Ingredients 1 pound macaroni 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 2 carrots, shredded 1/4 cup onion, shredded (optional) 2 1/2 cups Mayonnaise Best Foods or Hellman's mayonnaise (no substitutes!) 1/4 cup milk 2 teaspoon sugar kosher salt and pepper, to taste

A few things I’ve done. I don’t add any salt because Mayo contains quite a bit of salt that way everybody I’m feeding can add as little or as much additional salt as they want when they eat it. When I make it to eat at home I add the minced onions. When it is for a party I leave them out because not everybody likes onions and as a replacement I provide a small bowl of chopped green onions that people can add a spoonful of if they would like onions.
No wonder everyone always loves my macaroni salad.I've never been to Hawaii (always wanted to),but that is how I've always made it.Sometimes I add tuna per my husbands request, but whenever we go to summer parties people ask me to make it and my cucumber salad. No clue how I got the recipe.I basically taught myself to cook.I married very young at 19 in 1979.I didn't know how to cook at all and didn't want to cook out of boxes.I became a mother within a year & wanted to feed my family healthy. So bought cookbooks & practiced.I made a few meals that went straight to the garbage since the dogs wouldn't even touch it.lol We ate PB& J instead.,by 5yrs later I was a decent cook.By 10 years I was a great cook. But my summer salads I just went by what tasted best each time I made them until I perfected them. I was born and raised in NJ,but lived down south for 15yrs so I had some Southern cooking influence that helped also. But my macaroni salad was all my invention of just trial and error from many opinions. Maybe I have some Hawaiian taste buds in me??!!! Lol Actually I'm an Italian/jew!But I love all kinds of cooking!!! But one thing I never add to cold dishes is onions! Never ever!!! I hate cold onions.Love cooked onions, but hate raw ones.To me they ruin any food.
Only use Best Foods or Hellman’s mayo if you want the real taste- 3 Hawaiian surfer buddies tell me it’s Best Foods (Hellman’s is the same, different name only) is the ONLY choice for mac salad- Some like the Japanese mayo in the tube - but I stay with Beat Foods- it’s the real deal for this.
@@moonglow8889 kewpie has sugar in it but you need to temper it with regular mayo. Instead of adding sugar, I mix 1 part Miracle Whip with 2 parts mayo or to how sweet you want it.
I love Ono's Hawaiian BBQ mac salad. They put albacore tuna in it. But none of these recipes put the same ingredients in theirs. I would like to make the Ono variety, can someone share it?? Pretty please????
Lupe, I love Ono's too! I don't think Ono's has onions nor celery in it, but I could be wrong, I think it's just the dressing (mayo, milk, salt, pepper, vinegar, and sugar) carrots and tuna if I'm not mistaken! I've also watched so many videos and only came across one that added tuna, but he also added peas and egg which threw me off a bit, not saying it's bad, I just want to duplicate the Ono's Hawaiian Mac salad! Yum😋 I'm def gna try making a small batch soon! Hopefully it comes out like Ono's LOL 😆🤞
@@MrRockfish01 great someone reminded me; i need to add the acv, milk, sugar and the mayo i like which is Best Foods Real Mayo , then i will post the result. Haven't eaten Hawaiian M Salad for a long time too.
@@MrRockfish01 , i was thinking of that too; never would i think of adding milk and sugar and i guess you have to refrig so it's not watery when you eat, and cold is a plus.
Can anyone help me understand why my mac salad always looks dried out after a few hours in the fridge? I add more mayo but hours later it's dried out again?!😢
a fridge is designed to be dry. the whole process of refrigeration removes moisture from the air so anything uncovered will dry out. it’s intentional because humidity can lead to mold or frost build up. this is also why some fridges have crisper drawers. so yeah, keep it covered.

This is the correct way to make true Hawaiian Mac salad. The trick is in the vinegar and milk,….. straight on.
