  • HOW TO PROFESSIONALLY LOWER VW T4 SUSPENSION (by 100mm or more!) This week we take our project VW T4 and absolutely slam it on the floor!
    We show you how to remove and 'clock' the front torsion bars, modify the front chassis rails to fit Shanes-Plates from Scarface Lowriders, fit shortened drop links and new front shock absorbers by Gaz.
    At the rear we fit new 5" Faulkner springs, Powerflex shims and Gaz adjustable rear shocks. We keep everything in place with retaining before lowering the van down and cruising along the beach.

    I’m amazed the opinion of most T4 owners still is that you can’t lower a T4 more than 50mm.Shane at scarface lowriders front mounts were a revelation a few years ago and I’d run them on my T4 with 5inch Faulkner’s for the last few years.I actually cut and re-welded the rear bumpstop cups back in but about 40mm shorter.As for slammed.I’d call this a sensible lowering with no affect on the ride.It’s been done right.It just gets the word out to the masses what’s possible with the right products.🤙🏼Well done.

    Great video! Interesting that the subframe has to drop and the tank as well to gain clearance to get the torsion bars out. Another video I watched showed the process of swapping in new upper control arms and the guy was able to reach the bolts at the end of the torsion bar (where it meets the upper control arm) via stacking multiple ratchet extension and going in all the way from the rear (back where the torsion adjustment bolts are.) would the torsion bar not just be able to slide out towards the back without dropping the subframe and gas tank?

    Always interested in your instructional videos and the T4 restoration and watch regularly. However, struggled with this one - lowering surely worsens the ride and the handling in real world conditions and does it really look any better? But hey, it’s your van and your money so if it floats your boat! Just hope the wheel arches get some attention soon!

    I don't think I'll have to clock the bars on mine ? I haven't looked yet but I was told I'd likely have pink bars on my 2002 ACV 2.5 TDi LWb....which would be massively handy haha

    Hi guys,
    Nice job. Watched it multiple times. However, ive also gained some more info on the web and came with some questions:
    Clocking the torsion bars will only gain more low instead of an increased springrate right?
    Do thicker torsion bars realy improve springrate significantly? Or other worda, is it worth the job to change to for instance pink bars?
    Why not notching the front chassis and subframe as Scarface boys do all the time? I thought they do that so the t4 does not constanly touch the subframe while compressed suspension?

    Great video, can I suggest you put some lighting under vehicles, in wheel arches when filming.
    You have him levels of sound and production on your channel. It’s great. However it would help the viewers if you could light up the underside , footwells , when arches , rear of the vans etc.
    I’m not sure if you will see this comment. Your channel is great, and has helped me out with my own caddy van mods. So thanks for all the advice, contacts for materials and quality information.

I've done a medium distance journey (180miles) and it's been borrowed to help my friend move house. All without any problems or bottoming out the suspension. If you like it that's all that matters. Nice job! Personally I have my T4 at stock ride height but 245/45/R18s on. They fill the wheel arches and do make the van look a little lower. Side bars give a great illusion of the vehicle being lower too. I would never consider lowering as I have fresh and grey water tanks slung underneath.

      Obviously is necessary to do something with the camber setting limits? With the factory limits I was able to adjust the camber after lowering my T4's front only 35 mm so, that tire's inside-chewing stopped. So this after-lowering wheel alignment info would be definitely greatly appreciated.

    • @cjay1262
      @cjay1262 Před 7 měsíci

      @@rayokas69 Thanks for the response.! I have taken it to get wheel alignment and they tell me there is nothing they can do about adjusting camber. Even though i pointed out that there are bolts to make adjustments. Do i try another shop, or, are these bolts extremely limited.
      I was also looking into getting aftermarket camber bushings. But, not sure if its necessary.

    How to professionally fudge up the T4 suspension.
    Though it definitely looks cool, don't use the words lowering and handling in the same sentence here. What has been done here, is for looks and looks only. And you probably secretly know it.
    On load (literally, or while cornering, in bump or on the brakes) you'll hit the severely shortened bumpstops so hard, it'll instantly cause an infinite spring rate, followed by a violent rebound.
    On the rear...
    Deleting the rear bumpstops is even worse. When using the van in any practical way, it's going to kill the rear shocks...
    ...or it's going to stack the rear coil at bump, causing them to lose their initial spring rate (read sag).
    This is ok for showcars, but for and application usable for the road.
    Try a spirited drive in the wet (where you know you have better roadholding or quite the opposite), and you'll know you went down the wrong path. You're going to regret it.
    Unless it's for "streetcred" at the local McD. In that case: two thumbs up. You nailed it.

      @@Paul_VanGo fair enough - but having driven a T4 standard and like this I can assure you from first hand experience that the handling is significantly improved. It’s not intended to be a race set up but drastically reduces body roll while ensuring plenty of travel. I’ve been driving T4’s for 10 years and can promise you McDonald’s has in no way motivated my suspension set up! It’s functional as well as more visually appealing (to me!). Anecdotally, although not an automotive engineer I am a chartered mechanical engineer.

  • @Eurocano
    @Eurocano Před 3 lety

    Funny job but far from profesional. you loweret by 100 mm but a T4 can't be lowered more than 50mm. your rear brakes valve for load will not have any margin for regulation and your break will not compensate for extra load so when your break you will break more back than in the front and yor car will swing like a spinning top. Thas why your lowering is not profesional but pretty amanteur and dangerouse. BUT PRETTY COOL ;-))
