Oh, the irony of explaining a split-screen effect with a 3D animated actor. Captain, I salute you.
What are you talking about? Ami is real v.v
I can see how you would think it's a 3D animated actor. But that was the whole trick. The SECOND Ami was just the FIRST Ami filmed TWICE.
XD
+XenMaster
he clearly didn't watch the video explaining how it works.
i have no idea what you're talking about
That last shot was so fake. There's no way it got up to 88 mph that quickly.
The new deloreans only need 20 mph to leap through time. VFX isn't the only thing that advances you know
MrFusion is obvious, but you overlook Nitrous oxide being a thing? Where the Captain goes he does need --roads-- 142km/h
I don't like how slow it was going when it disappeared but there's a fire trailer much faster.

"every corner drug store.. a little hard to come by"
A nod to Doc Brown when he mentions getting plutonium in 1955.
I love the "Easter eggs" that CD puts in these videos.
Its 2020 and plutonium is still not available at every corner drug store.
You need to know the secret handshake. They keep it under the counter.
You do know he said web store?
did you know in this video when he mentions 'Back to the Future' this is a subtle nod to the film trilogy 'Back to the Future' by Spielberg and Zemeckis
So, how did Ami high-five Captain D? We all know that Captain D is just a CG character composited into the real world.
Bruce Forte
He's not CGI. He's a robot made by Industrial Light, and the top half of his head is makeup to make him look like a human
I know this is a year old and a joke at that but the cgi avatar is composited ovee the real person.
No she's real
@@drobnoxius9483 "She"? We're talking about CD. He's the CG one. It's pretty obvious, dude.

I'm jealous of Ami. Its probably cheap for her to go to any country in the world, she just emails herself.
Jack Kraken no she physically needs to be there for motion capture

03:02, that moment when you realize just how far Captain D has come. But then you immediately remember it's Captain D and have to wonder how much of that sound stage is actually real.
Well done, Captain.
I just assumed none of it was real.
I'm thinking the car at the end was real, but it's Captain D so I still have a good bit of doubt...
At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if he revealed that every episode has always been 100% CGI and he's never even been if front of a camera. The detail is just that high in the stuff I _do_ know to be effects.
That guy who is the stand-in for the second Ami in that shot kills me every time I see him.
7:30 The little bump/bounce as the Delorean lands that starts with the model on the right and seamlessly continues with the real Delorean to the left of the lamp post is such a nice touch. It really makes it look so realistic.
It would have been much easier to have it land flat but they went to that extra effort to really sell the effect.
Brilliant stuff.
2:50 that hand over looked perfect. i actually went "wtf" for a moment.
It bugs me so much that you're so freaking talented and don't have more subscribers.
Most underappreciated CZcamsr EVER.
Lucky Llama i think the number of subscribers a creator could have has can be misleading and even incongruous with average number of views that could happen in any given week, I've seen youtubers that have 127000 subs but only get about 30000 views on most their vids, in conclusion the quantity of folk subscribed to a channel is not indicative of either quality or even success
The problem is CZcams is heavily weighted to people that shit out vlog style videos every day.
this is youtube's biggest deal, they need stupid Paul-brother's kind of fast/brainless shit to plague with ads.
Very Understandable. My stuff is plenty simple,.. make your very own visual, music and keep it simple stupid. Here is one of my silly K.I.S.S. CZcams Project czcams.com/video/V_r3tu-K9Zw/video.html
Agreed. All these crappy top ten videos that literally would've taken 5 mins to botch together are getting millions of views. YT really needs to sort out it's algorithms. Or it should have a section or reward for top quality content to get more eyes on it.
I love how Ami was standing on an apple box for that first scene.

I remember when I was kid, here in Indonesia my father and I watched this movie on TV and was amazed by the visual effect. Unfortunately, we only had the opportunity to watch the first and second sequel of the movie because we miss the third one, there was no TV on demand like Netflix that day. So we keep waiting until the TV channel broadcast them again.
Now, when we enter internet era, finally I can watch entire sequel of the movie without my father. He never get the chance to see the end of the sequel.
And he also never get the chance to see how the visual effect was made for this movie.

I love the Back to the Future trilogy so much. But watching these videos explaining the painstaking tasks the makers undertook to actually accomplish these films has made me love them even more. And it was darn entertaining too. Thank you CD.
Exactly my thoughts. Despite understanding now it's physically and logically impossible.
According to legend: Ami never made it back to England.
And we can blame Captain Picard: czcams.com/video/j0ROsZtHjjI/video.html

The amount of commitment and talent at play on this channel are waaay above youtube quality
This channel takes my breath away. It is heartwarming, humours, nostalgic, educational, satirical and more. The production values (based on the constraints) for us mere mortals are second to none!
This is how you justify buying a delorean

