- Battery charging. Semi-autonomous driving. Giant touchscreens. EVs have become computers on wheels. But which EV is the best within a $60,000 budget: the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5 or the Volkswagen ID.4?
WSJ’s Joanna Stern put three of the leading car options to the test on a road trip and then leased the best one. She also called MKBHD for some advice.

why hello there Marques!
Pretty sad when you need to steal someone else's post. Even pinned by the page? Proof they are using post bots to drive traffic just like reddit.
bro stole my comment
@@albertThornyt right? It caught my eye because I had liked your post. They are using post bots to try drive traffic. Says a lot about his channel.
@@Cryaboutmyhandle that’s quite interesting
“Because I’ve always dreamed of having a dongle to charge my car” is the best line to come out of this
Came here to say the same thing 🤣
You completely failed to mention that Ford's BlueCruise only works on *select* highways that have been pre-mapped, which isn't that many. Tesla's semi-autonomous navigation works on *any* highway in the U.S. That's a huge differentiator.
She also didn’t mention Tesla’s phantom braking problem which tries to throw the occupants out thru the windshield. So in both respects, she clearly flubbed the comparisons. /s
The propaganda machine put out one? Amazing stuff!
Teslas works on any highway? Not very well it seems. Better to start mapping like Ford.
Surprised Ford won set driving round. This was good to know.
Ford's BlueCruise in hands off mode works on pre-mapped roads but the hands on version of BlueCruise works on ANY road with lane markings.
@@MachE_VLOG < is either a post bot or rides the shortest bus in town. Don't listen to a word they spew.
You dropped the Kia and the VW at the start with no explanation. I think you should at least mention why they didn't make the cut.

Well the Volkswagen is ugly for one thing.
$$$ and being told to for perks
Why waste time?
As you're considering road tripping I'm surprised you didn't compare cargo space and comfort as well.
That's how you know it's a propaganda piece.
I've driven and reviewed all of these. I can tell you that they are all pretty comfortable and have ample cargo space.
@@MachE_VLOG you are paid to shill and have no idea.
@@MachE_VLOG here solve this riddle or prove how short the bus is you ride. @@Cryaboutmyhandle Nope. Just an EV owner.
Hats off to early adopters of EV's. I consistently annoy them by referring to them as beta testers. But honestly at this point if you are an EV owner, you truly are a beta tester as technologies and standards are still rapidly evolving. There is nothing wrong with owning an EV at this point and they are rapidly maturing but they still stand to mature much more over the next 5 years.
I’d be curious what factors went Into striking down the ev6 and the id4, from the final three shown in the video?
Check didn't come thru.
Two against the Ford or four against the Ford - do the math.

It is totally rigged. Just look at the flimsy criteria!!!! Infotainment and self-drving!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hard to find and harder to find without a mark up
Marquez is NOT A PROFESSIONAL AUTOMOTIVE JOURNALIST. He is a review all tech CZcamsr .
Fun video. Wish she'd gone a little more in depth on some of the functionality, specifically with infotainment. If you count carplay as part of it, I actually prefer the Ioniq's infotainment to tesla model y or 3 (much easier to control climate, and having dual screens is a huge plus). Also, it's easy to set the carplay to go full screen, which would have alleviated her main issue with it.
what do you want , WSJ is not a BEV expert.
Definitely the model Y
Wait… why was the Kia EV6 and Volkswagen ID.4 disqualified from the review after the first 30 seconds? Seems like a notable omission, given they are closer to $40k than these $60k models tested…
VW iD4 is a FAILURE , just look at CHYNA sales.
VW iD4 still has very BUGGY software in 2H 2023 , with no fix.
What planet are you living on? Spec any of those two and they go to $60k fast. The Model Y long range is $49k and that has AWD.
In terms of battery percentage and the range left are we completely certain that they are accurate? As in do we know that the cars travel the exact same miles for each percentage.
What was the point of having Tesla win almost all the rounds if she leased a Ford?
6:52 She really wanted Apple Car Play
because this video was sponsored by Ford
@@simplelife4213Just dont park ford inside until they fix them
Because they tied, so she went with "who did I trust."
It was a tie at the end. MKBHD helped her break the tie. She'd rather have Carplay than the charging network for a car she doesn't plan to roadtrip in.
Bluecruise is only available for certain highways that have been mapped. Not a good comparison
Hand off BlueCruise only works on pre-mapped roads but the hands on BlueCruise works on any road with lane markings.
Well done. Informative.
It is a very good example of advertising by Ford :-)😅
No offense or anything, but she obviously has no idea what she's talking about. We don't know why she ruled the other 2 EV at the beginning (the EV6 and the Ioniq 5 are basically the same car), or why they went on a track since there's no test of the 3 cars in this video although "they had used them at the track a lot". It really feel like it was put together and filmed last minute, without any serious test or even a script in mind, although she said she searched the best car for two months! What about cargo space (and the frunk), space for the passengers, comfort, options if any, the different features, reliability, the price of charging the cars (since they don't have the same battery and consumption)... This video is a joke.
For those that are curious shortly after this video was released Stern went on the Pivot podcast with Kara Swisher and addressed what happened with the first 3 cars she dropped immediately. If I remember it just kind of came down to taste.
Building wealth involves developing good habits like regularly putting money away in intervals for solid investments. Instead of trying to predict and prognosticate the stability of the market and precisely when the change is going to happen, a better strategy is simply having a portfolio that’s well prepared for any eventually, that’s how some folks' been averaging 150K every 7week these past 4months according to Bloomberg.
That’s crazy, I’m just doing everything wrong with my portfolio.
The US-Stock Mrkt had been on it’s longest bull-run in history, so the mass hysteria and panic is relatable considering we’re not accustomed to such troubled mrkts, but there are avenues lurking around if you know where to look. My wife and I are retiring this year with over $7,000,000 in tax deferred investments. up until 3 years ago we were 100% in the S&P. During bear markets we had a perfect plan. We got an investment manager in our corner and didn’t look at our portfolio for nearly a year.
Same here, 75% of my portfolio is in the red and I really don’t know how long I can stomach the losses. I’m beginning to reach a breaking point.

