How to Trim a Horses Mane with Scissors (and make it look AMAZING!)

  • Sometimes you just can't pull a horses mane because they don't like it or their mane is already very thin. Here is a method of cutting a mane that works and looks good.
    1). Brush the mane out so its free from any tangles
    2). Hold your scissors at about a 45 degree angle ( pointing at 10:00 on a clock)
    3). Make cuts along the mane, starting with big cuts and finishing with smaller and smaller cuts once you get the mane the correct length
    4). Brush the mane out between each pass over with scissors
    5). For even more feathering you may hold your scissors so they would point at 11:00 or 11:30 on a clock
    Tip:
    Leave the mane longer than you think you need, you can always go back and cut more later

    Thanks for tip. I've never had horses but my girlfriend has 1 large and 2 Shetlands. She has let them all go to shitt. So I've been mowing the dead grass fields off and mending fences. I know what I am doing after dinner now, sprucing up the friendly Shetland! 😉

    It looks so nice and neat! I need some help tho, any tips on making it not look like a bowl cut? When I did mine, it looks like a did a bowl cut lol. 😂 I'm not the best with scissors. Any tips on trying to point cut?

      No worries! Sounds like you need to even it out in the middle more. Keep holding the scissors at 10-11 o'clock and take tiny amounts off the middle til it looks straighter. With practice it will get easier 🙂 Hope this helps!

    I'm about to give my horse a bowl cut, I just know it. It's fine though. I can't keep the wind knots out of his mane and he's not a fan of getting his mane brushed so we're going short on his wispy white mane.

      Bowl cuts are in! At least that's what your horse will tell his friends in the pasture. Just kidding!🤣 You'll do great! Don't take too much off at first and always make your cuts at an angle or straight up and down and you'll nail it 😃

    I have cut my horses manes for shows but I really don't like doing anything to the mane other than brushing it

      That's great too as there are many ways to braid long manes that look amazing as well if you need it out of the way for shows.

    My issue is length. My horse has a very long mane, but he isn't a show horse, and so it is a bit annoying and in the way. No videos here of how to decide how much to cut off. UGH

    • @TopFlightEquestrian
      @TopFlightEquestrian  Před rokem

      It is a personal decision on how much to cut off. Generally speaking if you horse needs traditional button braids then the mane will need to be shorter to make it look good. If you don't have to braid you can have as much freedom as you want on length. What length do you like? Even if the horse isn't a show horse I like a shorter mane since I find that the mane gets caught up in the reins sometimes, but this is just a personal preference. Hope this helps!