I love it when you talk about a certain kind of visual effects for a while, and then blow our minds with an insane version of the said VFX
I am not a CZcams producer but I am a CZcams video viewer and watch so many videos per day I lose count. As a huge Back to the Future fan, this video production (part 1 and 2) I literally got up and gave a standing ovation. I never do that. Everyone gives little credit for all the analog effects in the trilogy. They want to talk about the actors and the car and blah blah blah. The production of these two videos were nicely done and spoke heavily on the most important part of the films besides Bob Gale, Industrial Light and Magic. Absolutely Bravo here. This was very well put together. Every diehard Back to the Future fan that appreciates the production standpoint (the real fans) should appreciate this set of videos to the highest regard. Thank you.
When the amazing quality doesn't match up with the sub count...
Such nostalgia. 'Jennifer's House' 7:48 is right up the street from where my parents still live. I grew up there and saw it all happen.
cyphre You witnessed a Delorean landing on your street? Nope; I don't believe you.
JamiePohlOA He just mumbled something about crazy drunk drivers and went back to sleep.
I'm pretty sure the the beginning being a reshoot of the ending of the first episode is a reference to the beginning of BTTF part 2 being a reshoot of the ending of bttf part one. Amazing
Very very very good comment indeed. Kudos, sir!
That outro though! Wow!
Just imagine if BTTF was remade with today's VFX. It would be absolutely seamless everywhere....But it would destroy the charm of all the work that went into the originals.
Could be very similar to Ready Player One, total vfx overkill, a disaster of a movie in many departments.
The story wouldn't sell today. It'd be competing with Avengers.
Oh boy would they ruin this if they tried to remake it today. They can’t improve these movies.

2 years later and I'm still watching
This video alone, proves in my opinion that your content is light years ahead of any youtuber. Most tv shows really. I know this video took a lot of hard work and passion to create. Thank you.
3:30 You accurately CGI'd something I find maddening about movies and TV shows, which is that the actors always use empty cups. It's dead obvious the cups are empty, because the physics of an empty cup are completely different from those of a full cup (and even more so from a partially full cup).
I find the empty cup preferable to the times there’s actual water in there though. Which does happen now and then, presumably by a director who noticed it wasn’t moving right or wanted to force the actors to swallow before saying their lines. Spotting a glimpse of cold, viscous, clear liquid breaks my immersion more than having to assume the cup is halfway empty.
Even rarer is actual coffee or tea, hot and steaming, but I’ve seen it maybe half a dozen times. Usually just for the pour/serve shot, rather than for the drinking, but occasionally the actor must’ve gotten it in only a couple takes because it’s still visibly steaming while they sip. (And that makes the tiny sips believable too!)
Damn! Vfx was so much harder back in the day. Great demonstrations Btw!
Look how far we've come though, you're watching some pretty impressive effects videos made by an independent film maker on a personal computer distributed through a global digital network.
Woah, you here!
I had my first adolescent date at the cinema to watch Back to the Future. I was so consumed by the experience, I barely noticed her.
As somebody who does visual effects and even though I know how all this process was done, it's still great to watch, and love how professionally you explain it. The outside shot with the two Biff's. Must have been the toughest challenge when you consider the light changing of time of day. Matching that, though it's not 100% obviously, still works very well.
If you watch the scene very closely when both Biff's are in the car, as the camera zooms in, you can see the plates wobble ever so slightly a bit, but you have to look very closely to notice. Also the later shot when Marty says no thanks to Biff, a couple of frames, will see his hat disappear over the cut line. But again unless you're really into visual effects most people don't notice these things.
But I love the old school visual effects.
The HypeMachine was well worth it. Thank You CD for being a reminder why CZcams is an amazing place.
Its literally makes me visibly angry ever time i check his subs.
Boi you need more subs
oh crap you're right, not even 1 million.
This is his least favorite type of comment, FYI.
He's been gaining a lot, only only had 100k a few months ago
Kind of amazing that he doesn't considering how long he's been around.
Also far and away the most common.
The animation on Ami is worth a thousand Mass Effect: Andromeda
2:48 The slate is giving me a headache. My first guess was you had someone raise a real slate from below and then masked him/her out. Then Ami was animated to match the slate's position.
But then I noticed the shadow of the slate on her shirt, which means something additional had to be done... You could've done it manually, it's just some rectangular shape. But you also could've tracked a 3d model of a slate to match the position of the real slate, then turn off all the textures so that only the shadow is cast.
But then I noticed the shadow of Ami's fingers on the slate... Come on! Well, I don't think you did that manually. You did have a 3d slate in there somehow. And if you had a 3d model in there, you could actually change between the two on the fly. But I can see fingerprints and smudges on the black part of the slate even when Ami's holding it and I don't think you'd go that far with texturing. Especially since you'd have to make those smudges match the real slate you're holding (I think it's a real slate, it looks very much real in your hands and you hold it so comfortably). So the 3d model slate is probably invisible all the way through and we're only seeing the real one.
So I'm thinking you had a 3d model of a slate tracked to the position of a real slate that we see. You had to mask the slate where Ami's fingers are so that it looks like she's holding it (unless you can do that with some arcane rendering technique in your 3d software - I don't know very much about cgi at all). Then you cast Ami's shadow on the 3d model slate but you didn't render the slate, only Ami's shadow - as a transparent layer of course, otherwise it couldn't be composited on the real slate (unless you played with opacity/layer modes). And vice versa, you also rendered the shadow of the invisible slate on Ami.
Please tell me I got it right, I spent like half an hour on this.
The slate is real all the way. I don't see if it was moving on the set for the first part or is it stationary and the movement done in post later. My guess it's the second one.
So basically, the slate is static all the way in the shot, than the guy picks it. The 3d character is animated with a 3d slate so that the final part is roughly matching the position of a stationary real slate in the end of animation. Than, textures from the real slate are comped into 3d slate to make the transition seamless.
It least that's how I would have done that in the controlled independent environment. To make it work on the real production set, I would probably go with the first option - the real person on set holding the slate and interacting with the actor.
What i noticed...and i don't know nuffin except this guy is a tricky fella....light angles on him and the girl are slightly different...his more horizontal , hers slightly higher...and the camera moves after he takes the slate...and the corner of the room is the divider between them....i also noticed maybe...a slight distortion in her right hand...but that could be cgi...i dunno....he's a slippery one....but i do like his stuff!!
@@noneck8166 Captain Disillusion himself is animated
My best guess from the comments and pausing and playing certain parts is that the girl actually came to film on location or they had a stand in and then they composited the avatar over them. Pause at 2:50 and look at her left hand (our right). You can tell that it was a physical slate being held by a stand in (or Ami herself) and then the cgi was layered over it.
poppijoni bro reading your comment was like watching an episode of CD that was brilliant

