    Thank you for such a well-done review of this magnificent game. As a DW fan, I dislike saying DQ... VII along with III were my all-time favorites. They both had such value in their game play unlike a lot of games today. The character development in VII with certain characters leaving or joining definitely hit the feels back when it was on PS1. I do miss the fact there was more character development in the original version, it seems a lot of text was edited to make it more kid friendly. Some example would be bosses cursing you out such as the red lava boss in the 2nd world or the dirty old man reading porno mags in the castle cave. Ah... so must time invested in the DW series. I will continue supporting the series without a doubt.

    I love the artstyle of these games from the PS1 era, the combination of really nice sprites, with low res textured basic polygons, giving the game a really neat and, unfortunately uniquely "32 bit" appearance. These games look like Super Nintendo on steroids, like the world's coolest cartoon. Vastly preferable, imo to the later full 3D cel shaded graphics. I think Final Fantasy Tactics, with its controllable 3D camera and map design, was the zenith of this lost art, but of course DW VII, Grandia, Wild Arms, Xenogears, and many others are great examples of this style of graphics. It would be cool if they revived it, I guess Octopath Traveler was an attempt to do so, along with some of the newer Ys Games, but its just not the same.

    I thought it was interesting that the Torneko spinoff game made it to North America, but not Dragon Warrior IV (which was said to be released in the DW VII manual booklet). This was a great game, unique soundtrack, and the story was just different. It seemed like the “Majora’s Mask” of the franchise.

      That is odd, and that Torkeko game wasn't any good either. It's kind of rare now though. That DW4 remake did make it to the DS years later so it is available to play there now. DW7 is definitely the Majora's Mask of the franchise, I like that comparison!

    Well the updated visuals look impressive I am a bit worried about how it sounds like the game might become a little too easy with some of the changes you talked about. How to find the Shards now has it simple? Um but like Dragon Quest games especially the classic ones are known to have rare and hard to find items that really do reward you well for your effort. If the important items become too easy to find then you lose that sense of how the game should make you feel for achieving your goals. Do you want to play a game that makes you feel like a cheater? You say that the Classes are going to be easier? Well I do admit that the classes had a bit of a rough patch because it seemed to have level caps for where you were in the game and if you have leveled up too much you have to move on with the story to find a new place where your battles will once again count for your class progression. I wouldn't mind a little tweaking there but I hope that it's not too much. Because in all honesty it's not so much the classes as it is the skills and spells that you learn. I mean some of the skills are over powered like Hustle can heal the whole party in battle and cost nothing to cast. If there is not enough struggle to acquire skills like that it makes it feel cheap for the little effort you put into it. I hope that they are not making it so easy that you don't feel the appreciation that comes from all the hard work that you put into it in order to have that top notch kind of power for your characters. Sounds to me like these changes could be trying to target the millennial generation that wants instant gratification for no effort.

      Those are great points. Now that I have played through the whole game I will say that it was a little too easy and maybe that took a little of the reward away. But I will still say that the 3DS version is a moderate challenge and worth playing. It was improved in other ways which make up for the challenge short comings.

No, some of the game's major issues are as you pointed out, how late the class system is unlocked. which wouldnt had been so bad, had they started you off with all your chars that youre going to use. Does me little to no good after ive done thousands of battles worth of class leveling for you to hand me another character 20hrs in and the last one 10hrs after that. Not to party members randomly leaving the team.

    am I the only one who prefers random encounters? seeing enemies on the map and having to avoid them just feel stressful to me. I like to play RPGs in a relaxed way so having to be on your guard all the time just breaks the rhythm of the game to me. and it feels like you have to just run as fast as you can once you get into a donjon, you can't really stop to think about where you should go. that kind of action based feature always break the rhythm of turn based games. just like when a slow turn based game ask you suddenly to "wake up" and press the button at the right time or mash a button.

    • @KreativeGames
      @KreativeGames  Před 7 lety +2

      Random encounters Vs. enemies on the overworld is a hot topic, and points can be made for each. It seems like developers of JRPGs are still trying to find the right way to implement overworld enemies compared to western RPGs where it feels more natural. As more games keep changing to visible encounters, I think a market will remain for random encounters, especially in the indie scene and in 16-bit style RPGs that fans still want and developers have been making more of.

      At least successful enough to sustain on ongoing release of titles and be released in North America. Dragon Quest isn't always enough to help a console, even in Japan, as I thought Dragon Quest 10 would help the Wii U over there but that wasn't the case. So it's hard to say.

