    Dragon Quest XII’s delays make unfortunate sense due to the passings of Koichi Sugiyama and Akira Toriyama, two people that have been involved with the franchise since the very beginning.

      @@AwsmNix Unfortunately, I predict the announcement all Dragon Quest games planned for the future will be canceled and the Dragon Quest franchise dissolved unless miracle happens, meaning The Dark Prince is the very last Dragon Quest ever created. @@cj_skywalker Both Akira Toriyama and Koichi Sugiyama have successors/protoges. Toriyama has both Toyotaro and Dragon Garrow Lee or an internal SE artist, I believe Dragon Garrow Lee is probably more likely as he is much more consistant with Toriyama's style while Toyotaro is much faster. Sugiyama has one too; I thinks was the one from Tactics Ogre though I could be wrong. I wouldn't be suprised if there was internal talk about Hori's Successor too. The Delay is most likely from being forced to switch up the game play and technical issues.

      I feel that. During the announcement, when they said they changed the combat, I died inside a little. There are so few games left that use classic turn based combat and most of them are the trash-tier RPGmaker drivel that is less about being a game and more about how many anime titties they can cram into it. I really hope they changed their mind about butchering DQ's battle system but I'm not holding my breath. My faith in Squeenix is at an all time low.

    Something people need to realize. Square Enix only has as much influence over Dragon Quest as Yuji Horii gives them. Horii’s company Armor Project are the ones who hold the Dragon Quest IP. The license it to Square for publishing but Horii is the lead and the one in control of the IP. Nothing happens with the series without Horii’s say.

    • @pablocasas5906
      @pablocasas5906 Před měsícem

      I'm wondering what would be Yuji's plataform of choice for Dragon Quest, unlike Final Fantasy, the Dragon Quest series has never tried to push the visual envelope to the max. Dragon Quest games tend to release on the most popular console in Japan, that why DQVII released on the PSOne, VIII on the PS2, IX on the DS and why Enix decided to make a version of DQXI for the 3DS. But it's been said that Dragon Quest XII will push the series into the mainstream in the West, at least that what initial reports said, DQXII will run on Unreal 5, so I guess Armor Project is targeting current-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series, but the Switch has become the most succesful console of all time in Japan with over 32 million units sold, and we haven't heard anything clear about when Nintendo is going to release their new console. I don't know if internally, Armor Project is considering making a DQXII version for the Switch, just like how they made DQXI for the 3DS, or if they're waiting for Nintendo to reveal their new console, since a port of Dragon Quest XI was confirmed to be in development for the Switch before the console was publicly revealed.

    In Japanese the "dogoo" are "surainu" as a pun on slimes or "suraimu" from Dragon Quest. Just one character or even phoneme off, and then "inu" is the word for "dog," so slimes with dog features. The choice the English versions made is probably as good as you could get, dog + goo, though it unfortunately lacks the obvious Dragon Quest reference.

      True, but of course nothing like that is going to threaten DQ in the end of the day. Akira Toriyama had a studio he founded since the 90s (i dont remember if its since the late 80s) so he was surrounded by artists who might be able to imitate his art style at this point. Another point is that the artist of Dragon Ball Super manga, Toyotaro, chosen by Toriyama himself, could take that job if he wants.

    I've been playing Dragon Quest since the first game released as Dragon Warrior in 1989. It was my first RPG and one of my first video games in general, and I ended up with two copies due to a Nintendo Power promotion. I watched the series grow from an obscure gem that only I seemed to love, to something that finally got more of the recognition it always deserved. That said, if 40+ years of life has taught me anything, it's that popularity sometimes brings decline (I'm looking at you, Final Fantasy) and with the apparent competency crisis that seems to be hitting all industries, mostly thanks to old veterans dying off and new, lesser experienced people taking their place, I'm keeping my expectations for DQXII at a minimum. Truth be told, I'm actually more excited for the DQ3 remake than any other game right now, haha

    Dragon Quest is one of the first games I think of when I hear the words traditional rpg so it would be highly disappointing to me if they eschew the turn based format for action. However it also seems like SE is trying to keep heading in the action rpg direction if recent Final Fantasy games are any indication, so I can definitely see them taking DQ there as well.

