- Frank Sinatra released this In the Wee Small Hours in 1955 on the album of the same title. Sinatra had been going through a low point in his career. His young crowd appeal had faded and a number of troubles had begun to enter his life - primarily, in relation to this album, the breakdown of his marriage to Ava Gardener.
The melancholic mood through the album changed peoples perception of Sintatra. The new, introspective approach was well received by fans and this signalled an upward climb in his success.
The guitar used here is a 1939 spec Gibson L5 with a "Charlie Christian" neck pickup. The mic is a Telefunken U47 - the same model that Frank Sinatra was famous for using. - Hudba

May I ask a technical question? Is the audio signal really just recorded with that single mic that we see in the foreground? Are there any pre-amps involved?
Hey you’re welcome! That’s a good question. I did run the guitar into a fender tweed twin which you can just see over to the right of the shot. It was picked up with a stereo mic but I wound all the tops off and just captured the low end, as the tops kind of interfered with the U47. Gives the guitar a bit of width.