      @@KreativeGames Way ahead of you dude :)
      But yeah that is a very good point that I didn't factor in; that the Wii U was a flop regardless of circumstance.
      Then again, i think that may be due to its botched marketing in that most people genuinely thought that the Wii U was just an expensive gamepad add on for the original Wii! In fact, I literally had this discussion with a family friend back in 2014 when I said that i'd recently bought one haha. But it also needs mentioning that DQX wasn't a traditional JRPG but an MMO, so that might have put people off too. And that it also came to the original Wii just a few months before the Wii U's launch.

  • @nlmarkas
    @nlmarkas Před 3 lety +1

    Man, I personally loved the game. And I'm not even really a Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior fan -- although, DW1 for the NES was technically the first RPG I tried to play... But I was like, four, man lol
    That's actually how my mom taught me how to read. She played DW1 with/for me, and The Legend of Zelda. It actually worked though, as odd as it may sound. I was the only kid in my kindergarten class who could read two-syllable words thanks to my mom being a hardcore gamer -- and she still is, at age 63 hehe
    But yeah, the class system -- it was a bit rough, especially when you had to build up your newly re-jobbed (xP) characters up from level 1 (again, and again, and again, ad nauseam -.-). But it was still really neat. I wish they'd remade it for the PSP ='(
    Also, as far as the game's graphics goes, who cares? Yes, it was bare, compared to... well, quite a few other games, even ones that came years before... Sigh. -.- But I mean, people all said the same thing about Earthbound, and even its (mostly) worthy successor, Mother 3. But those games were both instant classics. I couldn't understand why more people weren't playing it o.O With RPGs, especially some of the older ones, graphics *should* come just about last on any true RPG fan's wishlist. Hell, remember MUDs? Lmao If you're talking about a *true* RPG'er, the game should firstly be about the gameplay. And secondly, it should be about the story [or stories]. Or maybe it's story first, *then* gameplay...? I dunno. One of those xD
    Anyway, awesome review, man. Thanks ^^

    I'm not going to cover the retroreview/retrospective points, but I will say this about DQ's 5 and 6:
    DQ5 was initially slated for the US. Enix had altered course though from the NES era of improperly promoting the DQ series, and instead opted for restarting with non-DQ games to lead-in. They picked Actraiser. Anyway, midway through translating DQ5, DQ6 was nearly finished, and they decided that given trends in the US, the much prettier DQ6 would likely fair far better than DQ5. Much the same reasoning Square came to with ditching FF5 for FF6, despite having been working on FF5.
    DQ6 was a finished product, and they even announced its impending release in the Enix newsletter (it's also how we know about DQ5 initially planned for localization...that and an NP Japan Watch special around 1995). However Enix decided to close its doors around the same time, not considering the repurcussions, as they banked too heavily on Actraiser 2, then subsequent odd-ball games like Robotrek and Brainlord which were flops. Especially Actraiser 2, which they dumped soooo much money into, and its sales were horrific. Biggest complaint being they removed the simulation aspects of the first, and the floating element made it hard to pinpoint the next landing platform, making it one of the most painfully difficult platformer-action hybrids to complete, as it's just too easy to fall into oblivion.
    I'd have to find the interview with the EoA staffer at the time, with I think RPGFan, DQ6 was prepped and ready to roll out when they closed the doors. EoJ felt the losses were too great to risk their main series yet again. Despite the fantastic sales of Actraiser 1, Soul Blazer, and Illusion of Gaia.
    It's the same reason we were denied Terranigma. Though the oddball detail being Nintendo of Europe managed to convince Enix to allow continued selling of Enix games in Europe, and thus they received Terranigma. Maybe because Enix had no Euro office, and when Nintendo published in the US, EoA did all the localization work themselves, and with no EoA they didn't feel confident in working a new deal where Nintendo would handle all duties in the US? I don't know. It could also be NoE's deal was mostly with Quintet while NoA was with Enix, given Enix was just a publisher with extra rights to the games they published.
    It does suck though. Even more painful when SE hasn't remade or done any compilation rereleases of the Quintet games, or even the quirkier releases they published.

