In the Hotel scene she was looked at as strange because she is from the south and looked "country" to the other people. Chicago was a hip place to be in the 20s for black people so if you notice everyone was dressed nice and sophisticated. Ma is dressed flashy with bold makeup, gold teeth and her chest almost coming out of her dress. That is why they were looking at her like she did not belong. Back then a lot of black people in the north thought they were better than southern blacks...Even Chadwicks character told Toledo that he was a "sharecropper" because of his shoes....I think the director was trying to show some of that.

I want to add to the fact as far as the hotel scene, Ma Rainey was a known lesbian. Of course that was frowned upon in the 1900’s, as homosexuality is still unacceptable in several circles today. So all of that contributed to their reaction to her.

@@melorichardson4164 Very good point! I did not think of that side of it you are right. I guess to a lot of people she just did not belong in so many ways. What a shame.

Great point about the country blacks being looked down on by Northern Blacks. That is so true. Other plays and stories I've read from this period of time expressed similar sentiments and embarrassment of southern Black life.

Also, Ma expressed to the studio head that she didn’t like the north anyway and that she could take herself back down south.

The acting in this movie was so powerful. They should win Oscars for these performances.

wow what a brilliant review. I enjoyed the movie and it was funny and sad at the same time. I loved the tension which finally reaches a heartbreaking climax and as much as i hated Levee's character at first but i was also compelled to emphathize with him and Ma's stubbornness while it seemed annoying was also a way of protest and standing her ground

I love how it seemed as if i was in the room watching something im not supposed to watch.
I was deeply saddened at the end where they showed us how pop/rock music started.
This movie was for grown folks......

They both were great but I think it was Viola's movie. She had a stronger performance.

The reactions come from her being an open lesbian in the early 1920s.
