      I remember listening to the debut album in my room with poster of him on my walls, staring at that album cover fixated on that guitar he's holding, thinking it was the coolest looking guitar ever! When I heard that he passed,a part of that wide eyed youth that was me died with him. Same with Neil Peart. Losing both of them was really hard to swallow.

      I saw him as many or more. Van Halen played many backyard parties in Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel and Pasadena where I grew up. I saw them play the Pasadena Civic Center to kick off their first album "Van Halen" tour back in 78 and he did this same Eruption solo. Poor Diamond Dave never realized it wasn't him that was the backbone of this band, it was always Eddie and Alex.

      Actually it was all of them at there best,all the way through 1984. Dave was best showman with primal scream that put band front and center, along with the greatest guitarist of all time. In my opinion what makes Eddie and Hendrix the 2 greatest ever is they were innovators. There are a lotof great guitarists however no one changed the way guitar was played until Hendrix came along and then Eddie took it to a whole new level. He literally changed the way guitar was played and he was the reason guitar tabs were created.

      I would have to respectfully disagree. Hendrix was good no doubt! But there were other guitarist's in Hendrix's era that were just as good if not better. Page, Campbell, Lee, just to name a few. When Eddie came along he blew the doors off of everything ever heard before. His playing and sound was like no other. No one was better than Eddie in his era. He was in a league of his own. Eddie also built his own guitars, hot rodded his own amps, and invented parts for the guitar. That's true innovation. Hendrix never did that.

    @marshall4me2 Před 2 lety +7

    Eddie Van Halen is a self taught guitar player who has never had a single lesson and can't read a note of music but had an incredible ear for music and on this night was so drunk that he can't remember anything about that night or that performance and he could still be that incredible of a guitar player . That is why he is considered the greatest guitarist that has ever picked up a guitar

There are a lot of greats and some of this stuff is subjective. However, for skill, innovation and contribution to music, he definitely belongs in at the very least, the top 3-5 no matter who your favorite is.

    I think it's an impossible question, who is the greatest guitar player. It's not like 6 guys running a 100 yard dash against a clock. It's subjective. What one person likes in a guitar playing style, another may not. I like Eddie for the rock thing, he was a great player and innovator. I almost like his rhythm playing better than his lead playing. *Harri* I HAVE to share this..... I grew up in Southern California in the 70's {as a teenager}.... I went to a party in Pasadena, CA once, which was about 25 min miles from my home. It was a huge party, several hundred, but Van Halen was playing.! Not to bore you but I was a touring musician during the early 80's, as a percussionist. Anyway, the girls all loved David but *MOTHER OF GOD* you knew, you KNEW there was something special about Eddie.! Even thru all the trips to the various kegs of beer we knew he was special.... I was very lucky in regards to a few bands. Another was seeing U2 at a free concert at my college in my freshman year. Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton, Cali... one of the great punk bands *X* played just before them.... I digress but Eddie was extra special and everyone knew it.... Just........ thought I would share a fans memory bro....... and no I didn't meet him. Too busy scoping out the opposite sex, lol...... God if we knew then, what we know now..... Take care now.... *David* .....

      @atticussampson776 Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for sharing David. I probably bumped into you at one of the kegs. I grew up in Culver City CA and had the good fortune of going to a cpl of backyard parties in Pasadena, saw them a handful of times at Gazzarri's on Sunset, then some concerts over the years with Dave and Sam. I feel incredibly fortunate. I also did some work on their mom's house after she passed away as they were getting it ready to put it up for sale. The house was empty pretty much, and I was alone doing my thing, then Alex dropped in and my heart skipped a few beats. Given the gravity of the situation with their mom just passing I couldn't be this immature fanboy, so I simply introduced myself, and I told him I was sorry for his loss. A very cool guy, and he gave me a couple of cassettes that were laying around (VH1 & 2). He left soon after that. It's unfortunate that people make really ignorant comments like Scott above, when they have zero clue what they're talking about. I cannot wrap my head around why people can be so ignorant. Maybe they want attention or they like to stir the pot and say controversial things for reasons unknown. But one thing is for certain, you can't fix stupid. Again, thank you for sharing your experience.

      @@atticussampson776 Most welcome bro.! You mentioned Gazzarri's..... I played there twice. On Sundays back in the day Bill had a theme called "Battle of the bands" one time, just as a dude hangin out, RATT participated in this Sunday thing... I remember it so vividly..! You'll remember on Sunset where it curves and goes slightly upward there was a billboard which for the LONGEST time was just acquire backdrop, blank.! I remember a week or so after they played the gig, that it said *Ratt and Roll* with the bands headshots... Then, literally, like a couple of weeks later they were booked on a European tour.... Shit like that is burned into my brain...!! In regards to Scott, with absent diplomacy, *F HIM* ! My feeling is Andy Warhol was off when he said *In the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes* More like 15 seconds with the advent of A.I. & social media me thinks..! FYI, I lived first in Whittier then went south on the 55 to Tustin later on. Nice to hear from someone who *ACTUALLY* shared that same experience..! Have a significant day bro... *David* .....