      Just using numbers to organize lol, I know ordered lists can seem intimidating.
      1. Final Fantasy has never stuck to it's traditions, numerous spinoffs and the main entries changed things up a lot, 11 and 14 are MMOs. FF 11 is 22 years old.
      2. Turn-based games are not in danger and Square Enix hasn't forgotten about turn-based, Bravely Default was basically a spiritual successor to early FF games. Dragon Quest 11 sold well so I don't think they want to shake things up. Besides Final Fantasy, there is almost a renaissance of turn-based strategy. From Square there's all the recent HD-2D releases, Octopath Traveler, Tactics Ogre Reborn, Triangle Strategy, Live A LIve. Besides Square Enix there's Persona, Pokemon, Unicorn Overlord, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. I don't think turn-based is in danger and also I don't think Dragon Quest is in danger. They've already released spinoffs like Dragon Quest Heroes and Dragon Quest Treasures which don't have turn-based gameplay, they didn't sell very well either. I think and hope Square knows better than to change mainline Dragon Quest

    Personally, I need DQXII to be a celebration of Toriyama's decades-long work on the series. As long as there's tactics involved in the combat, ideally in turn-based form, it should be okay. If they went the FFXVI route with this, however, it would be a very hard pill for me to swallow. The most I'd be willing to accept is a FFXII/DQX-adjacent real-time system. Direct action controls, though, would be a no-no for me in the DQ mainline series.

    Speaking of the mobile game, Romancing SaGa Re:Universe is actually pretty good. They're really generous with the in game currency, you don't need to get a character multiple times to max them out, and when you get new versions of characters the old ones don't become useless since the new version can use techs from the old ones as long as they've sparked it, and you can customize them to use any version of their sprite or art that you have for that character.

    I can get behind Dragon Quest 12 getting delayed. Aside from Toriyama & Sugiyama passing away; R.I.P. to both of them by the way, I'm still worried it might go on an Final Fantasy route where the gameplay style goes on all out Action RPG/Devil May Cry alike style, with an darker tone in the story & characters and losing it's charm of the world, characters & the adventure that made the franchise so good to begin with. If this is there goal and how the series will end up, than I'm done with DQ. I'm sick of seeing this crap that Square Enix tries to shove it in because they wanted to make it " cooler " when that's not the case of what the series they made is about. Don't change it. Just leave how DQ was and evolving there hardwares as possible. That's all they have to do. The only thing I'm waiting on is when Dragon Quest 3 2D-HD Remake comes out and if they can localized Dragon Quest 10.
    On the plus side, I hope Mario & Luigi does come back. With Super Mario RPG remake being phenomenal and so will the remake/remastered of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, this gives the Mario RPG'S back into it's glorious days and if would be even better if Mario & Luigi makes an comeback. I guess we can thank the Mario + Rabbids series for given the opportunity of what makes Mario RPG'S really good.

