The best part of Alanis Morissette is that this is the song that almost everyone hears first (Especially if you first heard her back in '95), and it cements her in everyone's mind as this angsty, hardcore, stone cold Alt Rock singer, then 95% of her songs are her melodiously reciting poems about the vulnerability of spirituality or some borderline hippie stuff. No slight to her, her music is great. Can't think of a bigger musical influence for me in the 90's. But the image she got with this song is hilarious when, even on the rest of this album, you can just listen to, "Mary Jane" "Perfect" or "Hand In My Pocket and see that she is WAY more chill then this song would make you think.
Yeah, I feel sort of bad for her. It's a great song but 98% of her is about introspection, inner peace, etc but this is the song people are clamoring the most for and the first thing many associate her with. 🎵 Life has a funny way of helping you out, 🎵 indeed.
JAMEL! Your face! These are some SERIOUS teenage (under age) revenge lyrics. Lots of young folk face this sort of ANGST but can‘t find the words Alanis used to explain having our hearts SPILLED out by unworthy jerks! This was one of my many divorce anthems.
Oh and rumor mill says Uncle Joey from Full House. She said, well nodded once while saying no in an old interview. She always says now, they know who they are. So dunno 💯 on that.
YES! There was nothing like the power I felt, as a fifteen year old girl, in the backseat of a tiny hatchback, screaming out the chorus to this song with four other women crammed into the car! All of us together, leaning into the YOU YOU YOU on the chorus. I felt like a star. I'm 40 and I've never forgotten it. Same album, listen to What I really Want, Perfect, and Not the Doctor, please, you won't regret it J!
You must listen to the entire album. Every song is a hit. It was shocking, the intensity of the feminine anger revealed and released. It was also super empowering and not just for women; a 'surprisingly' large amount of men could tap into it as well. Really, really worth your time to hear it all.
The rumors are probably true. Dave Coulier dated Alanis back in 1992 when she was 17. And they broke up around the time she wrote Jagged Little Pill. Dave said he asked Alanis if he was the guy in the song and she said "Well you know, it could be a bunch of people." So who knows if the entire song is about him, but definitely some of it is.
@@cathychrosniak3742 there is no way the song was written because of ryan since she wrote the song in the 90s it was on her jagged little pill album in 1995 she did not meet ryan until 2002 and was not engaged to him until 2004
I just saw her show here in Phoenix last week. Incredible performance. Anything off "Jagged Little Pill" is worth a reaction. That album changed the music scene in 1995. Her song "Ablaze" from her newest album is also really exceptional.
This is what RAW is. The breakup was devastating to her, & the lyrics point to how he knew it would be devastating for her, but he left her anyway without a backwards glance to her welfare, so she's letting him know. She tells him 'Here's what happened afterwards; YOU OUGHT TO KNOW." How a relationship ends can really screw a person up more than the mere fact that it's ending or has ended. Most people understand, they can see the relationship has run its course. It's the responsibility for the 1st one to recognize the end has come to help the other person see & accept. Too often the 1st to realize it just dumps the person; sometimes they ramp the other up, so the one leaving gets some sick ego boost that the other is so enamored by them. Alanis was not let down; she was dropped. When you break like that, your filters fail. All your personal private 'business' is made public. So she lets drop all this sexual stuff to make him uncomfortable, to embarrass him. She was hurt, so she tries to hurt him. What makes this a great song is its unrelenting honesty. It's an absolutely honest expression. Gotta respect that.
I was a teenager when this came out, good memories listening to this in the car with my equally angsty cousin and her friend. This was our anthem!! I still love how this song scares the tits off guys, lol.. 🤣 Love you, Alanis - scream it for the rest of us, you're such a f**kin badass!! 🤘😎🇨🇦
My favorite Alan Rickman movie also has Alanis playing God. She never says a word because she didn't want to kill anyone until she does. You would be in shock over how many big names got their start with that movie. I love that woman and that movie.
The BEST breakup song of all time! Alanis is almost as angry here as I was when it was released, and I was breaking up with my wife... I played this whole lp so much (it's mostly an angry album...) my neighbors complained; so I turned it up!
