  • On November 16, 2019 we went out to Palestine, TX for the second weekend in a row, but this time it was for the Texas State Railroad Polar Express. Last weekend in Palestine we seen the Union Pacific Big Boy #4014, this weekend we seen Texas State Railroad 2-8-2 Mikado #30 and FP9A #125 pulling the Polar Express train in each direction.
#30 was built in 1917 by Baldwin Locomotive Works, it worked for short Louisiana line called the Tremont & Gulf Railway from after WWI to the 1950s. It was sold to the Magma Arizona Railroad and was renumbered to #7, and it worked there from 1954 to 1967. In 1962 it starred in a film called “How the West Was Won.” It came to the Texas State Railroad in 1974 and was restored to operation in 1978 and was renumbered to #400. It was out of service in the early 2000s but returned in 2014 with it's Magma Arizona #7 Livery. In 2017 it was brought back to it's Tremont and Gulf #30 Livery.
#125 was built in 1957 by the Electro-Motive Division for the Canadian National Railway, originally numbered #6521. 125 was restored in 2018 and was painted in the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad’s most famous passenger train, “The Texas Special” and normally pulls trains along the line when steam is not operational.
We were also able to meet actor Eddie Deezen, his most popular role was the Know It All Kid from Polar Express (2004), and also was in other popular movies like Grease (1978).
We had fun in the last two weekends in East Texas seeing two different steam locomotives in the same area. Enjoy the magical ride through the piney woods of East Texas on board the Polar Express. We hope y'all enjoy.

That whistle sounds exactly like the one that TVRM 610 wore.

The whistle on #30 is a Hancock Long Bell 3-Chime from the Northern Pacific Railroad. TVRM #610 wore a Virginia & Southwestern 3-Chime which is practically a Southern PS-4 or Hancock Long Bell 3 Chime whistle because they sound similar. Southern Railway #630 wore the Virginia & Southwestern 3-Chime in 2012 for the NS Steam Program.

Still surprised TSR is gonna be doing this event this year despite covid. Although I'm still questioning of 30 will be used for all the runs like how its been for years. Sorta since 28 and a few of the other steamers have probably gotten the chance as well.
