Hello everyone….A heartwarming Christmas story for you.
Happy Holydays!
I got a call.
If I could arrange a Turkey for a telephone commercial.
Since I film with animals, I am also asked to help with animals on professional film sets as an animal handler.
Of course I knew some Turkeys at a petting zoo, but I had a better idea: This was my chance to go and save one from becoming Christmas dinner.
So I went to a farm where the Turkeys would be picked up only a few hours later.
They were so beautiful…and funny in the way they reacted to me.
I also felt sad and it was kind of unreal to realise that all of them wouldn’t make it until Christmas. Except for one.
I just couldn’t choose one, so I asked the farmer to pick one for me.
He chose a female because they are not as heavy as the males.
In the car she was a bit disorientated and she had no idea that the impossible just had happened to her.
She is truly one in a million.
And of course she could only have one name: Lucky
It was funny to realise that I just had done the same as the president of the United States. As you might know it is tradition that the president pardons a Turkey every year before Thanksgiving.
On the film set she did exactly what she was supposed to do.
She didn’t mind the lights and the camera and the fake snow falling on top of her.
I took her to a school to show her to the children over there.
Most of them had never seen a Turkey this close and they all loved her.
Lucky was really relaxed and loved to be petted by them.
At my home she was so sweet. She really liked to eat vegetables for the first time in her life. And she enjoyed being tickled on her head.
It was also nice to be in the snow with her.
After a couple of days it was clear that she was too lonely in my garden so I took her to a new family at the petting zoo that I know well.
The Turkeys over there gave her a warm welcome and it felt I had found the right new home for her.
And what was really cool, when the telephone company heard that the Turkey that was pardoned in their commercial, was also saved for real, they offered the petting zoo to make a donation to build a brand new Turkey Paradise for Lucky and her family.

I'm not surprised, we raise market beef cattle and we are around them all the time petting them and stuff. I'm sure turkey's are the same way, we care about our animals. Most of them are super sweet, some of them just have an attitude though lol. Just like humans.

@@patriciatetzel728 they aren't "violently" killed, the industry does it's best to make the entire process as stress free on the animals as possible. And I can say my cattle are sweet because you know what? They are. And yes I always miss them when they go to market but I know that they are going to feed a lot of people and that their by-products and going to help make products that you and I use every day. Please don't speak badly about something or someone without doing your research. We aren't bad people.

When you realize this beautiful creature who has her own personality and traits would have ended up dead and eaten, it makes you think about the sad reality of it all. I'm glad though, that she was saved and now lives on past Christmas

It’s so hard to think that these adorable little friends are killed in mass.
My favorite of our pet turkeys were three girls. They LOVEEEED tomatoes and would chirp chirp chirp when they came into season! Big weeds were snacks for them. They did a great job cleaning our yard.
The first died fighting an owl off. The last two died of old age.
Maybe some of them die for food, but not all of them. Some get lives with friends and family. ❤

@@wafflelappen4749 Well not quite equal. If you look at the suggested portions (healthy eating plate, food pyramid) meat is a about 1/4 max. The rest is mainly grains, veggies, fruit.

She is so trusting of you considering the life she has lived. And how calm she acted around all the children, amazing. Sad how that farm is considered cage free.
Why is it sad? IT IS cage free, you should see the ones in cages are so much worse than that. And on warmer days they actually get to go outside.
My best friend owns a Turkey farm and her birds are free ranged. They are allowed to move about as they please and are never forced so close together like that. I do not support that abuse of animals matter fact I want better for them.

if you noticed how those turkeys "welcomed" their new companion.... they feel safe packed (but not too close) together, and they get to ram at day/warmer times.

I'm glad the turkey chosen was female. I know from personal experience how much shorter of a life male broad breasted turkeys usually have. Both of mine had issues and died, but the females are still going strong. She'll be able to live a full and happy life with the other turkeys. Thank you for saving her from the fate that would befall all the others. Though you couldn't save them all, it makes a huge difference to Lucky that she was saved. Good job!! Albert must be proud that you're his father.

I actually cried when I saw that huge amount of turkeys that were gonna be slaughtered. Thank you for not taking one from a petting zoo and going out of your way countless times to help birds. I have been a long time viewer, but in a couple seconds, I will subscribe.

That's how I see my cockatiels, who I also happen to take to the park, and on the train, and on the bus, and we walk a garden labyrinth in one of the cemeteries in my area. I've also taken one of them to my job when I picked up my paycheck. I've taken them all out to eat (we sit outside, of course!), and to street festivales. They love being around people, and they get a lot of attention too!

I love their sweet gurgling and bubbly noises when they're happy. Turkeys are such sweet birds when they're comfortable - I hope your videos help people see these birds as more than food - they're beings themselves and just want to be content and healthy.

It's so depressing seeing them packed in like that-- bet those are the ones they call "cage free," right? I'm glad to see a sincere video like this about a turkey, for some reason our food animals are treated with maybe a tenth of the respect we'd give a pet or wild animal.

When I was 9 my dad took me to a farm to visit the animals :)
And the farmers offered to give us 2 turkey chicks for free because I loved watching them run around in the grass
so my dad ended up getting the 2, we named them Yeti and Meatbird (she was thicc)
I loved them so muchhh and everytime they were left alone in a room they would cry for a mommy figure, so I stayed with them at night- Until they got older ofc :) When winter came our neighbours complained about us having turkeys living in a little hut in our backyard in the winter smh
they described it as "torture" when we built them a wooden hut with a heat lamp outside in the snow.
The town police told us we couldnt have turkeys anymore so we had to give them away to our uncle who lived outside of town :(