A few years ago my teenage daughter started a collection of break-up songs (I don't know why...she just likes break-up songs; she hadn't even had a boyfriend yet at that point). I sent her this song, the entire album of "Rumours", and Paula Cole's "Stones". Now THAT is another powerful break-up song!
@@Julieroo28 best you get is Dave coulier saying it’s probably about him, and her saying she’s amused she writes a song calling a person an asshole, and people claiming “hey that’s probably me.”
This is one of her edgier songs, a lot of her songs are happier / thought full. Highly recommend "Uninvited" it is very unusual, "Thank You" and "Ironic" were big hits.
This album, and specifically this song, gave women a voice they'd been denied for so long... Pure, raw ANGER. It grabbed the industry by the throat and rattled some chains. That's for sure. And it is/was POWER!! The 90s saw a lot of women take control back of and for themselves. It was a transformative era. And as far as I'm concerned, about time. Gave rise to artists like Amy Lee, Lzzy Hale, Lauren Hill, Missy Elliott, Shania Twain, Brittany Spears, Beyonce (Destiny's Child) and a lot of others. She didn't just open the door, she announced her arrival like "Scarface"..."Say hallo to my little friend" and blasted the door to dust.
She’s talking about “Joey Gladstone” (actor/ comedian Dave Coulier) from “Full House”. This album “Jagged Little Pill” has sold over 30 million copies and is one of the biggest selling albums of all time
She's not. Dave was the only one that said that. The closest she ever came to answering the question was "he knows who he is, and he hasn't said a word.."
You should watch the video of her doing this on the Grammys. She's in a long elegant black dress, sitting for the whole performance, and she keeps it at a much lower volume. But the seething rage in the song is even scarier when she sings it more quietly. It's amazing.
I'm a boomer so this was shocking. But you know she expressed so much of what every one of us has felt but were afraid or ashamed to admit. Alanis gave us a voice, a valid voice that made sense.
First time I heard this song, I was sitting at a bus stop after a bad break up. It brought me to tears. I saw her in Concord, CA with Tori Amos in the 90's. It was one of the most amazing shows I've ever seen. Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
2 things .... 1) blessed to be right in this era of music growing up. 2) still get those chill bumps after all these years. I use to crush so hard on her. What a dam talent. 👏
I'd suggest checking out two of her other hits -- first, "Thank U", which is 180 degrees from this song, and is a beautiful message and music video to boot; then "Ironic", which is just a good upbeat tune with a fun video.
Jagged Little Pill is a fantastic album. That secret song at the end of it scared me, though. Also, I remember driving somewhere in my small little town when this came out. I was listening to the radio, and they played this without the edit. lol I remember being quite shocked.
Hi Jamel, It's Kevin. Glad you were able to experience Alanis... Great reaction as well ! Alanis is great & Definitely wore her heart on her sleeve for this song, Actually for the whole album (Jagged Little Pill) There's a few key things about the lyric's in this song. Yes it is about Uncle Joey from the tv show Full House. Alanis was 19 at the time of the break up & Dave was in his early 30's The line where Alanis is singing " I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner " Is actually true, A couple day's after the break up Alanis called Dave saying We need to talk And Dave said No I'm eating dinner.... What this song did more than anything, Was how it opened the door for not only girl's but women in general to be straight up with being screwed over in a relationship, Alanis gave them a voice that was not only heard around the world but actually made people stop & think about their actions... Alanis has a lot of great tune's Right Through You & Hand In My Pocket from the Jagged Pill album Hands Clean & Uninvited are also great tune's Cheer's From Canada
Been loving this song, and the album Jagged Little Pill by Alanis for 26 years. My favourite version of this song is where she first appeared live to the television public on the David Lettermen show in 1995. "You Oughta Know- Alanis Morisette-1995"

She probably had to write and perform this song to be able to chill on a lot of the other songs.
Yeah, I feel sort of bad for her. It's a great song but 98% of her is about introspection, inner peace, etc but this is the song people are clamoring the most for and the first thing many associate her with. 🎵 Life has a funny way of helping you out, 🎵 indeed.