    @ignasia7230 Před měsícem +3

    David, DQ12 was announced back in 2019. That's when it was in full swing behind the scenes. They didn't have a logo yet. Even then it was already in pre-production as far back as 2018 with a small team and Horii in basic planning, just after DQ11 released WW.
    It just took them between 2019 when they had their finalized basic premise of a new battle system concept and a more mature storyline, through 2021, when they finalized the beta version of that battle system concept and Horii finished writing the story. Since then it's been in full swing. So the reality is it's been in development for 6 years, though the first two would be very cheap by development standards, as apparently it was just the inner DQ circle.
    In a lot of ways I'm actually happy for this change. Yu Miyaki may be very loyal to DQ and Horii, and may very much care for the future of DQ, but he was one of the critical decision makers for the series for the past 20 years. That's a lot of missteps we can lay at Mr. Miyaki's feet.
    1. The false claim when Heroes was first shown at an e3, where I believe it was Yu Miyaki himself who claimed this was the game that fans were demanding and waiting for. That KILLED the DQ7 and 8 fan campaigns that quite a few of us built up. It also had the impact of turning off a lot of core fans from even considering DQ Heroes as a purchase, myself included.
    2. DQ7 and 8 did not have any real marketing. 7 did well enough to get a tweet from SE, but 8 was discussed as already in the works for the West, by Yu Miyaki himself. Then we later learn that 7 and 8's performance was the core determinant factor of 11 3DS fate heading Westward. Well that means the core producers and upper echelon "brain trust" in the DQ sphere killed the momentum of the only actual marketing for the two games 1.5 years PRIOR to DQ7's release out West. They also relied on that momentum and push from fans as their marketing. Granted they did do a few things, but very much at all in the mainstream. So since DQ8 especially suffered the most in sales, both games were classified as failures.
    3. The general attitude when talking about DQ to Western media, and to Western fans from e3 2015 onward, has been very hesitant. Even with DQ11's release, most of the producers have sounded very wary about its performance, except when in interviews with Horii himself. The only person to show any confidence and enthusiasm for DQ? Has been Horii himself. Yu I suppose after enough interviews could hold his own, but not really. That attitude stems from the internal mindset, and Yu Miyaki was apparently one of the core heads that everyone looked to for guidance on how to approach things. What's the core of success in general, but especially in the West? Bold, positive, assertive, and confident promotion of your product. Sure some might include BS, but the core is the message and the clear belief that the salesman who is part of developing the product loves the product and believes it has value. No one outside of Horii has showcased this. Maybe the head of TOSE, but he's usually too busy to interview, and has only shown his face once to Western audiences, back in the anniversary special on DQ Day 2021.
    DQ has been promoted like a chicken with its head cut off. The game development decisions have also been absolutely abhorrent of late. Monsters is an exception, sort of, but Treasures needed more resources thrown at it and some more polish. So I hope they consider it a success story. Nothing indicates they do, especially with the PC sales numbers being so abysmally low. Their intended marketing path for it was within the DQ official twitter and facebook. How many actual fans, let alone strangers or sideliners even pay attention to those social media posts? I'd say less than 5%.
    It's not like I don't appreciate the efforts from the DQ promotion team in the US. They do a fine job and really put their hearts into it. They definitely care about the brand, but it needs some new direction for marketing, and decision making.
    Infinity Strash? How much did that cost them? That was an absolutely abysmal failure.
    The lack of DQX Offline out West, and the wishy washy treatment of it.
    The lack of communication for the Steam game breaking bugs in DQ Builders 2 that led to a halting of sales and a refund of somewhere around 30% of all purchases. That game hit like 500k almost overnight. Then ground to a halt with the save bug in the demo and start of the game. They said nothing for a year, and silently release a patch.
    Then you have the handling of DQ Builders 1 on Mobile AND Steam. Poorly done. No controller support on Mobile, and Steam did not restore it. It plays better with a mouse, however Steam itself is allowed to use controller API's with the game, though there's no internal native support. Why? That was already present and would have cost nothing to implement fully. That was one of the biggest complaints even in Japan for the mobile. So why create the same problem on Steam?
    I do hope they had reasonable expectations for sales for DQB on Steam with how they handled it. The proximity, the lack of marketing, etc. Plus the time gap with 1 and 2.
    These types of decisions, and many many others that are head scratching or downright stupid, are directly at the feet of Horii's DQ team, who has been given more and more control over the years since he announced retirement with DQ9. Postponed it to 11, now who knows. Horii is having the time of his life living out his success, and bless him for that. He deserves it. However they need someone who can shake things up a bit, take different viewpoints, see to consistent pathways forward for DQ in the West, and nail the inconsistent behaviours that are crippling potential growth.
    So I see this as a positive.
    Nevermind other things he's said that just downright piss me off. The US campaign for DQ's 7 and 8 was well over 10x the size of the French. I was the one who personally gathered all the emails, twitter accounts, addresses for physical letters, etc. I was the one who pushed every campaign, US and French (since that's basically all there were...), and pushed for letter and email bombing. Yet according to him, they only received a handful of French letters. We sent thousands. It's insulting that either they misplaced or deleted them or tossed them out, or they just didn't pay attention to what came in from the US and only looked at the French campaign letters. Still thank you for those specific letters he highlighted, especially as the DQ team was so touched they changed their minds, but all the asinine choices since have been beyond obtuse, and have done more harm than good, despite what are almost certainly good intentions.