back to the future is a film that pushes the point of VFX home
If the film is based around VFX... it's never going to age. In 2020, I've already watched through all three parts twice. It proves that a good story told will suspend the disbelief for the VFX that aren't perfect, and let the VFX that come out flawless fade into the backdrop where they are appreciated as a real shot.

I've tried, but I just can't find the words I need to explain how highly I think of this video and the rest of your channel.
I love it when geeks can geek out over their favorite thing. It's great that you're not a stuffy technician only concerned with technical methods, but you actually love the epic story too.
Given it's been two years, I'm sad this series (of VFX breakdowns of film) never got a second entry.
That said, Allen, I love your work. I find myself binging the entire CD series every 6months or so.
Each time I reach the end disappointed there is not more to watch, but grateful for the work that's been done. I wistfully move on, having watched every video, and forget ab CD until 6months later, a video comes up on my feed, and I find myself joyfully falling down the rabbit hole again.
You do fantastic work. The writing is creative, independent, and interesting. Each time I return to this space, I gain a little more of the detail you pack into your episodes. Most recently, I've been taken by the voice of this program. The way you, as a creator, have things you want to say. I never feel like your episodes are solely about breaking down vfx. They could be about the arrogance that drives people to want to know how something is done, or greed that makes someone want to hide how something is done, or the incredible ingenuity that goes into making effects for both amateurs and professionals alike.
I appreciate you, Allen. The world you managed to build. The format you have stayed remarkably flexible with. And your commitment to being interesting -and interesting to your own taste- over being formulaic, cynical, or snide.
Thank you for building such a wonderful product and committing to it over so many years. I'm sure this has come with so many sacrifices. I hope you deem them to have been worth it. I sure am grateful you made the time.
You've taught me a lot about film, camera work, and how those things might fit into a larger world. And, while I'm at it, when you introduced your mini-educational series on things like interlacing, color, and frame rate, I was beaming ear to ear! You are exactly the person I would want to learn from regarding those topics! And the lessons absolutely held up remaining some of the clearest, concisest, best demonstrated introductory discussions of topics I have ever found.
Like I said at the top, I enjoy rewatching your work.
So, when it comes to this vfxcool series that never was, I wish there were more entries. But, I don't wish for anything that's outside of your artistic vision. Because what you've chosen to pursue and create using this character has always been surprising, fulfilling, and fun to watch.
I hope you keep going buddy. Thanks for what you've built and shared.
I'm excited to see what you want to see made real next.
Addendum: I don't want to sell the educational videos short. The series designed specifically to teach about color, interlacing, etc. I LOVE that series.
I guess what I'm saying is if you only have so many hours in a day, I hope you keep making what interests you, bc so far, that's been incredibly interesting to me.
I'm not meaning to indict or diminish any existing mini series or any series that was chosen over another one. I'm sure there were reasons for it.
And sincerely, the recent educational video segment is awesome. It's been so helpful. I love it and hope there are more topics to come.

Looking back at these old special effects in any movie that did them, part of me is so glad we can do these things sooo much easier today with computers, while another part of me is sad that we no longer have to be so creative in creating these special effects.