She's actually said that herself, that JLP wasn't the angry album everyone thought it was.
that kinda makes it stick out all that much more, though. it's nothing like anything she did, but it's also 100% her.
JAMEL! Your face! These are some SERIOUS teenage (under age) revenge lyrics. Lots of young folk face this sort of ANGST but can‘t find the words Alanis used to explain having our hearts SPILLED out by unworthy jerks! This was one of my many divorce anthems.
This divorcée’s anthem! Any track off the album Jagged Little Pill is gold.
No kidding! I was in the middle of a very mentally stressful divorce when this came out. It was first my anthem, then it was too painful.
Absolutely love Alanis and her music!!! All of Jagged Little Pill is iconic!!! Her new stuff is great too!!! 😉❤✌🏼
It's rumored she's talking about Dave Coulier, the comedian from Full House..
Cut. It. Out. ✂️👉💁♂️
Uncle joey who knew he could provoke this kind of response
Wrong it was Ryan Reynolds they were engaged. And he changed his mind.
@@cathychrosniak3742 there is no way the song was written because of ryan since she wrote the song in the 90s it was on her jagged little pill album in 1995 she did not meet ryan until 2002 and was not engaged to him until 2004
You have no idea just how accurate this is for most broken relationships
LOVE this song. She's hurt AND angry and puts it out there so, so well.
She tells him 'Here's what happened afterwards; YOU OUGHT TO KNOW."
How a relationship ends can really screw a person up more than the mere fact that it's ending or has ended.
Very well stated!!!
Good movie
Dogma will ALWAYS be one of my favorite movies!
The BEST breakup song of all time! Alanis is almost as angry here as I was when it was released, and I was breaking up with my wife...
I played this whole lp so much (it's mostly an angry album...) my neighbors complained; so I turned it up!
And then there's Chris Isaak's album Forever Blue. Whole breakup album
She is talking about Uncle Joey off full house 🤣 literally
Allegedly, neither confirmed that as true
@@Jadguy24 I wouldn’t confirm it either!
@@Julieroo28 you're so bad, I love it.
@@Julieroo28 best you get is Dave coulier saying it’s probably about him, and her saying she’s amused she writes a song calling a person an asshole, and people claiming “hey that’s probably me.”
@@Jadguy24 lol
Lots of great songs to listen to from Alanis - my favorite is called "Everything"
Jagged little pill was a ground breaking album in the 90s.
This is one of her edgier songs, a lot of her songs are happier / thought full. Highly recommend "Uninvited" it is very unusual, "Thank You" and "Ironic" were big hits.
Your house!
I think Uninvited is my favorite song of hers.
She's incredible!! These are worth doing, "Unsent", Hands Clean", Everything", & "Crazy".
I discovered another song of hers recently that just tore me up. Its called Not As We...the official video is excellent too.
Every song on this album was pure gold. It's just one of those albums
I love the way he stares into the camera when he's shocked!
If she'll go down on you in a theater, she's a keeper.
Does the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland count? ;)
@@Mystress1980 ,
Thank you!
So many people are spreading that, and it’s an unconfirmed rumor.
You should watch the video of her doing this on the Grammys. She's in a long elegant black dress, sitting for the whole performance, and she keeps it at a much lower volume. But the seething rage in the song is even scarier when she sings it more quietly. It's amazing.
omg I just watched the vid for that and your right ..Amazing and scary
Yes I remember watching that live and you're right!
RECORD FACTS: The live Grammy version came out as the b-side of "You Learn". Yes, they were still pressing 45s in the mid-90s.
Yes!!!
That's my favorite version...
I was just a teen when this came out, she still speaks to my heart ❤️
I'm a boomer so this was shocking. But you know she expressed so much of what every one of us has felt but were afraid or ashamed to admit. Alanis gave us a voice, a valid voice that made sense.
Glad to see you got around to Alanis. She had some powerful songs
Flea from RHCP on bass. Dave Navarro from Jane’s Addiction on guitar.
I think that the drummer on foo fighters is on this as well.