      @@johnnyb6067 It was a glorious time. No riots,no stampeding,the bands performed their whole set lists without getting pissed of and storming off stage or trying to incite riots. And you got your money's worth plus 3 or 4 encores. Bands didn't start blathering about what bothered them in the middle of a song. And in those days it was easy to sneak in "party favors" and nobody said shit about it other than "Hey man,can I hit that?" In those days we came home reeking of beer,weed, cigarettes and sweat and would talk for two weeks about how awesome the show was. To your question, I would like to point out an incredible guitarist, Yngwie Malmsteen. I somehow found him with the band "Rising Force", back in the day... I've been really enjoying the "reaction" videos to Van Halen and Eddie in particular. I saw them for the first time as a lead-in band for the Grateful Dead, 1980. I had no idea who they were. David Lee Roth got my attention. How to react to an acrobatic guy in tights and a superman cape running everywhere on stage singing his butt off? I got to the front of the stage, within 10 feet. Then I noticed Eddie doing things with a guitar I never imagined (I play guitar). He locked eyes with me and grinned. I will never forget it. The goat guitarist is subjective, of course, but he was a groundbreaker and participated in the musical score of my life.

    Eddie (ED)was most definitely the very best on the guitar. I have also seen and heard that even his guitar playing (with out tapping) is the very best. I have been playing for 50 years and I have heard many,many guitarists from the ventures, Dave Clark 5, Beatles, even the ones that Eddi was inspired by tapping. He has still taken this to the highest level. RIP Mr. Edward VanHalen.

    I saw Van Halen do 2 shows back to back nights in 1984 in ATL at the old Omni. They were amazing both nights. I was exhausted just watching them play. How Eddie could play the guitar like he did 2 nights in a row like he did boggles my mind.

    When I was 8 years old the album 1984 came out and there was a version of Eruption on it. This was the first piece of music I really HEARD. I'd listened to lots of music before of course, but it was all background noise to me. Not this. My sister played it on her record player, a very nice component system my dad gave her when he upgraded. When the song ended o told her to play it again. She looked at me funny, being ten years older than me, but did as I said. We listened to it again. And again. I listened to that record, but especially that track, until I wore it out. I vowed that day that I'd learn to play guitar and learn to make it sound like that and captivate people the way I was. It didn't come to be, but on my very short list of heroes, Eddie Van Halen sits squarely and securely. His music has brought a lifetime of joy, happiness, and many other emotions. Part of me died the day he passed. I love watching these reaction videos because it takes me back to that day in my sister's room, the day I first fell in love with music.

    I grew up in San Gabriel Ca next door to Pasadena and started seeing Van Halen playing around in high school. Originally called Mammoth. You're wondering how anyone can be so advanced and excellent playing guitar. Eddie started out playing piano, then drums, while his brother Alex played guitar. They discovered that they were both better playing each others instruments so they switched it up. Eddie became so good partly because of natural talent but primarily because he spent almost every available waking minute practicing, while he was designing and building his own guitars. The bastard Stratocaster you see him playing got the name Frankenstrat because of it. Eddie is considered by many, including myself, to be one of the very best, most talented, creative, and masterful guitarist there is.

    There is no one who could possibly convince me that there's any better name for the song than "Eruption." Eddie is positively *volcanic*
    Even though he'd long since gotten far beyond the point of wearing his fingers down to nubs (his calluses must have calluses on their calluses on top of calluses), I'd swear my own fingers bleed in sympathy for his.
    Most of Eddies' guitars (including the one you see in this video) were built by his own two hands & they must have gone to heaven with him...He certainly played the hell *out* of them.

    What you said is what all guitarists were saying when they heard EVH - he changed everything on the electric guitar. He didn't raise the bar he put the electric guitar in another Galaxy!! He had it all - chops, melody, timing, CREATIVITY, and on and on and on!!! On top of that, Van Halen had the best Rock Music Ever!!! It was weird how every song of Van Halen's is a BANGER! Greatest Guitarist, Greatest Front-Man, Best Back Ground Vocals (Thanks to Bassist Michael Anthony's high range from hell), and incredible drumming. Eddie is the GOAT. There are 3 types of notes on a guitar, Panatonics, Diatonics, and Van Halenonics, also called hammer on hammer off. He wasn't the first to do it, but he perfected it. Players like Jimmy and Stevie you can't really compare because it's such a different style. Those guys were equally great in their style. That's what makes them so great.

    Think of it this way, Eddie was a classical piano player and the fret board of his guitars were simply a different style of keyboard and he was a master of it and over the years he experimented with what sounds he could get out of them, many of his guitars he built

    The first electric guitar player of note was Charlie Christian. Even today guitarists argue about how he played certain pieces. Jimi Hendrix represents the first guitar player whose music transcended the guitar and Hendrix simply used a guitar to create what he heard in his head. Ed Van Halen used his knowledge of music and endless tinkering with what he could do with a guitar to create a whole new form of playing. Could either of the others existed if one of them hadn't "Shown the way?"
