    Thanks for the review!
    Honestly? All translators, heck, every dialogue writer here who worked on this ABSURD WALL OF TEXT that is this game deserve... forget a medal or a trophy, they need their image immortalized in a statue at the local square. Major props both to the small team who worked this game when nigh no one in the West was asking for it and the international team, Spanish in my case, who worked on the remake's text at a time where, yes, people were asking for it, but this behemoth (or should I say... "this Freezing Wingwyrm"? Ehh, if you get it, you get it, I never said anything about me being funny) was still too large for the demand.
    Again, thanks! And apologies for just watching this now.

    I played the 3DS Remake and it's probably my favorite Dragon Quest game as of now. Watching this video has made me consider playing the Playstion version at some point for the more in-depth puzzles. To my knowledge, this deeper puzzle-oriented level was design was never attempted again which is a huge shame. I would love to play a DQ game that feels equally focused on puzzles as combat.

    Almost 4 years later but those boss fights are unforgivable. My first playthrough of the game resulted in effectively a soft-lock because I was trapped in a dungeon that, for plot reasons, I couldn't leave and, because I was a bit clueless, using a party of vocations that were sub-optimal. After getting repeatedly wrecked, I gave up and had to start from scratch several years (yes, YEARS) later. Fine game, if excessively long, but it's hard to tolerate a locked failure state like that.

    • @GCVazquez
      @GCVazquez  Před 4 lety +1

      Wait...you got locked into a dungeon? But there's no game over state in Dragon Quest, what happened when you died?

    • @argentpuck
      @argentpuck Před 4 lety +1

      It's been a few years so pardon if I've gotten a detail or two wrong, but it's some kind of water temple. You're locked into the temple for story reasons (I think it's to do with the time travel aspect?). The temple was hard but doable 'til I hit the last boss and he wiped the floor with me. Kicked back to the last save point which is inside the dungeon.
      I could have escaped my relentlessly grinding until I was strong enough, but that was not appealing. It's strictly my fault for doing story missions while vocation grinding.

    For me seeing screenshots during it's development of Dragon Quest 7 was what made me interested in Dragon Quest. Sadly with it taking so long to come out in the west I skipped this one as I transitioned to PC RPGs such as Baulder's Gate. It wasn't until Dragon Quest IX came out that I actually started playing the franchise. When the 3DS version came out I bought it right away and though the graphics were now a bit different I love the game and all Dragon Quest games.
    Side note, technically my first Dragon Quest game was the Rocket Slime game on DS. Truly that game is addictive.

It really feels like you're going on an adventure, and the class system is one of the best I've seen in a videogame. I think that this is one of the most underrated games in the series and that it is the PS1's best RPG.

    • @megamike15

      The 3DS remake wasn't out until 3 months after I made the video, so I couldn't talk about it then, but I did play a little bit of the remake! I was disappointed that they cut out so much of that early start and that the puzzles were simplified in the remake. I understand that first bit since they no longer needed to appease players disappointed by VI's level design, but toning down more for a new audience felt unnecessary and even counter-productive.

I was browsing CZcams for videos about Dragon Quest (a series that I never had heard before) and I found your videos very informative. I like your sense of humor: it’s nerdy, but you don’t push it and become annoying and unbearable (some CZcamsrs with a lot more subscribers and views than you do this). I also think all your video scripts were well written - I particularly liked the one for DQ VI. I feel that CZcams needs more content creators that focus on old-school RPGs/Games and I think that you have the necessary qualities to be as good as other CZcamsrs such as, for example, ProJared (my favorite in this kind of topic). You earned a new subscriber. Cheers and GL HF. PS: Don't forget to persistently advertise your channel on forums, etc.

And it's to expected, I suppose, comparing the power of the 3DS with the PS2, in a way, but it does make one wish they could just do an HD remaster of it or something on current-gen consoles with the extra stuff added in.

    It's funny I agree with you on all the games but this and 6. I found this game to be such a chore. The first few hours were boring to me, having played it on the 3ds where the beginning is somewhat devoid of meaningful gameplay. Also, this game is so long but doesn't really have much depth imo. Each island felt like a retelling of a previous story but less interesting, and it took too long to get to complex combat that made the first 20 hours almost autopilot, especially with the lack of a singular big open world to explore. The characters kind of annoyed me too, and it seems like the animations an dialogue boxes take longer to go through. Returning to the islands 2 or 3 times was frustrating as well, with not enough done compared to other games to make it feel like a brand new world. Once you get to the jobs it begins to open up a bit. This was also one of the only games I disliked overworld monsters in, as the halls tended to be so narrow in the dungeons that they were basically had the same effect as random encounters. All of this together felt like a bunch of disjointed experiences. When I compare this to DQ8 or 11, I think of this as a game that waste time and those two as games that fill up that time with things to do.
    Keifer was such a disappointment to me and I'm sad he was the focused of DQ7 Tome in DQ11.
    I actually made a post about this game a year ago here, which is when my Dragon Quest marathon almost ended for good because of this game. Thankfully after taking a looong midgame and post game break, DQ8 pulled me back in and the rest of the series just kept getting more impressive. The 180 hours I took to finish DQ11 and post game felt like a fraction of the 110 hours I took to finish this one.

