From our generation, no matter what country you are from and which team you support, you definitely know the legendary Manu squad of that time. Here Scholes is one of those legends.
Stat Monkeys will never, ever appreciate just how good Paul Scholes was. Great players get record number of goals and assists and high goal involvements per 90mins. Geniuses make the game at the very highest level look simple. Paul Scholes was a genius. There is nothing he couldn't do on a football pitch. Apart from tackling maybe 🤣
I'm a stats monkey and after a deeper dive into the stats he comes out looking fantastic. Higher goals and assists per 90 than Gerrard or Lampard if you don't count penalty goals or assists from set-pieces. More short/long passes and pass completion than basically anyone not called Xavi. More tackles and interceptions per 90 than Gerrard or Lampard too.
That goal against Barcelona in 2008. I was in a bar and I jumped out from chair to scream GOAL! The chair broke up. The bar manager almost charge me for that broken chair. Best midfielder EVER!
@@AlifianAkhmad7 haha anyway the chair was worth it. We qualified to the final beating barcelona with that beautiful goal my friend. I did not mind if I had to pay for the chair. Hahaha!
The 2nd and 13th goals are up there with George Best. Insane vision and touch. I’m no United fan, never liked Scholes much, but those goals are unbelievable.
Insane how good he was. He'd piss it today. Convinced he could still play looking at what's around. You've seen how Erikson has improved utd. imagine a scholsey there.
This player could have triumphed in Spanish football, few English players have really done so, but I have no doubt that Scholes would have triumphed in any team in the world. World class player!!
the most complete midfielder of all time. he can play one touch and does feints like iniesta, long passes like pirlo, short like xavi, arriving late in the box like lampard, he scores glancing headers like tim cahill, long range screamer like gerrard. he does all of them at the highest level.
@@bighas96 Xavi was a better passer than Scholes but Scholes was better defensively, had a better weak foot, had the better goals and was all around a better player overall plus he played all around the pitch from a 2nd striker to CDM and he did it perfectly.Shame that for England he was pushed on the wing to fit Lampard and Gerrard cause those two don't fit in a team that good Scholes and Gerrard would be the best central midfield ever with Xavi and Iniesta cause Pirlo and Gattuso were a CDM combo.
@@Tes_1 Nah, Scholes was brilliant, and United's struggles to control the midfield after he retired proved that to anyone who watched them regularly at the time. The only romanticising people do about Scholes is forgetting that he started out as an attacker, but lacking the height and pace to play up front in a 4-4-2, he moved further and further back over the years as his passing, positioning and ability to control the midfield improved. He was a goal-scoring second striker, then a nr 10, then a box-to-box midfielder, before spending his 30's as a deep-lying playmaker. Central midfielders are always underrated because their greatest assets don't show up clearly in the stats the way goals and assists do, but it's the most crucial position in football, especially in today's game, and a Scholes is exactly what United have been missing ever since he left.

The Panathinakos goal away (15) is really under appreciated. Last minute winner, perfect first touch and finish with his "weaker foot" on the turn. Not a lot of players could score that goal
He was a striker as a kid, and if he'd had either height or speed he'd probably have spent his whole career up front, since as you say he has great instincts as well as being a fantastic finisher with both feet as well as his head.
Everyone seems to talk about the second version of Scholes, the defensive midfielder from around 2005 onwards, but for me the original version, the second striker/attacking midfielder, was so much better.
Not much better, since he was a world class playmaker, just different. Which version would be better for the team depends on the other players avaliable. What would have been really interesting is seeing how many goals a tall or fast Scholes could have scored as a striker. Considering he got around 20 the one season he played regularly behind Van Nistelrooy I'm guessing it would have been quite a lot!
the current England team could do with a player like Scholes, i think he is more suited to todays football compared to the Gerards or Lampards game even-though they both would still be great players if they were playing currently

He was practically conducting the orchestra from when Keane left till he retired . Without Scholsey we had nothing.
The good old days when you could watch the champions league on ITV.
I wasnt old enough to watch football back then but Man Utd and Juventus had some rivalry from the mid 90s to early mid 00s
If Paul Scholes played in the current era, then he would easily be worth at least £120m . This man is most complete central midfielder