    • @ignasia7230
      @ignasia7230 Před 6 lety

      You do realize that the writer, artist, and composer aren't "asked" to come back to make a new game. Enix in the past, and Square-Enix in the present do not own Dragon Quest. The trio do as much, if not more so than SE does, and definitely owned it completely under Enix, who only owned naming rights and publishing rights for each individual release as they were developed. Meaning if Horii wanted to pack up his bags and move to a different publishing house on the next game, or a remake of an older game, even if it's copy-pasta of the original, he could without penalties or Enix having any legal say.
      Dragon Quest is unlike FF. Enix never owned it. SE doesn't own it. SE and Square before them, owned FF wholesale. Similarly with Xenogears. However Dragon Quest is split between multiple parties.
      1) Scenario and game design are copyright to Armor Project, Horii's own studio, Dragon Quest is HIS series, period. He is the creator...period.
      2) Musical Score as of DQVI SFC, is copyright to Sugiyama Kobo, Koichi Sugiyama's official licensing company. He owns all the rights to all the themes, and the DQ theme could not even be reused for a new game without his permission. It's not like he's asked back, it's his life's work.
      3) Character and monster designs are copyright to Bird Studio, Akira Toriyama's studio.
      4) Until Dragon Quest VII 3DS and Dragon Quest X, the game engine was copyright to the studio that developed said engine. However this is the game ENGINE, not how it's used, not the code in the way it's crafted for the games. That is owned by Horii under Armor Project. Since DQ10 and 7 3DS, this is owned by SE, as the trio are set to retire soon...maybe, Horii's talked about it quite a few times.
      5) Enix, and SE owned the publishing rights per game as they were released, meaning they don't automatically own the rights to the next game or any gaiden until the contract for said game is made. They also own the rights to the brand name, and again, per game release, as it's released. So again, if Horii wants to move to a new studio for a new Dragon Quest, he can, even now. He won't though, but he can.

      The original Japanese release of DQVII PSX NEVER HAD A SYMPHONIC SUITE in the game, it was released with the Midi/Synth. The only release of this game with said suite was the 3DS remake. The first time a Dragon Quest saw a release with its symphonic version instead of the midi/synth version, was DQ8's international release on the PS2.
      Since then only DQ's 7 and 8 3DS have had a symphonic suite as the musical score in the release, and even then, ONLY in Japan. ONLY.

    I'm playing the physical PS1 release on my ps3 right now. The only bumber is that it doesn't fill your full HDTV unless you stretch out the pixels to 16:9.
    Also, it's unfair that they made it easier. They should have left the puzzles exactly like they were. That's what the Internet strategy guides are for if you get lost. But basically telling you where things are is almost as bad as backseat gaming, with the exception of the game giving you the answers. Even when P4G and P5 initiated the SOS help thing if you are online is truly cheating. Also, being able to see what others did is kind of cheating too. Please note that I am using the phrase kind of cheating rather than declaring it is cheating. It's not really cheating, since it's built into the game's design, but it's also kind of cheating since the original P4 did not have the network SOS option. I made a mistake P5's network feature to see what others did is built into the game, yet it takes away the joy of figuring out what you want to do. Hence the phrase -- kind of cheating.
    This is the game that should have been put on the PS1 classic.
    Just think if the original Legend of Zelda told you where all the heart containers were, it would be unfair. My theory is that you are supposed to struggle with it first, then get help, not always asking for help immediately.

    Original Dragon Quest VII sucked crew checking in. Here are my complaints about the original. It had very little to do with graphics (which I never expected much from any Dragon Quest game), and had everything to do with the flow and especially the job system.
    The game flowed very and I mean VERY slowly, at a pace nearly as slow as the first game. If the first game was 90% leveling (which it is) then the original DQ7 was probably around 66% or so level grinding. Upgrades cost way too much, and leveling wasn't balanced at all.
    The job system in the original DQ7 was a chore. If they made the game more like DQ4 and just had everyone have their specific job classes it would have been better. Compared to Final Fantasy 5 and even 3, the job system is antiquated. If Maribel wants to be a warrior, it would make sense that she would be able to equip warrior type stuff, right? Well not by DQ7 logic. And AP growth? Don't get me started. In Final Fantasy V you can easily farm AP in the last third of the game to learn abilities quickly. Not so in DQ7. Getting AP in DQ7 is done by winning fights against enemies your own level, and you gain them one at a time. And for some of these job classes it can take up to 40(!) AP before you gain ONE job level. Tediousness at its best.
    I'm about to get Gabo/Ruff in the 3DS remake, and hopefully when I get to Dharma and get job classes they have addressed this. I heard you don't get to keep abilities, but I hope this means that getting the abilities in the first place will be much faster. If not, then we're gonna have a problem.