    Originally the last to be called 'Dragon "Warrior"' with a lot of name changes for spells, abilities, items weapons, and monsters were renamed in Dragon Quest series (Dragon Quest VIII was the first to be called the rightful title "Dragon Quest") which at that time I had to relearn everything and what which they do (some parts were very useful for the change).
    Both versions of Dragon Quest VII are flawed with different pros and cons.
    In fact they could've had some fights much faster or even have Gabo's wolf which I might've just call it Ruff to be use for speed sprinting through areas.
    Thus Square Enix didn't even have a many good ideas to set up Dragon Quest VII right on 3DS with not a lot of time nor probably budget since it's a huge JRPG game looking a bit sluggish which they confirmed.
    Thus a flawed masterpiece still has a charm of humor then Dragon Quest VI.
    Changing the original Dragon Quest VII from rated T to rated E10 was actually the biggest mistake ever. Why?, because some parts of humor were changed and doesn't flow well with mystery which is main thing what the game is trying to do. It's like opening a present to find what's inside though instead it's always a dramatic adventure that keeps you on your toes to figure of what the problem is going on in each parts of continents.
    Plus the getting rid of puzzle dungeon at the start doesn't change anything but the mystery of tomb raidering of the ruin that main character and Prince Kiefer is trying to do every time by solving every nook and cranny just to find treasure.
    Not going to spoil after that since it's one a huge game and two it is my personal favorite though unfortunately I give it tie with Dragon Quest V because that game made me cry with joy at start through very end.

      @GCVazquez  Před 5 lety

      I think Dragon Quest's presentation is what gives it that simple look. The character designs aren't too over the top most of the time and environments are meant to resemble medieval towns and villages, so there isn't a lot of high fantasy elements to spend tons of money on.

    It took me 80-90 hours to beat this game and i grinded a lot and didn't rush. Was kinda disappointed, I was expecting 100 hours T_T.
    Anyway I'm surprised you liked this game I was expecting you to hate on it after watching that DQ VI review (yeah the game has tons of problems but I still love the game ok?!?!). Anyway, I really enjoyed the world building aspect of this game. I actually felt like I was creating a world every time I went to the present after just saving an island and exploring the new one I just brought back. There was just so many different characters that felt MORE than just being NPCs you need to help out. The game can be pretty dark and depressing sometimes though when you learn and experience why each island was sealed away. Like the first island where the girl who used to protect the village was really monster the whole time and you're forced to kill her :( Or the island with the town where everyone is turned to stone and they can't turn back to normal ever again because they were outside too long. Or island where literally new born babies are kidnapped and are turned into monsters to attack there own homes... And this is only three I mentioned. There's a lot more! Still the game did have a lot of happy endings :D. My problem is that the game can get kind of repetitive after a certain point. Eventually it just comes down to you reviving and island then going to the present, going to the island you just revived, going to the village or dungeon of the island and finding the next shard to complete the pedestal to the next island in the past. And repeating that for HOURS of the game. Still I liked the exploration aspect of that too and I enjoyed visiting the island I just saved 4000+ years later and seeing how it changed and the legend of what I did to save the island. Those are the things that made me appreciate this game a lot.

While it definitely got a tiny bit repetitive in terms of, "go to the past, do the dungeon, come back to the present, rinse and repeat" I found VII just had a much better story to tell about coming of age and growing up and stuff. It's pretty high on the list for favorite Dragon Quests.

With VII the issue was I recorded on a PS2 using a knock off HDMI conversion box so that it would display on my television. This was before finding out that all PS3s are backwards compatible with PS1 games. If I were redoing these videos now, I'd probably do it different.

    Considering how hard you ragged on DQ6 I feel you were too fair to this game. I get that you played the DS version and didn't see how much effort was sunken into everything, but the DS version is essentially an inferior version of the SNES version. The SNES essentially had the DS standards down before all the previous games got those, and it actually puts DQ7 to shame in a lot of regards, especially considering DQ7 rips many qualities and queues from DQ6. You failed to mention a -lot- of things that would absolutely kill this game for anyone looking to play this game, and the real bad part that everyone remembers about this game that they desperately tried to fix in the remakes. It takes sooooo long to unlock jobs. Longer than any other game in the series. On top of that you only have 3 party members for that period of time, and they only have a handful of skills. Once you get your jobs there's a period of time where you lose your 3rd party member and it takes something like 5 hours to get a replacement, and even longer to FINALLY get your 4th party member (at the end of the game). Also a first for anyone praising DQ7's opening. 3 hours of no encounters is not a good experience. The dungeon isn't that long, but it's also not that fun. A lot of the time spent getting into the dungeon is wasted just talking to people in town and hoping you're progressing the plot only to realize you can now talk to someone for additional dialogue after you had already talked to them and were given no clues that they had new dialogue. This was such an issue that they completely gut this from the remake. I had to whip out a guide for this because I was tired of going between the two towns and talking to everyone and wondering what I was missing. I talk to friends about this all the time and they often agree that the only DQ game worse than 7 is 2.

      whenever i hear people talking about the series. 7 is considered a more bloated version of 6. 7 is also the start of an issue i have with the series. they are way to long for no real reason. prior to 7 a dq game could be finished at around 20-30 hours. which is an average length. from 7 onward it become the norm for you to take about 80 hours to finish a dq game. i'm sorry but any jrpgs that is over 50 hours is way to long imo.