Did you drive to the race track just to go slowly around it for a few shots?
Thank You Joanna this video was very helpful and well made.
Great reporting thanks
@0:49 the picture for ID.4 is incorrect, is the same as the Ioniq 5
49 seconds in your video, you have two images of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, one of which is labeled Volkswagen ID.4.
…
Big oversight.
Indeed
Good Presentation. Very informative I LIKE the guitar Riffs!
Thank you. Very concise and informative! I'm not sure the access to charging stations is where it needs to be in the Midwest. I looked into renting an EV for a trip and NOT ONE company offered them. When I looked at charging stations along the route, it was pretty dicey
If you lived in California, charging stations would be easy to find. But if I lived in the midwest, I would lease a hybrid and wait until more charging stations came online.
Great video 😊
4:50 dcfc is just that. its not lvl 3. its incorrectly referred to.
No cost comparison? Model Y auto lane change needs $6k EAP option (or $100/month subscription). BlueCruise 1.2 after 90 days for auto lane change on the Mach-E is $2,100 for 3 years, then $800 a year on year 4+.
What about insurance cost between Model Y and Mach-E? I see Mach-E has 1.9% APR for 60 months.
I think the lease option is the wisest bit of advice here. The tech keeps getting better and better. Really happy to see the Ford being close to Tesla and hope Hyundai smartens up and goes with the NACS. I really hope for lots of options in the future :)
Interesing video, but it does seem the USA is quite behind in (non Tesla) charging. Here in Europe, Tesla's now come with CCS and it has basically become the Euro (world even if we exclude the Japanese CHADEMO) standard. Having to to trickle charge is, at least where I live, increasingly rare.
I would imagine its EU regulation, America should do they same. EU also forced all android phones to use one type of charger and now is forcing apple to adopt usb c like the rest
The Model Y and Mach-E are the best of this group for sure. You picked the wrong one in the end, but it's still a nice little car.
Definitely picked the wrong one
Agreed! Not to mention Ford caps the performance of the Mach-e for 5 seconds
Also from my understanding when two vehicles are changing on the same charge the max output of the charge is cut in half I wonder if only one vehicle was changing on one charge if the charge will charge the vehicle in 3-4 hours not take 6 hours to charge
How can you give ford the win for self driving when it only works on some roads, while Tesla has full self driving capabilities?
@mkbhd Why can't you recommend non-teslas to road trippers? Other EVs can fast charge too... is it fast charger accessibility?
there is no greater joy then launching the rise on the back side slamming the car right as you hit the downhill corner
People need to STOP CHARGING TO 100%!! It wastes time at chargers especially when other people need to charge and it is horrible for the battery. It enough people are telling people what they need to know.
When the car displays 100% that isn’t really 100% capacity of the battery pack. Usually there is some healthy margin built in.
@@christophscholzThis may differ by manufacturer, but if you look at the cell voltages on a Tesla battery, you’ll see that 100% is basically 100%, which is why they tell you not to charge that high except if you really need it right before a road trip. They do have a healthy buffer on the *bottom* end though.
Totally agree . This is a horrible analysis. Charging to the last 20% takes the most home. She should only charged enough to get back home per top the next charger.
That's a mistake. The Model Y is a much better car. When she took over on the highway when it was doing the exit she was just scared. If you are looking at the screen it is clear the car was going to take the exit, she took over after she was on the offramp. I don't know how "Lane Change Unavailable" is a comforting message. Literally means the car doesn't feel confident enough when it is clearly safe to change lanes. Points to its unreliability. Also, 2-3 times a year of supercharging for 6+ hours at a time? + I don't think already built cars are even compatible with the future transition to Tesla Chargers.
Ford will ship a free adapter later this year to Mach-E and F150 Lighting owners, this according to the press release from Ford when they announced that they will adopt the Tesla charging stations. Future Ford EVs will come equipped with a port compatible with Tesla chargers.
I rechecked the announcement, and there was nothing about it being free. It might be for the 2024 models (included in price), but I am pretty sure us 2022 and 2023 model owners will get the opportunity to pay. Also, it is likely to be 1st quarter 2024, not this year.
Yay for early adoption right? Lol
1:35 great video overall! Just want to mention that the labeling of the vehicles are incorrect.
My Escape 2006 Hybrid has the original battery and it still works ! Can still tool around at low speeds on the battery. Incredible.
That battery costs $15K. Are you going to replace it when it dies?
Leasing is the best advice to give when getting an EV. That's what we did with our Volvo.
FALSE , you pay too much on a Lease .
OWNERSHIP has benefits of YOU owning the ASSET .

