    Nice lesson,Thanks madam. The best way of identifying the Raags is listening of Classical music either Carnatic or Hindustani. I used to listenCarnatic &Hindustani music for 10 years Continuously through Radio. I can identify any Raag for Both music. I am not learned any type of music then.So listening of music is best way my point of view.

    Nice demo of differentiating gamakas. The title of the video readily attracted me. As soon as it started, it was clear that it is for people who can identify swaras, i.e., those who have formal training in music. However, there are people who, despite not being able to identify a single swaram (note), can identify over 50 raagas, sometimes within seconds through aalapana, kriti or swarakalpana be it vocal or instrumental. This is what they said about the subject:
    “The prerequisites are passionate and attentive listening along with decent memory built over a period of time. Here is the formula for identifying a raagam:
    If a song ‘A’ is sounds like a song ‘B’ and if the song ‘B’ is in raagam ‘C’, then ‘A’ is likely to be raagam ‘C’. (Mathematically speaking, if A = B and if B = C, then A = C; which is known as transitive property of equality).
    It requires skill to relate song A with song B, memory to recall song B with its raagam C and passion to link song A to raagam C. (The item ‘A’ need not have to be a song (kriti) but can be an item such aalaapana or swara kalpana.) This method has good success rate, though there can be exceptions.”
    Enthusiasts can watch an excellent video by veena vidushi Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresan about identifying raagas: czcams.com/video/g4llzlnr-AI/video.html

    So beautifully put!! I mainly identify raagas based on intuition!! So for example, if I feel like a song has the raaga of naatai, I would always go back and sing a line of mahaganapatim manasasmarami to confirm🥰🥰😍😍

    • @prasannasridharan3730
      @prasannasridharan3730 Před 3 lety +2

      Yes I too do the same. The only problem is some ragas are called modes or in other words can be played with same notes interval but a different starting note. This is called graha bhedam. So many times I get confused whether a song starts with sa or pa. Based on that, raga can change. e.g. charukeshi/gourimanohari or karaharapriya/harikamboji

    I'm curious about time signatures in Indian music....in Western music, there is a clear pattern of how many beats per bar there can be. It's second nature for me to pick out a time signature when listening to music...Unless it's Indian. Does this concept exist in Indian music? It must, humans love their patterns, I'm curious to learn more about it.

      Taala is the rhythmic system ; but it is quite different from western time signatures. It is a cycle of syllables inside a fixed number of beats for exemple 8, 12, 16. By listening to a lot of tabla (like ishala app or other similar looping apps) you can learn to tap with it and try to understand it. It took me a few months but it naturally comes with familiarisation. it is way more complex in my opinion

    It's very disappointing. The pronounciations of various words take them away from originality.
    Like सम्स्कृत is pronounced as सन्स्कृत (in North India) or सौङ्स्कृत (in Maharashtra and down South) or Sanskrit (san pronounced like can, ban, ran - by English medium people).
    These are termed as अपभ्रम्श.
    Like योग has become योगा and राग has become रागा. Very sad.
