehog that long would definitely negatively effect your bond, plus they need to be checked on regularly. If you get a pet, I’d suggest getting one that both of your parents are okay with so you can have a cage set up at both homes. As far as feeding goes, if a hedgehog is free feeding you would just leave food out for them but I typically did not free feed my hedgehogs and needed to refill bowls daily.
Depending on the age of the baby you give them a formula if you don't have a mama hedgehog to be feeding the baby, and every other week you would give it more of a solid type of food, like baby or wet cat food to introducing kibble of your choice. As you introduce food that is more on the solid side, you will start leaning them of the milk or formula. This may not be 100% accurate so make sure to do your share of researching to do the best for your baby hedgehog.

I was feeding my girl what the breeder was feeding which was the kitten chow. I just switched her to the blue buffalo and she loves it way more.

Dolphin Productions slowly get rid of it, if you change it immediately it will stress it out

I feed freeze-dried strawberries / freeze dried crickets / freeze dried mealworms / exotic nutrition hedgehog booster multivitamins / Fancy Feast cat food / ranchaelray cat food / and exotic nutrition berries and bugs food.

When it comes to changing food, with all animals, i make sure i always have some of the old food left and then mix 75 old 25 new for a day or 2/3 then 50/50 and then 75 new 25 old before switching to the new food completely. It has never failed me *knock on wood*

@@itschrsz Hi, when i buy a new brand of food i just put new kibble in the bag with the old kibble (about as much as is left of the old so you have a 50/50 mix) after a few days i add some more of the new food and then when it's all gone i use the new food. So their stomach get's used to the new food gradually. Hope this helps ☺
@@itschrsz But for my hedgehog i use 3 different kinds of kibble and just mix them together in a tub. So there is variety in the ingredients.

Another thing is, can i just start adding 2 DIFFERENT kinds kibbles in a bowl? should i change her to new food first then mix it with old kibbles? (it means 2 different kinds of brand/kibbles in a bowl, old brand + new brand)(for varieties)
@@itschrsz yes you can just start adding new kibble in with the old in the bowl. If you want to make a mix of multiple new kibble i would start mixing them in one type at a time just to be safe.

Can you make a video showing how you store & handle live worms? I'm super scared of worms but wanna acclimate myself to them to do the best for the hedgehog I'll be getting soon. I know even the worms are nocturnal but I believe they do still move during the day when picked to feed hedgie. I wanna know if the worms pull any jump scares.🤣 is it okay if I feed only crickets and not worms? P.s., love your videos! Gave me all the insights needed to care for a hedgie.
Not sure if you’ll see this but these worms aren’t really slimy or fast! You can store them in a refrigerator (NOT FREEZER, made that mistake once 😅) and they’ll stay dormant until you’re ready to feed.

From what i have found out, there is no specific weight that a hedgehog has to be within range to as long as it has a healthy body shape that isn't like a peanut type or round to the point they can't curl up into a ball. You can also tell they're overweight because they sometimes get a "double chin".
I would love to have hedgehog someday. I have a poodle that bark really high pitch all the time. Will that hurt hedgehog's ears since they got sensitive ears? I can keep a door close in my room but she's still loud. Will that bother it?
+Taylor Lee At first, yes, it'll likely startle your hedgehog. After a while though, they adjust to the noises they're repeatedly exposed to.

Being away from your hedgehog that long would definitely negatively effect your bond, plus they need to be checked on regularly. If you get a pet, I’d suggest getting one that both of your parents are okay with so you can have a cage set up at both homes.
As far as feeding goes, if a hedgehog is free feeding you would just leave food out for them but I typically did not free feed my hedgehogs and needed to refill bowls daily.

Depending on the age of the baby you give them a formula if you don't have a mama hedgehog to be feeding the baby, and every other week you would give it more of a solid type of food, like baby or wet cat food to introducing kibble of your choice. As you introduce food that is more on the solid side, you will start leaning them of the milk or formula.
This may not be 100% accurate so make sure to do your share of researching to do the best for your baby hedgehog.

Pippy Poppy, anointing is typically white and foamy and they usually just spit it on their backs. But do more research, I'm not 100% sure.