@@205rider8 if you trade cars alot and don't put tons of miles, its the better option.
Owning a car is not the same as owning a house. A car value can only go down, what’s the point of owning an asset which you lose 10 - 20% the second the tires are out of the dealership, and it’s value can only decreases with time?
I know this video is about full EV cars but, I was going to buy a plug-in hybrid, but now I'm not sure if I should lease instead.
Don’t waste money on hybrid!!! I did before I got my Teslas. Dumb move on my part.

I really enjoyed the video, but unfortunately you didn’t mention the trims of the vechicles and that was frustrating for me😂
Why were the KIA and VW eliminated early - would love to know more
VW was late smelling the gas pump fumes
Ford has a way bigger battery to do the same miles..higher charging costs. The new AI self drive on Telsa is insane now
Can it spot a stopped police car with flashing lights?
SemmaConnect has chargers at my apartment, it was very unreliable. Since the merger, the billing has been wrong, so I stopped charging. If you don’t control your own charging, the plug-in hybrids give you outs that an EV wouldn’t

Watch out what size tire on the ev all telsa uses 20" tires but 1 a 19 " reason is ev wear out tire 3 x faster than gas car, 6,000-10,000 miles reason is it has as much
torque as a gas car at
3,000 rpm. So burning or slipping the tread at Low turning and take off. The 20" tire cost 200-500 buck each. They are super low profile and not all places carry that tire.
Great video and a lot of work to put this together! I wonder how accurate the range display is. We all know that five bars on a Samsung cell phone is not the same as five bars on an iPhone. As far as I know there are no standards and car manufacturers might be tweaking the range display to support their narrative.
Yes, would have been better to look at the consumption and then figure out the range manually.

It’s not.
How much did you get paid?
Yesssss I want a mach e so much. It's cool to see someone directly compare it to a teslas and NOT pick the tesla bc all I hear is "Teslas are the best evs!" Its okay to like Teslas, it's not okay to try and push other people into what you want.
Bro did they really change the title because they realized how much of a hit piece it was against tesla?
Excellent video! Joanna and team, would you mind reviewing the Chinese BYDs? They are becoming increasingly common in developing countries such as Colombia and are very affordable in comparison to these.
I find it very interesting that the infotainment was rated as a tie between the Tesla and the Ford when the integrated Zoom app on Tesla's infotainment system - which is what was used to video call with MKB - was prominently demonstrated. It shows a clear edge I think, in addition to the navigation integration.
No CarPlay is an instant disqualifier for myself and many.
@@dtemp132lol CarPlay sucks. I felt the same before getting the model 3 but now I never think about CarPlay and honestly prefer teslas software now. It is much more fluid and connected to the car and has everything you need. Plus Tesla is working on an AppStore for developers to create more apps
@@dtemp132 what apps are missing on Tesla that you use on CarPlay?
@@dtemp132 depends on what the infotainment can offer. Many might think that was a disqualifier before they tried the Tesla infotainment. After they use it they don't miss car play.

