  • The most visited cemetery in the world Père Lachaise Cemetery (Cimetière du Père-Lachaise) is the largest cemetery in the city of Paris.
    Père Lachaise Cemetery was opened on 21 May 1804. Napoleon, who had been proclaimed Emperor by the Senate three days earlier, had declared during the Consulate that “Every citizen has the right to be buried regardless of race or religion”.
    Presently there are more than 1 million bodies buried there, and many more in the columbarium, which holds the remains of those who had requested cremation.
    The rules to be buried in a Paris cemetery are rather strict: people may be buried in one of these cemeteries if they die in the French capital city or if they lived there.

    I was there in 1995. I hitchhiked there from Ramstein Germany with my girlfriend. No gate then at Morrisons grave. This was a beautiful cemetery and I wish I could visit it again. The only thing that bothered me, was all the graffiti. And some vandalism which I am sure that is why they gated off Morrison's grave. It's a damn shame the people cannot respect such a beautiful place.

      My cousin went back in 92 I think it was and found junkies nodded out on his grave with their arms still tied off and needles laying on the grave..and yes graffiti. He tool a picture and showed me when I was very young and I couldn't understand why ppl were napping in a cemetery and the thought horrified me.

    I was there in 1983 to see Jim Morrison's grave... It looked much different then... The bust of Morrison was on top of the headstone and no fence around...
    Beautiful cemetery

    How strange are the rich to spend a fortune on housing decaying Earthly remains when it is the soul which is immortal and lives on forever in our minds! Rest in peace, all who are buried in this magnificent cemetery.

      It is an expensive cemetery to keep your remains and therefore is one for the rich only it seems. However, I don't think they would ever remove the famous graves. Thanks for watching and for your comments.:)

    I visited Père Lachaise Cemetery in 2004 shortly after the Olympics in Athens, Greece. A dream came true for me, to pay tribute to Jim's grave. I went to several graves and the ones you have in your video. I am impressed by the plexiglass or the glass around the tomb of Oscar Wilde. It was not like that then. What year was the video taken? By the way, you have done a very nice job. Well done..

    • @joejourneys
      @joejourneys  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you so much for your comments and observation, this was filmed in 2018 and at this time there was plexiglass around the tomb of Oscar Wilde, just two years earlier it was possible to physically touch the tomb. I imagine it was difficult to keep people from kissing it with lipstick covered lips. Many stories in this cemetery, look forward to return one day.

      Well outside of Paris ? It’s…. Literally in Paris 😭 even though it’s not in the center of Paris, the 20th is one of Paris most beautiful district, and it is especially rich regarding the leftist revolutionary and resistant history it carries, I highly recommend travelers taking a walk in it and getting lost

    Wilde's gravesite is maintained by the Irish government - They evidently got fed up with people defacing it with graffiti so they cleaned it up and put that plexiglass round it to protect it. it's kind of Ironic that they treat him better in death than they did in life. Such were the times I guess.
