- Pt 3. Today I have unboxed and thoroughly checked the BYO DIY Jem style guitar kit .
1st impressions are ok but not superb. The good the bad and the ugly.
How will this compare to Guitar Kit Worlds version? We will find out very soon.
Full build video coming soon!

Love what you're doing! IMO, recessing the trem cover on the back may cause clearance issues and add additional cost to the manufacturing process and subsequently the end user. It also protects the paint from scratches if it sits proud of the finish. That said, there SHOULD be a chamfer or rounded edge on it so it doesn't snag on clothing or feel sharp.
For what it’s worth the first thing I do when I get a new guitar is take back cover off and never see it again.
I like magnetic or velcro. lol
Great video Mike
THANKS MARK!
From what I've seen you can upgrade the pickups to what are in the signature SV JEM(?) Don't quote me on that but for an extra 110 bucks they ought to be a lot better than the ones that come with the kit.
Thats what they say. BYO offered to send me a set but never did. I wanted to see how they compare to the Dark Matter 2's . .. BYO does have a excellent kit for sure. Pretty sure they got mad at me when Guitar Kit World won the Jem shootout by a smidge .
@@FultonStreetBeats Just going from your videos, I think that’s the kit I’ll use as well. Seeing as how it also comes with good pickups and a great neck and body, and it’s overall cheaper than the upgraded BYO, seems like a great bargain to me. The only question I have is does it come pre drilled? I don’t know if I trust myself to drill out anything lol
@@trentmckenzie343 mine came predrilled with the exception of the tuning machine screws and the pickguard, and output jack plate screw hole. (All super super easy) .
@@FultonStreetBeats I do have a drill press but I don’t know how confident I am in my abilities to get the holes lined up exactly right for the tuning pegs. Eh I guess it’s not THAT big of a deal, I can always buy a new neck for relatively inexpensive
@@trentmckenzie343 just snug up the tuners in the perfect position before drilling use the tunnel hole as a guide if need be. Or mark the holes with a sharp pencil tip with the tuning machines on first.
Would love to see how it plays out of the box.
Would you say it's got as much playability potential as the Leo James? (With the same upgrades that is)
I'm hoping so. In theory yes. Once its together (Very soon. In lacquer now) we will find out.
Can't wait! I've got one coming soon which will be a big project
@@thomasfeldman3613 you will enjoy it.
Two-sided neck pocket...not good. Every guitar I've ever seen like that, the neck will shift over time and smash into the neck pickup.
Should be noted neck is a veneer.