You are performing maintenance on two powertrains. I’ll never buy another internal combustion engine. Sick of “fix or repair daily” (FORD)
@@AirmanJH As someone that owns ICE vehicles (that I have no immediate plans to replace and certainly not with a BEV) and a Tesla, how much maintenance do you really expect to do on a Prius 4 cyl that only occasionally runs? Those things go forever, an oil change every year or two is probably all you'll need for 200k+ on the ICE part of that vehicle. Trust it to a long (15+ year) calendar life more than the Tesla we own. I just have no desire to own and drive a Prius, but there is obvious use case for them that would work for so many people.
@@tazeatI owned a Prius. Although I enjoyed driving the car, I had to do frequent maintenance and repairs. And the battery died at 65k miles. I would estimate that the engine ran 60-70% of the time I drove it.
My use case for EV is driving from suburbs to city for work, and the only advantage Tesla have over the competition in that regard is Sentry Mode, especially when Im in the city. I find it so incredibly frustrating that only Tesla takes built in dashcams serious. GM could easily add Sentry Mode to their lackluster OnStar service plan so customers have a reason to subscribe.
Mustang Mach E is like 15k USD more expensive than a Model 3 crazy how she didn't care about that

I think you should’ve done a winter range test. The heat pump in modern Teslas work well and I have a feeling the real world range in winter will be significantly better than the Ford.
My thought as well. Winter range will be important in NJ. Mach e will lose range much quicker
@@buzzyvideo They all will lose range in cold weather. Or did you want to prove you have no idea like op?
Others have done that including Edmunds and they found out that the heat pump doesn't actually help Tesla that much.
My experience with 4 EVs is the Tesla will retain the most range. The bolt would lose 30% in winter.
Consumer Reports did a test of several EVs and it shows that all EVs including Tesla lose a decent amount of range in cold weather. The heat pump is not a significant difference maker. You can Google "CR Tests Show Electric Car Range Can Fall Far Short of Claims" to see the data.
Where is the id.4?
the big problem with "self driving" at the level it is now, is that you have to be ready to take over, whats the point of having it?

Great video. Thanks! I appreciate your "just the facts, ma'am" approach to this. Because it was WSJ, I was expecting anti-EV bias, but saw none.
didn't learn much here. She could have given a final score to each. No substantive reason for choosing the Ford at the end other than she trusts Ford self-driving capability more and that category was the only one that really mattered at the end of the day
As a Chinese who recently purchased a XPENG P7i in Shanghai, this video seems extremely weird to me, the three cars in this video represents the best EVs in the US market but are all somewhat lackluster compared to my car, especially the ford and the Hyundai in the infotainment system integration and ADAS capabilities. And the charging infrastructure in the US astound me by its inconsistency, you guys have different charging ports with different EVs? And the 3rd party charging stations all need proprietary apps to work? (In China the 3rd party stations all can be accessed thru WeChat). This is the first time I genuinely think China is miles ahead against the US
I’m biased since I own a Mach E, and have been very pleased with it but like everything each has it pros and cons. For me I like the styling of the Ford better and in terms of build quality/fit and finish for me the Ford outshines Tesla and I like having Wireless Apple CarPlay and a separate instrument cluster above the steering wheel. However Tesla definitely has the advantage on charging and tech features/software upgrades/UI full stop. I’ll be glad to get to use the supercharger network in 2024 when it opens up to Ford. Also in my experience regarding range Ford gives you pretty accurate range indications from start to finish whereas Tesla in most instances seems to be exceedingly optimistic until it hits 50% state of charge and then it starts being more realistic. Tesla does have a heat pump though. I think both are great cars. One thing though for me based on where I happen to live is that there are no Tesla service centers in my state at all whereas Ford has dealerships in basically any town that has a dealership so for me owning the Mach E makes more sense in that regard due to my location.
A lot of the Ford dealers don’t do a lot of the service work on EVs. In fact, my local dealer is completely opposed to even selling them.
