      Edgier and more violent, yet somehow _less_ mature with its writing.

    I am actually really disappointed in how they portrayed the previous avatars. In the original, they were portrayed as wise and burdened individuals that instead of shouting and making Aang feel like sh*t, they imparted their experiences and knowledge onto him. They were not there to criticise Aang but to guide him. In this adaptation, it just felt sooo off. None of the Avatars felt like the original. Roku was by far the most disappointing. I don't know why they decided to cast/direct him like that. It did not feel like Roku at all but almost a parody of the original. We didn't get much of Avatar Kuruk in the original but from what we do know, he was a "go with the flow" avatar. In this adaptation he just seemed so miserable instead of regretful for losing the person he loved to Koh because he wasn't active enough. The fact that in the live action, Aang says that he is alone and that he can't get help from the previous incarnations is so sad because then what the h*ll is the point of having them there? After those portrayals, I just can't see how they are going to backtrack and change it. This had so much potential to be good because there were definitely some strengths here and there, especially with the designs. It seems like no one will get it right, best to just stick to the original.

      They saw the fandom using the term "going full Kyoshi" and decided to make her being aggressive and angry her only personality trait. Nevermind the fact that there are two entire novels written about her. Nah lets put her in the show for a few minutes so she can yell at Aang.

    Why does Ozai need to be a less divisive villain? He's the main antagonist of the entire show. There is nothing wrong with having a static villain. Complex villains are great, but so are super mega evil villains who just love being evil are great too.

    • @AnonTDegenerate
      @AnonTDegenerate Před 4 měsíci +3

      Especially since the original made 3 main archetypes work.
      Ozai was static and pure evil.
      Azula was a mix, being understandable, sympathetic but not redeemable, and stayed pure evil.
      Zuko was dynamic. He was sympathetic and redeemable.

    • @G3NTOK1
      @G3NTOK1 Před 4 měsíci +1

      I feel like villains nowadays have been made too sympathetic because they saw people online simping over them and saying how they should be redeemed. Like what makes a character sympathetic REGARDLESS of their choices is their behavior and responses to things.
      For example: Azula. She is a villain but she was also a child who was raised in a home with little to no love. She thought her mom didn’t love her, deep down I think she knew her dad didn’t really love her, and she rejected anyone else’s love that was thrown her way. This is was makes her character beautifully written and tragic, this is what makes you sympathize with her despite her being evil.
      Going off topic, this is why in my eyes she doesn’t really need redemption although had the comics been written better, it could’ve worked. I hate how many people are undermining the sad representation of both she and Zuko. They both came from an abusive household with one who keeps the cycle abuse going (Azula), and the other who stopped the cycle (Zuko.)
      It’s okay to sympathize with Azula and want her to become better, but what’s the point of pushing that on a character who has obviously been written to do the opposite? Sure characters and people change throughout their life and can go from being a terrible person to a great one, but half of the people who want a redemption for Azula are the same ones who barely even acknowledge the very people who had to grow from their terrible ways.
      Lol sorry for the rant

    Removing Sokka's sexism hurts both Katara and Suki's stories which was really disappointing, and it feels like the writers/showrunners did not understand the impact that one change would have (it neuters Katara/doesn't let her show her anger/emotion and totally undermines Sokka/Suki's initial meeting which is now a generic romcom "Awkward teens flirt" story). Even Sokka is less interesting because instead of having meaningful character growth that also explains WHY Suki likes him, we just get a guy who's is a bit lacking in self-confidence but is more mature and fully formed than the animated version
    It's just a baffling change where you remove a ton of good stuff to get....a safer/blander Sokka?

    I just don't understand the changes they made. The biggest question is just WHY? Making the series more dark and serious is not a good change if that means all the characters are also only dark and serious. It's a bad thing if it reduces character traits and personalities.
    Changes should add things but not at the cost of others. First episodes war scene is a nice new thing but it should have been added only if the core story has been written and filmed perfectly or even greatly. Why we use time and budget for big war scene when there is no real interactions, casual conversations and bonding between the main trio?
    I like the secret tunnel meme but again that wasn't necessary. I would even cut Momo since him and Appa didn't have really any matter or characterisation through the season.
    I'm afraid of season 2 mainly because of Toph. They couldn't give time for these 3 characters so how they are gonna handle the whole group and their dynamics when they add one more in it?

