    8:57 I can explain. Essentially this is the design for the FIRST heavily used tank in war. The British "Mark 1" tank. Technically a different tank, "mother" (the only one we have today is named "little Willie" was the first ever tank made, but the mark 1 was the first actually used in wars. As you can tell, the treads are the largest part of the vehicle, which is so that it can easily traverse trenches, which were in use at the time. (WW1)

    • @BlendyStick
      @BlendyStick Před 2 lety +3

      For extra history points the long treads were really about the only part they got right. The geometry and armaments were all sort of made up on the spot because nobody had a clue how a tank worked. For extra irony points, the introduction of mechanized warfare greatly reduced the efficacy of trenches thus long tread tanks like the Mark I essentially obsoleted themselves.

    IIRC in the context of classical Greek mythology, Zeus was meant to be the _ideal_ husband and father. He may have been a serial philanderer, but that was accepted for, at least, aristocratic married men. His portrayed parenting is archaic to us, but he encouraged his children to live up to their potentials. We see him as shitty because society has moved on and cares (mostly) more about consent and autonomy. If we came up with Hellenism today you'd bet he'd resemble our society's ideal of a father and world leader.

    That’s the British Mark I tank often called “big willie”. the first fully produced tank , it is the successor of the “little willie” prototype tank which was scrapped because of it’s slow speeds little firepower and inability to cross the trenches. The mark I had two variants: “male” and “female”
    The male variation had two 6 pounder guns and three .303 hotchkiss mg’s
    The femal variation had four vickers mg’s and one .303 hotchkiss mg’s
    The mark I Has 11 other continuations

      that's a Mk. V "Male" tank, not a Mk. I. "Mother" (or unofficially called Big Willie) was only a prototype for what became the Mk. I. Mk. Is were the first produced, Mk. IV was the first widely used design. Mk. II and III were mainly training vehicles and never saw combat. Mk. IV and V are the "definitive" design, they saw the largest production numbers and saw combat on pretty much all fronts between 1917 and 1918. Mk. VI-VIII were prototypes/post-war developments and never went into production, though the VIII (also called Liberty) were among the first tanks designed for the US Army. Mk. IX, though based on the V, was a Personnel Carrier (the first APC). Mk.X was never built, it was an alternative design to the VIII.

    5:17 It's actually even better. The woman in question, Galyn Susman, was not just "an animator", she was the supervising technical director. The "home computer" was a company-owned graphics workstation (think five or six digits) that she was given so she could *work from home while caring for her newborn child.*
    She was the only one who was allowed a take-home workstation (she would not have been able to work on a PC of the time--home computers were not powerful enough). Everyone else was working in the office on shared storage. Back then, the Internet (or at least home internet connections) wasn't fast enough for her to just pull the files down over the wire so they were sending her complete physical copies every week. So she was the only person working on a separate complete copy of the movie. When someone accidentally wiped the master in the office, it was discovered that the backups had failed and they could only restore about 10% of it. Her copy was thus the only remaining complete copy.
    So yeah these days I wouldn't be surprised if everyone working on those movies has a take-home computer with a separate copy of it, or just pulls files over the internet. But back then, the storage, processing power and networking speed required to deal with 3D animation of that quality was a few big steps above what was available to home users.

      Humor is the best way to make something both accessible and easy to remember.
      When I was in college, I took an Honors history course for which the professor had written his own book because he hadn't found any that he considered adequate. I literally never opened the book, at first because I didn't need to, then as a point of pride. I set the curve on every test so high that the prof started ignoring my grade and basing the curve on the next-highest score. I think I missed maybe three test questions out of a few hundred the entire semester. At the end of the semester, he met with me and urged me to become a history major, offered himself as my advisor, and asked how I did so well on all his tests.
      I told him _The Cartoon History of the Universe, Part 1_ by Larry Gonick. Because it was both funny and interesting, I had read that book a dozen times until I had it completely memorized as a kid. The second half of it followed the professor's syllabus almost perfectly. The few things that hadn't been in _Cartoon History_ had been in the lectures, and because I had the context down perfectly, those few things slotted right into my memory.

    5:13 Yeah, that happened. In 1997, during a routine cleanup, a (wisely) unnamed employee input the code "RMRF" in the wrong directory, which deleted every single file for Toy Story 2. For various reasons, they didn't have any backups at the time. The only reason the movie still exists is because the supervising technical director at the time, Galyn Susman, had just given birth and frequently had to work from home, so she happened to have the only existing backup on her home computer. They actually referenced this in Toy Story 4, with a license plate reading "RMR F97"
