I first came to Honolulu in 1984 in the Army at age 19...pretty cool when this was being filmed I was up at Schofield Barracks that day working in my motor pool I bet.....Loved Honolulu back then more simple.....I am moving back in winter of 2024 to retire at age 60....40 years after my first arrival....all the people here that are 50 and above are dead in this video, just as I will be in 40 years, but happy to be dying in Hawaii...when I watch this I am reminded to be present every day...especially living in Hawaii....my only regret that in 1984 I did not appreciate that special time in Honolulu when this was filmed, but I will not make the same mistake twice....
So beautiful where have all the good old days gone and the good ol people of Hawaii and the way the land used to be? It's only a memory a beautiful memory captured in videos such as this. Beautiful times long gone. I'm so glad I was able to find this video
What an absolute gem. I hope there are more programs coming out like this. Love it!
Mahalo for this! Timestamp: 11:30 for a Tour of Kalihi-Palama.
Wow… thanks for the trip down memory lane. I remember every building and especially the mechanical horse fronting that store and the #1 bus and terminal at Umi st. The shopping center where Kalihi bowl was . Kalihi is and always will be a special place for me 🤙🏾 Aloha
I remember Kam Housing very well. It no longer looks like that but I remember walking through that neighborhood where the sidewalks was all kine buss up! Lol Miss the old Kalihi days. I grew up in Kalihi Valley Homes better known as Kam IV housing. Miss the old days
I lived next to Kalihi Stream on Dillingham Blvd up till 1939, then moved to Kalihi Kai next to Puuhale Road until 1953. Both homes were next to the railroad.tracks. I left Hawaii in 1953. I remember the opening of Kam Housing across Farrington High, which was also new, around 1940. I remember pig farms at Kam IV Road as well as down by the crematory on Puuhale Road. People from Okinawa were usually pig farmers. Later, pig farms moved to the base of Koko Head where Hawaii Kai now stands.
Great segment on Kalihi. It's a trip to see how much has changed since then.
Brah, Hall Saimin, Sue store, violets coffee shop and eh, Q’s-drive-in. Tamashiro’s, Old Vienna Bakery. Oh remember Suyat Store after that they had that POW always has a nice day place. I forget the name. It was right there on N. King/Hikina Lane
I remember that store with the horse. I used to ride it all the time when we walking to and from FARRINGTON HIGH SCHOOL POOL.
