The Westerly homeowners want sleek shelves on the fireplace wall that’s covered with shiplap. Jeff Sweenor shows Kevin O'Connor his technique for installing the floating white oak shelves and mantle. They screw cleats on the wall that will receive the shelves. The oak shelves were previously assembled, glued, and dado-cut on the table saw in his shop.

How to Install Floating Shelves and Mantel | This Old House
/ thisoldhouse - Jak na to + styl
Those floating shelves look awesome!!!
That's amazing workmanship. Those miter corners are absolutely perfect. And the fitting on the wall was just bang on. Great job
My all-time favourite This Old House expression: It's not going anywhere. :)
Nice tip on using that painters tape while installing the shelves. I would have done that as well......after I scuffed up the sides of the cabinet.
"Oh, hell, I should have used painters tape to protect them"
3:47 I like how these pieces just folded so snuggly
It seems like he has all the time in the world to build it perfectly.
😂 I expect it took all afternoon to shoot that scene, what with rehearsing the conversation and ensuring they didn't block each other in shot or cause shadows.
Then practicing both working together to get the placing of the shelves spot on "first time".
And if, as some suggested, the mounting tongue of the mantle piece moved, the time to reinstall it.
In short I don't believe the scene time bore any resemblance to real time.
Somehow I don't suppose the producers want any cock ups in the clip.
Having said that there must be a "few bloopers" after nearly forty years of filming.
Don't suppose we'll ever get to see them in a hurry ...
Excellent work guys. Good Craftsmanship I definitely learned something
If you want the best contractor in the Boston area you hire Jeff Sweenor. He isn't cheap but you will get some of the finest craftsmanship you've ever seen. Really love how This Old House started to feature his work.
MS ToH clearly understand the need to feature quality builders ... not forgetting to showcase decent tools ...
But there again has ToH ever featured duff builders?
The producers have to keep up production values in both senses.
(Doubtless we'll get the usual "hack job" comments from someone who knows a much better builder ... but can't quite recall their name ... )
I like how he conserve the wood by mitering the mantle pieces together, instead of gluing 3 lengths of oak and having to remove most of the inside material.
Rob B
The whole point of him fabricating it that way is
1) to save material
2) so there is no end grain exposed
There is no other practical way. It just makes sense.
@@grillo7196 Matthew, I completely understand why he did it. I was just making a comment because there's a lot of DIYers that don't have a clue. I own a carpentry business, been doing carpentry since I was 12 years old with my father's company. But thanks for your input.
Cool. Gonna do this next weekend.
Very interesting never heard of floating shelves.
Your work is brilliant
Great stuff 👍🏽
Looks great? Only the cleat is secured to the wall? Nothing fastening the shelf to the cleat other than the tight fit?
Greetings from Iraq and an amazing wood working overall .. well done
One of my tenants wanted me to install 2 of these floating shelves that were 4' long, 2'' thick and 12'' deep onto a wall that had only 1/2'' sheet rock with only one stud to grab. I told them it ain't happening. They thought I was crazy because they see shows like this and thought they could be installed anywhere, not true. Still, beautiful shelves !
That’s not possible, if the shelves were 4’ long there should be minimum of 3 studs in that wall over that large of a span. Either way it can still be done they have extremely strong drywall anchors which on their own isnt much but put 5-6 in and screw into that stud it is more than strong enough.
Hmm, perhaps you might have asked your tenants if they had ever heard of the concept of a free standing shelf unit ... and then pointed them in the direction of IKEA😂😂😂😂.
Ross Kneebone They obviously didn’t want that.
@@VegetaIsBetterThanGoku Fair enough, so not IKEA then. Does your "Home Depot" do shelving units?
Kevin that is some great looking shelves.
wtf?
@@HipsterDoofus100 I wasn't saying that his work was good I was referring to the shelves in general.
Dope
Sure looks nice.
I'm in Maryland. Do you have any recommendations for workmanship in the DMV area?
Tommy's driver makes yet another appearance without him. lol
What if you wanted to change out the shelves to a different style floating? That seems to permanent. The metal or wooden dowels that are anchored in allow changing of shelves.
A different style of mounting or a different type of shelf wood?
Anything can move or break unless you say, "Oh yeah, that thing's not going anywhere."