    This is getting my attention.
    For starters regarding Dragon Quest 12, I had no idea things were getting that bad. Jeezus. I worry about the HD-2D version of 3. This worries me. Dragon Quest as a franchise deserves better, especially worldwide. I still want Dragon Quest X dammit.
    Btw, I'm not interested in Dragon's Dogma 2 because CAPCOM sent me a code. I'm still working on Ace Attorney btw so it'll be a while before I play it. I only wished I won the giveaway for Grandia. I plan to get the game eventually. I always do because I feel that as a creator, I am not good enough for anyone.
    Another good one. Keep it up.

    Dragon Quest 11 was one of the first times a franchise outside of Pokémon or Zelda looked good enough for me to give it a try and it became my favorite game of all time beating out ocarina of time which I thought would never happen. I was so excited about dragon quest 12 but they seem to be trying so hard to change the series with the next entry that I am just disappointed at this point.

    If they do dragon quest 12 combat in a similar fashion to the grandia style how would people feel about that? Keeping the turn based system but with the ability to interrupt enemies moving around the field on their turn? I think it would be good, grandias battle system was always great in my eyes, or are people adamant that it should just stay as it is to date?

    I haven't played any of the Neptunia games, but the franchise sounds like an Al Pachino movie: it starts out okay, but eventually devolves into an over-the-top parody of itself. I guess that's not necessarily a bad thing, because if franchises just did the same thing over and over again, we wouldn't even have the Mario Kart that likely inspired this.

    I just don't see Dragon Quest 'staying the same', with Akira Toriyama gone. Sugiyama was enough of a blow with the 'sound' of the series gone, Toriyama was the 'look' of the entire series, and now he's gone too. T_T
    The only real silver lining is that 12's angle of putting a new face on the series was already heading in the appropriate direction for the passing of the creative torch...

    • @pablocasas5906
      @pablocasas5906 Před měsícem

      Toriyama's death is going to have a huge impact on the development of future DQ titles, don't know if some of his assistants were also involved in the game's character design, but I guess Armor Project did anticipate what would happen if Toriyama couldn't work anymore on the series
      Suigiyama, on the other hand, is more complicated. It's been said that he personally chose a successor, but many people, especially in the West, has many issues with Sugiyama for his political views and the fact that he only allowed his music to be played in MIDI files on the base games, the orchestral version were only available on the soundtrack versions and some re-releases of DQ games. The music original release of DQ XI was widely criticized. I wonder Enix will insist that DQXII will feature a fully orchestral soundtrack

      It’s more likely simply over delays. They lost Sugiyama, now they’ve lost Toriyama, not to mention the game has been in development through COVID and by Horii’s own statement has been having devs working remotely which has been an adjustment to get used to. The reality is they likely expected the game to be out but due to everything happening it’s taking longer to complete.

    If dragon quest goes "action" I'll drop it like I did Final Fantasy after 10. I don't give a damn about their PR guys trying to make excuses like "Turn based is old fashioned" just to work on vanity projects instead of respecting turn based fans and carrying on past traditions....There are many, MANY JRPG fans who love these games because they are NOT dime a dozen action titles. And thanks to Squares propaganda after just about replacing EVERYONE in the mid 2000s before FF13, many think that its acceptable to swap a series genre and still call it mainline IF its an RPG.
    Imagine the fan outrage if they pulled that crap with any other genre or series. When in truth it disrespects the fans that made it a household brand of RPGs, and it disrespects its past creators vision.
    And the fact that Octopath traveler, Persona, Like a Dragon, and other turn based recent games still have a buzz around them while FF rebirth and remake were forgotten within a year, shows that my sentiment is held by many others as well.

    It's funny cuz the company developers of Stellar Blade is one of the kings of gacha and micro transactions.
    Personally I don't have any problems with micro transactions in principles (depnds on how it's handled), but I gotta respect them for doing this. When making a gacha game, it's okay to have micro transactions since the audience should had already accepted that there will be micro transactions, since it part of the DNA of the genre; but when making a more traditional "premium" game, it is far less expected and acceptable to have micro transactions so the devs opt to not have any.
    Regardless, they make billions of dollars off their Nikke gacha game so need to squeeze for money and enraging some players.
