    Jan by reading some of these comments you are doing something real exotic...... Swathing small grains is real common in Canada and Northern US. Helps crop dry faster as the case is here with a crop that is uneven ripe. Also helps if you have weed crops (kind of a thing of the past with herbicides). Helps beat the weather. He can combine in few days behind a swather where this crop maybe week or 2 away from straight cut with combine. Hard to believe with all the information on the internet that so many people are surprised and unfamiliar with this operation. So we all say Thanks Jan for the education!!!!!!!!!

    The main reason for swathing is to ensure the crop fully ripens? Would you ever use Roundup and then direct cut with the combine? Here in Scotland some farmers spray their crops with Roundup to kill off any green bits and make sure everything is ripe, before direct cutting with the combine. I don't know anyone that swaths here, except for canola (OSR).

    • @davidzeinstra5053
      @davidzeinstra5053 Před 4 lety +4

      Law of averages. Average Dryland Barley is anywhere from 50-70 bushel/acre yield targets. So let’s say he loses 6 bushels at 48lb bushel weight, that’s almost 300 lbs an acre at about $235 a tonne (just over 10 cents a pound) so if his cost are less than that ($30 an acre) he breaks even anyway.
      Costs always vary, but with newer equipment like that would average about $15 an acre (equipment costs, fuel, labour etc.) , so has the potential to save/make $15+ an acre vs potential loss. But, some years it works out higher cost or lower savings. Rough numbers above mind you.

I understand the direction of plant vs swath/bale - wouldn't it be better to plant in the short direction, then you would do the swathing and baling in the long direction? I'm thinking the planting is probably most difficult, so it may be better to plant in the long dir, just thinking.....

    Loved being able to see the swather work from above. What are the combine peas used for? What is the difference between a swather and a mower?

    • @nmccw3245
      @nmccw3245 Před 2 lety

      A swather takes its swath (area that it cuts) and forms it into the narrower windrow for drying. That’s why swathers are also called windrowers.

    what kind of header goes on the combine to pick up the swath? Is is like a pick up head on a chopper? Never heard of swathing before combining.

    • @cilliangalvin8646
      @cilliangalvin8646 Před 4 lety +2

      similar to a chopper pick up, different design but same outcome. Its just alot gentler with the crop to not loose any grain.

    Lots of comments. Barley needs to swathed. You can get it done a month sooner than straight cutting.

    Good explanation on the commentary concerning the reasoning behind the swathing. Do you still lose seed while it is on the ground drying? Are you spraying the Canadian Thistle end row of the field this year? Bedankt voor de les.

    Can you mow regular grass with one of those

    • @dearthworm
      @dearthworm Před 3 lety +2

      If the grass is tall enough. The cutting blades can go down within about 2" from the ground, but it doesn't work good for cutting short grass. The plant has to be tall enough to have some height and weight so that it falls back onto the draper, else the clippings just build up on the knife/guards and then plugs up the knives and then it won't cut anything. My family (until we sold the farm) had the same machine that we used for cutting hay, which is a mixture of several grasses.