Lol
Beautiful, from the middle of (burning) California
I did something very similar in my house, except I used all walnut.
I absolutely love how nicely walnut mills up. My favorite species of wood to work with.
@@plasmac9 Absolutely. Walnut coated with Rubio Monocoat is my favorite combo.
How did he fasten the miters on the mantel. Did he nail them or just rely on glue? If he nailed them, how did he hide the nail holes? If glued, what did he use for glue, wood glue, polyester or epoxy?
Great video, but very few homes have that much solid material to easily hang cletes.
Would've loved to see this install in a brick/stone fireplace.
That's an easy one with some RedHeads, but how about they show those shelves hanging off of sheet rock ? !!
@@augustreil that would be great too. I loved the fabrication of it, but I wanted to see an option for the 99% of us that dont have an inch and a half of plywood to anchor too.
@@mattgrundy27, Agree 100%
@@HipsterDoofus100, Not the ones my tenants wanted hung. They wanted me to install 2 of these floating shelves that were 4' long, 2'' thick and 12'' deep onto a wall that had only 1/2'' sheet rock with only one stud to grab. I told them it ain't happening.
It’s called studs. All homes/walls have them......
👍👍👍
Kitchen mostly
I would never make a tv compete with a fireplace.
Woukd they use a template jig to get the floating shelf dimensions exact, like for stair treads?
So what keeps the shelves from sliding off the cleats
Usually a couple screws going up from underneath so they aren’t seen and later filled with putty. Plus they didn’t show it on the side shelves but the mantle they used wood glue. Once that dries the wood becomes one piece.
Might be the contractor engineered an "interference fit"?
However, would suggest that in a lot of cases the niche or gap to "each" or "either" or "both" sides of the chimney breast is anything but square or plumb or flat.
Certainly not in a brick and plastered construction.
The "easy" solution, in UK at least, is to forget the "floating" aspect and simply to use ledgers and, if you think you're up to it, attempt to scribe to the wall.
Mind you after a few weeks nobody notices the fixings and everyone's happy (amazed) it's still up.
1:45 He said that he was putting tape on either side but the picture shows it on both sides so which is correct?
Either can be used both ways meaning like “either or” or in this case saying “either side” means both sides.

He pulled on the mantle it started to fall
I thought that too! But then on a second look I believe it was the camera changing its position giving the impression it had moved.

Why oh why put one on the seam, one just off and one that n the middle of the board....
Not so fan for the look, but oh boy the damage there is to be made when someone wants to remove those and replace with something else.
Lately there has been a lot of "one way, one time only" installations, with limited or no access to do repairs and maintenance etc.
We love it when you're so positive 😂😂😂.
@@t1n4444 love it when the owner needs to do something for those....
It is a "design before form" situation in that.
Like so many are against the idea to pull all electric wires and water pipes and all in surface, maybe just add a cases to hide them. But oh boy do the owners and workers like that when you need to do repairs and services that all is accessible and cheap to do....
But hey, what will contractor do when paying customer demands something?
@@paristo In response to your last paragraph, you will rise to the occasion and do your usual exemplary job.
anyone else notice that they all use the same ugly a$$ drills? I wonder if they make all of the trades use them when they are going to air on TV
They always use festool which is an extremely reliable brand. They make fantastic tools however that drill is 5x the cost of any other drill so most people myself included can’t stomach paying that much.
Kevin True but ryobi is dirt cheap i can use and abuse them and just buy new ones. Lol. Plus they are a lot more versatile. Much cheaper batteries, a larger variety of cordless tools and they are so cheap I can load up 4-5 trucks fully equipped with multiple batteries, sawsalls, circular saws, impact drivers, drills, vacuums etc for just a few grand. To do the same to one truck with festool is a huge investment to say the least. It’s definitely worth it in the long run you are certainly right on that but it’s just that, it’s a huge investment that will take a long time to pay off.
@@VegetaIsBetterThanGoku Hmm, but have you considered that Festool's target market is not the construction industry but the millions and millions of DIY fans across America?
I would suggest, as if it wasn't obvious, that some of these millions of wannabe home improvers watch ToH, see Festool tools being used and buy them in the belief that if Tommy uses them they must be ok tools so they'll use them too.
For some the cost of a tool is not a limiting factor.
In fact I would further suggest (but slightly tongue in cheek) most tool manufacturers don't want construction workers using their tools as they're most likely to break them and want replacements under warranty or make complaints about then on social media platforms.
You make an excellent point about buying shedloads of cheaper tools because the manufacturers are still making shedloads of money either way.
Ross Kneebone Like I said they are great tools and worth it, but all of my experience in this field and the thousands of guys I’ve worked with not ONCE did I see any of them pay more then $100-$150 on a drill. In fact most buy a $40 ryobi or $80 dewalt the festool drill is any where from $350-$600!!! I can buy between 8-15 ryobi drills and have a squad of men working making me more money then that would save. Now a wood worker and precision carpenter like Tom I can definitely see using these as their works relies on fine detail and perfection. They use the tools constantly usually alone and have a small set up but still work the hell out them. This instance is very rare and as I said thousands of guys most of who have heard of the praise festool gets still go with the cheaper option so it can be easily replaced.
@@VegetaIsBetterThanGoku Can't disagree there.
Another reason why UK builders on site don't buy expensive tools as they'll get nicked (stolen).
Why not make sure that you are truly saved by Jesus Christ and practice this way. Remorsefully confess with your heart your sins to Jesus Christ who is God and tell Him that you right now are repenting of your sins and you want to be born again of the Spirit from above. Tell Jesus that you are remorsefully sorry for breaking His commandments and that you are begging for forgiveness from Him. Allow His blood from the cross to wash away your sins. After this is done with your heart successfully the Holy Spirit will come to live within you and He will rebuild you from the inside out.
Look for signs that you are saved. Things like spreading the good news from Jesus, getting other people saved, a craving for the word of God, reading the Bible, etc… These things are known as a calling and fruit bearing. If you're not bearing fruit then keep doing it. Sometimes it takes time to get saved. Read Matthew chapter 13 from the King James Bible. God bless!!!
