  • I'm done with the WLtoys 104001. So much hype after the success of the 144001 & 124019 (and of course the A959-B), and IMO it's a massive Flop. Stock is not powerful enough, chassis is too flexible, and now with these Carbon Fibre upgrades not fitting... I AM DONE with this RC Car! (I don't think the Carbon Fibre parts are made by WLtoys).
    Ok Ok ...... Junk RC Car is a bit harsh, it's 'okay' for the money... got your attention though ;)

    That's funny when Makerfire was asking my opinion about the carbon fibre chassis a few weeks ago they clearly explained I would have to bend the front kick on the chassis myself. I wonder why they didn't clearly explain this to you also? That's a real shame, anyhow this is far better than a 144001 or a 124019 for speed run. Keep an eye on my channel to see what these cars are really capable of 😎

    • @TomleyRC
      @TomleyRC  Před 3 lety

      The Carbon chassis is also about 2mm shorter and the front diff case holes are miss aligned. You also can’t heat carbon to bend it, it won’t hold its shape and you’ll more likely deform it.
      I’m in no doubt it’s better for speed runs...it’s bigger, wider and looks like you can gear it better. The fun for me though is getting the crazy speeds from the little ones. They’d be better selling the 104001 as a roller and knock about 25% of the price off.

The top-end race cars aren't cheap to build or equip, but they come mostly dialed out of the box with very little need for additional modifications (mainly bearings, but you can get around that by just washing the grease pack out of the bearings and replacing it with bearing oil).

  • @3Y3ECE
    @3Y3ECE Před 3 lety +3

    An honest, full scale review of the newest wl toys. I gotta say man, I feel your pain. I did all the same upgrades to my a979b, and aluminum seems to be a terrible choice for a chassis, at least, in the thicknesses that the rc engineers are putting out. 2mm and 3mm is hardly enough to help an arrma kraton 8s survive any kind of impact at any kind of speed. I believe that they could work, but flat metal is not the way to go with aluminum. If they added fluting, scalloping or even basic beam-style supports for those frames, all solid-state, they could be a dream!
    But the carbon fiber, that stuff is a win, when done right. The a979b carbon fiber chassis needed sanding as well, where the differentials go. The wheel arms need to be able to sit lower than parallel with the chassis, and in order to accomplish that, you have to bevel the outer edges of the differential seats to a 45 degree angle to allow for the shocks to push out to their maximum extension.
    But, that $75 car, that $25 chassis, $100 for electronics upgrades, $50 for the aluminum kit, $75 in tires now because I needed to buy the aluminum rim wheels because the speed and power of the upgraded 550 motor literally snaps off plastic rims. 3x sets of plastic rims now, the stock, redcats volcano-16 tires (micro badlands, I was so excited), and some off brand monster truck-esque tires, which were nice and squishy and soft foams... Way too soft, apparently...
    Yeah, my a979b is almost done now. It also almost $400. So you really do get what you pay for. With most rc's, if you want them to be prime and top notch, you will probably end up paying 4x what the car cost. Food for thought!
    Love your videos and your honesty my friend, keep doing what you do!!

    Agreed, you get what you pay for. Many will buy the cheap WLToys “stuff” and then dump 3X the car price into trying to make it look like something hobby grade. Spend the money up front and save the hassles later on. The difference in the electronics alone justifies the price.

    The front kickup does two things. It has a similar effect to adding caster in that it makes the car inherently want to track straight but it also makes the cars go over bumps more smoothly because the arms are angled upwards at the front a bit so are more responsive to the wheels hitting obstacles.

      QC stands for "quality control". Traxxas tends to let lemons slip through the cracks more often than other brands.
      As an example, I actually have a Slash 4x4 VXL that will not move under its own power unless you push it first, and it was like that from the factory. This should have never been allowed to ship.
      The reason I would only recommend the brushed Traxxas vehicles for beginners has less to do with reliability and more to do with durability. Traxxas uses the same plastic parts on both the brushed models and their brushless counterparts, so the brushless models are more likely to break in the event of a crash due to them carrying significantly more kinetic energy. Technically this is also the case for Arrma's models but apart from some chassis issues with the Kraton platform Arrma tends to overbuild their cars to an extreme.

    3 steps of r n d.
    1. make the best product ever.
    2. find ways to make it cheap as much as possible without breaking the initial product.
    3. using cosmetics to hide details that give off the cheapness..
    4. go back to step 2 and see what else you can remove and make 2 variants without the "exclusive" better equipment..
    5. just like step 3 but to cover the new variant flaws to make the better model look " more expensive" and justify a 200$ price bump.

    How you remember all those numbers of those cars is beyond me. Wltoys must name their cars by punching the number pad on the keyboard. Yeah, naming cars is hard, but simply using last week's lottery numbers as the name isn't ideal either.
    Appreciate the honesty and love the humor.
    I've also got a car that became a parts donor after the first couple of runs... The Mammoth Blitz (I think that was the name). It was the clone of the HPI Apache. Anyway, this scenario reminds of what happened to me a few years back with that Mammoth thing. Some cars just aren't worth the money AT ALL, so really appreciate the honesty here. Well done. 👍😎

    • @TomleyRC
      @TomleyRC  Před 3 lety

      The first 2 numbers are the scale.... as for the others... your guess is as good as mine haha. I often will except that some stuff is a lesser quality, and that’s usually reflected in the price. But this thing was just pushed out off the hype of the smaller scale ones that everyone is running (which are decent for the money). Putting crappy electronics in, and sub standard metals ruined what good have been a half decent buggy. As for the Carbon.... well 😅

    I ended up making a one-piece CF top plate which significantly improved the chassis stiffness. Also used went with some softer springs all around to get some good droop.
    What’s crazy is a lot of the plates on the WL car are steel, not even aluminum and super heavy.
    This car also needs a slipper of some sort otherwise you’ll keep breaking gears.

    Tomley. I truly believe that they designed it to have that curvature in the chassis that way like you are supposed to kink the chassy back and put those. Screws in when everything lines up because if you just have a king from the factory. Then you have a hard line that will break but if the same amount of tension is brought through the entire front of the chassis. It's less likely to break in that 1 single spot and Snap the nose off. It makes sense to me at least I think there's a reason it is the way it is. I would revisit it if I were you or if you want. I'll either get one or whatever.
    Or do I give away or sell it to me? I don't care. I'm just saying I think you should revisit this and go back in and actually try to make this work because I i think you're missing somthing