@@jeffalbillar7625 yep, Taylor Hawkins
Along with the Foo Fighters Taylor Hawkins on drums.
@@jeffalbillar7625 No, he is not on the recording. He was her drummer for the tour, though. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagged_Little_Pill#Personnel
Yeah, I can't believe it took me only 20 years to find that out lol. Also, Taylor Hawkins on the drums as well.
I actually just saw her in concert here in Michigan. One of the best shows I've ever been too.
Alanis came out with things people weren’t/(actually were) ready. Great!
Great memories of this album during the 90s. The days when I was young and carefree. Hand In My Pocket was always a fave. ❤️
Entire album is great... And I'm a metal head
Metal head here …I agree she brought it with this album!! 😎🤘🏼
Metal head here. I agree.
Another metalhead.. and this album is a masterpiece
Man. You ain't even done the best Alanis. "You're House", Thank you, UNINVITED!!!
Love Alanis! She was a Canadian pop star before she started taking control of her career Amazing artist to this day!The lady rocks still.
First time I heard this song, I was sitting at a bus stop after a bad break up. It brought me to tears.
I saw her in Concord, CA with Tori Amos in the 90's. It was one of the most amazing shows I've ever seen.
Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
She has a bunch of great songs, I love 'Everything', and 'Uninvited'
Thank You blows me away!!
Your House!!!!
That is one POWERFUL song! Alanis is truly special! And sometimes you need to not analyze and simply enjoy.....:)
YES, YES YES
I really love “Uninvited” as well!
Jagged Little Pill is a fantastic album. That secret song at the end of it scared me, though.
Also, I remember driving somewhere in my small little town when this came out. I was listening to the radio, and they played this without the edit. lol I remember being quite shocked.
Are you sure? The radio edit only silenced the "ck" which leaves very little to the imagination. Either way. But yes the entire album is great.
Your House! Yes! The hidden track! The stalker song!!!
@@thetimk4720 Oh, I'm sure, man. They usually had the edited version. That night was the full word. I almost wrecked my truck. I was stunned. lol
At the time in Toronto, Q107 never played the clean version of songs. They finally did a couple of years ago.
@@coyote4237 🤣😂🤣
Alanis “Uninvited “ haunting….and “Thank You “ uplifting
She's been my favorite since day 1. I adore her. Joining you is her best song.
Cause the joke that you made, in the bed, that was me, and I'm not gonna fade as soon as you close your eyes.
Noooo.
She was pissed!
Hi Jamel, It's Kevin.
Glad you were able to experience Alanis...
Great reaction as well !
Alanis is great & Definitely wore her heart on her sleeve for this song,
Actually for the whole album (Jagged Little Pill)
There's a few key things about the lyric's in this song.
Yes it is about Uncle Joey from the tv show Full House.
Alanis was 19 at the time of the break up & Dave was in his early 30's
The line where Alanis is singing " I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner "
Is actually true, A couple day's after the break up Alanis called Dave saying We need to talk
And Dave said No I'm eating dinner....
What this song did more than anything, Was how it opened the door for not only girl's but women in general to be straight up with being screwed over in a relationship, Alanis gave them a voice that was not only heard around the world but actually made people stop & think about their actions...
Alanis has a lot of great tune's
Right Through You & Hand In My Pocket from the Jagged Pill album
Hands Clean & Uninvited are also great tune's
Cheer's From Canada
Best line in the song " Does she know that you'd hold me until you died ..UNTIL YOU DIED. ..Well you're still alive!!!
It's so nice to see Alanis' musical genius getting some exposure.
Uncle Joey from " Full House".
He left her for her best friend.
Been loving this song, and the album Jagged Little Pill by Alanis for 26 years. My favourite version of this song is where she first appeared live to the television public on the David Lettermen show in 1995. "You Oughta Know- Alanis Morisette-1995"
Great track, the musicians that played on this track is like a who's who of rock and roll, Dave Navarro - guitar (Janes Addiction etc.), Flea - bass (RHCP), Benmont Tench - organ (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) to name few. Great album start to finish.
This video also has Taylor Hawkins from the foo fighters on drums
