  • One computer failure and a new PC later, we're back with Japan's favorite TCG you've never heard of! From its origins in the tabletop RPGs of the late 80s and early 90s to its gradual demise, we chart the life and death of Mon Colle.
    (Note: These two Monster Collection videos were originally recorded in October 2019, but postproduction was delayed four months for life reasons.)

    I'm an avid Fire Emblem TCG player (and TCG player in general) and the amount of influence that this game had on FE is staggering. The board layout, victory from entering your opponent's "deployment space", land card placement, equipment... it all came from here. FE even has a card called "地形変更" (Terrain Modification) that functions the exact same as Change Field. Major props to Mon Colle for being such a pioneer of the trading card genre. I highly doubt many of my favourite games would even exist were it not for this game's ambitious mechanics, both the good and less well-thought.
    Amazing video as always, I recently found your content and its been so enlightening to learn the "why" behind so many of my favourite card games.

    So, do you only have one party of monsters moving about the field? Just imagining if, rather than moving a set of multiple cards around the field, the cards could be placed outside of the grid, and some kind of figurine or marker could indicate where on the grid your party is. It just looks kind of cluttered as it is.

      It's a long story, but I worked as an independent journalist while I was studying Japanese in undergrad, acquired a working knowledge of the business from contact with store managers and wholesalers while covering Cardfight!! Vanguard, hung around in Japanese-speaking circles online, and started doing formal studies of TCGs for my master's thesis in graduate school. For that I looked to Japanese-language academic work on media franchises, old print publications like 90s issues of Coro Coro/V Jump and developer interviews in more recent books as primary sources, and Japanese blogs retained by the Internet Archive. (The old web is sometimes easier to research than the new web, because you can use webrings to locate everything.) There are some JPN sites like "Juggernauts' TCG Catalog" that try to compile basic historical facts and data, which made things a little bit easier. Over time the pieces started coming together, and I was able to start putting together an actual history.

    Otherwise this was an extremely interesting video. And honestly I had always wondered what the heck the anime "mon colle knights" was for given we obviously never got this game in america but the dubbed anime always acted like there was a TCG that its universe was based off of.

    Sorry what? You need patents to make card games too? So even if after you’ve made a card game, built all the hype, hosted all the tournaments, you could get sued if an unrelated party files a patent based on your mechanics? Is that correct?

    • @lost-worlds
      @lost-worlds  Před 3 lety +4

      You don't "need" a patent for a TCG, but you can (potentially) use one to prevent other companies from stealing your ideas. Patents only protect the creator of a new invention, for a set time period. If you were sued based on a patent filed by someone else *after* you released your product, they would lose their own lawsuit and their patent would be revoked--because your release date being before their patent was filed proves 1.) that their invention isn't new, and 2.) they didn't invent it. It would be unlikely that they would be granted the patent in the first place though, as the patent office would probably notice that their invention already exists. Most TCGs have no patents involved with them, although trademarks and copyright are still used to prevent plagiarism. MTG is the exception, in part because it predates almost every other TCG. (Its patent is expired now though.)

    • @pinkdelicious655
      @pinkdelicious655 Před 2 lety +1

      Yep. I'd add upon this that besides most countries aren't as rigorous as America in patents, wotc despite their efforts (they've always been bastards), could only enforce tap symbol. Not even the word or how it's used.

    • @fernandobanda5734
      @fernandobanda5734 Před 2 lety

      Actually most game mechanics are pretty much immune to copyright and patents. If you copy a lot of specific stuff, you could get into trouble. But otherwise, broad mechanics are not an issue.

      @lost-worlds  Před 2 lety +3

      It wasn't completely terrible like the NGE card game, but it was very mediocre. The biggest issue is that it just wasn't very fun to play, and was more of a collectible than an actual game, especially in the early sets. It also had a lot of reused stock art even on chase cards (similar problem with the current Final Fantasy TCG) and as with many licensed TCGs there wasn't much support for tournament play or locals.