      That for me is all true, I didn't like that Aang had no character development, imo, Sokka's character development, completely gone, just eye candy for Suki, (which to me is sexist in a different way, Sokka no longer is a boy who needs to learn and grow, he's a buff dude with muscles and Suki likes the muscles, and they kissed, and storyline works "even better" now, 🤦🏾‍♂️, and Katara, with no anger, no passion, no real emotion, or drive at all to become a PROPER master water bender, Aang didn't bend a drop of water in season 1, season 2 is earth, and 3 is fire...yet we never seen him learn water first, lastly, Zuko didn't say honor once, (which hurt me, lol), Azula and Ozai were...off, she no longer is the manipulative perfectionist,she was so...plain, boring, not scary, at all, and shown to much, and Ozai...should've not gotten that far into the Agnai Kai, he's supposed to walk to Zuko, no emotion, scar him for disobeying a direct order, and Zuko as a CHILD should have been at his fathers knees, begging for forgiveness,as he knew what he did was out of line, (again,in my opinion).
      I'm terrified they're gonna butcher Toph, they already ruined the surprise of the library next season, as well as the whole arc with Aang & Katara, and the secret tunnel, my favorite earth bender next to her daughters and Kuvira from Season 4 of LOK, they ruined Bumi too, for me at least, let's hope season 2 is at least watchable, this first season for me gets a 5/10, while all 7 season's of both ATLA & LOK are 10/10, (imo). 💯

      I agree whole heartedly! It's one thing to make changes based upon time constraints and going from animated medium to live action. It's another thing entirely to make changes that fly in the face of established and well known characters, their motivations, and the subtle yet powerful themes. The only change that I really really liked was that Zuko's crew ended up being the regiment that was going to end up being war fodder that Zuko stood up for. I dont recall that being the case in the animated version but I will gladly eat my words if I am wrong. It wasn't a terrible series. But I found myself asking myself each episode," why would I watch this over the animated version?" Short answer is, personally, I wouldn't.

    You can just tell it was rushed. And a lot of parts that messed with the consistency. Aang learned water bending for Kitara way before they got to the northern water tribe. It made kitara even more important to Aang’s growth. The Sokka part… leaving out the sexist part really stunts the character development that we all came to really like about Sokka. And down playing Azula’s craziness for her just wanting to prove herself was a let down.
    Adding to your point, these directors were definitely afraid to touch the sexism and other parts in the show. That’s what made the show good. The characters were able to overcome it. The burning of zuko scene was lame to have Ozai come in after… just terrible

  • @axthxrn
    @axthxrn Před 3 měsíci +1

    What i think is the weirdest thing is that even though they want to be more mature, they remove/mangle the actual mature topics the original did so well. Removing sokkas sexism being the most talked about, like why did they remove that aspect from his character when it'd actively help their more mature approach? Not even just removing sokkas sexism, but downplaying the northern tribes sexism too. Yue just being able to call off her engagement means it's not really a systematic issue, it's literally just pakku being a huge dick. And aangs grappling with the fact that he's still a kid but having to do this thing that's so beyond his years, and having to mature far sooner than he would've if he was a regular kid. In this version, it's all boiled down to aang monologing to whoever will listen about how sad he is about being the avatar and how much he wants to goof without showing any of the actual goofing. It was such a letdown for all of the characters and actors involved

    So tbh I think the show is okay but it is still a huge miss to me. I feel like they changed so much so the show can appeal to the newer generation (especially the fans who joined the show when it was on Netflix.) It’s kinda the same thing they did with the Wednesday show.
    My grievances with this show is how much they took from EVERY character on the show. They tried to replace the KEY ELEMENTS of the character to improve them but it didn’t work. They wanted a mature show (which must be everything looking dark and gloomy, characters are too serious, more violence (because that’s what makes the show darker right?), and too much focus on the fire nation’s plans to take over the world.) but nothing about the show actually feels that much mature. It feels like a modern day teen show, not one that’s supposed to showcase things that are a hard pill to swallow.
    In my opinion, they spent too much money on a show that could’ve probably have been much better without those millions they spent. I mean some of the cgi looks bad and the acting…..yea, but it just doesn’t feel right. I did like some changes they made to the show, but most of the changes are pointless because they shouldn’t have been made.
