My parents live in the hills of NW Durham, UK where winters can be severe. My father's Isuzus have never failed to start in all kinds of severe weather.
Winter kills car batteries 🥶😁😁
I have a friend - fellow 300tdi owner and a British engineer - who claims that cold starts wear engines, and "plugs in" his Disco 1 even on summer days!
I had a Mitsubishi AWD car that I once started north of Montréal at around -50C. Yes - I had a block heater and 0W-30 synthetic oil. I then proceeded to pull people out of the ditch, since the local plough operators had kindly plowed the snow flat right over the ditches, so unless you knew the road... whoops!
I later drove that car to Death Valley and started it at about +50C. I wonder how many people get to do that with the same vehicle? It survived +500K kms. I just don't look after my stuff, I guess
I started mine in -10 c , it idles fine too.
You can't beat those Isuzus, never had an issue with the cold start, but never really gets that cold in Australia haha.
I could never work out why LR didn't fit these as STD instead of messing about with the TD, 200Td and 300Tdi - same fuel economy, but more torque, and in my opinion a better engine, and never beaten
Britannica Restorations Ltd surely you know that anything over 2.5ltr engine capacity incurred greater tax on export through out Europe. The Isuzu is much much more heavy duty and better engineered than either Tdi. The Td5 was their best effort and not too bad. The downside to the Isuzu is its weight and it’s torque pulsing...
It is an excellent engine. They were fitted as standard to our county models for a time down under.
@@BritannicaRestorations hi Dave, as a 66 year old retired plant fitter living in malaysia, I was wondering whether to replace my tired 2.5 petrol with an Isuzu? Does the isuzu need lots of mods to fit it in, I have plenty of time and patience. I enjoy watching your videos, old school stuff always works, regards Ed Snowdon.
It is possible to retro fit the 4bd1 into a 110 or stage 1 Series 109 with factory parts but they can be very difficult to find.
from what i know the diesel kiki pumps never had a cold start level. the ones that are fitted to the isuzu 110s here have the 2 on top which is start stop and throttle. there is a little on the the RHS which looks like a snail shell which is for adjusting the amount of fuel into the motor under full load. i have removed my grub screew and run all the fuel and control the egts with boost from a moded td04.
TBH i cant remeber the last time i used the glow plugs in my 4bd1 and the old mans arnt connected at all. but they love a good battery and i have found the closer you get to 1000cca the better they start which we run 2 of in our battery compartment with a soildnoid between them as a dual battery and cold start setup.
Gotta love them webasto heaters
this has an electric heater
I also have a Perentie in the UK. Just fitted a turbo, what a tool. I cheat in the winter. I have am extra battery that plugs in at the back and comes out in the summer.
Did you fit the turbo pump? I heard they are different, but I can hardly find any info on mine
Beast of an engine and next year will get a full intercooler
@@BritannicaRestorations Yes, I bought the manifold from Ebay £100 from China. Turbo from Ebay GT28 £118. Made most of the rest including the new exhaust. Will fit a boost gauge next week. Like you no inter cooler fitted yet. Perentie 6x6 uses 4bd1t with no inter cooler, so I decided to try without first. Send me an email address and I'll send you some pictures.

@@davidbaggett8282 i run a td04 at 30psi with not intercooler. she a bit of a weapon thats for sure
Hello. I've a 4JB1 in a series 2a. It isn't mad on a cold start and huffs a touch of unburned diesel for a time then goes clear. It is fitted with a block heater (Kenlowe branded) but I've never used it.
Hi Mike, Is it like the pump on the VM engines on the RRC, They have a wax thermostat to up the revs and move a lever to boost fuel.
This is an in line pump like an olf Fordson major!
Open to anyone including Mike.
Pro's and Con's of Block heaters versus the heaters that you plumb in which have a pump.
Great video Mike. I wonder if you could do a video about mounting the spare on the bonnet and the pros and cons of such an idea?
I had one & main downside was as a short-arse visibility was badly limited
mines mounted on the bonnet. comes in very handy for keeping the bonnet from lifting and also as a step to get on the roofrack from the front
cons are its heavier to lift the bonnet
I'm 6 foot and it is not an issue for visibility =- what is a royal pain in the arse is the wheel filling with snow and ice - in better weather rain fills the pressing of the wheel and constantly sprays water on the windscreen
Oh and a pain in the arse to lift! Heavy
and you can't lift the bonnet vertical to get at the clutch fluid reservoir...
Dont these have a wind up hand throttle, it's just a knob that turns and makes the accelerator cable pull out a little and let the engine idle more quickly,I've seen them on a lot of diesels including my kia pregio van.
Not on this one
Winter is coming again Mike.
Did you ever find out it has a cold start lever?
Nope =not had time - looks like I need to remove the pump to find out
mike get yourself one of those chinese wabasto rip off heaters cheap and they work been looking on ebay gonna buy one myself with the remote so i can warm car up from the house its a must for you
I was approached to be a reseller of these in Canada but when I asked about parts availability I was not convinced - they wanted me to strip out ones I had to replace parts under warranty
@@BritannicaRestorations i would just buy one for your own vehicle only £120 .00 which aint bad
They're that cheap for a reason, and the risks of faults are more than it just not working - they also include carbon monoxide poisoning and fire. Given how many people receive the Chinese counterfeits with missing parts or cracked casings, I don't think it's a wise choice. Planar seem to have a much better reputation without Eberspacher or Webasto prices.
That's super cheap = the Webasto's circuit board costs more than that!
Ref nick boylen comment they are cheap as they are from china have a look on youtube not a bad word has been spoken about them I only go by what people say
Can you do a video on installing a Webasto heater?
tempted - I have the heater but not much free time
Britannica Restorations Ltd Youhave the heater? Great, cant wait to see the instal video now. Theres the Webasto and the Eberspacher, theres ones that heat the engine coolant and others that heat only the cabin? Id like to find out more about these and fit a Webasto if thats the better choice to heat my engine up on a renote or a timer before i need to start it. There is little information i can find on installing them in a defender and the only thing i seem to remember is that Landrover instal them next to the gearbox or transfer box? Id love to fit one in our defender 2008 model, its got air con but i don’t bloody need that at this time of year as much as heat 😀and these things take ages to heat as you know! How about i buy you a nice bottle of malt from here in Stirling, Scotland and send it over, would that help you decide on an installation vid and your usual practical doon tae earth advice?
You havent got that snow blower yet mate ...!?
I pay a guy with a loader to clear my place - quicker and less hassle
That battery sounds like it’s either too old or too small for that motor...
