- “You won, this time. But you are as big as you are ever going to get. And I’m still growing.” - Sir Edmund Hillary
On April 21st 2021, I fell face first into bed caked in mud, sweat, tears, and even blood. I had just spent the last 48 hours getting licked by the Art Loeb. It was one of the hardest things I’d ever done. Sometime later, I decided I would give it another try. I wanted a do-over. But before I could, I had to be the kind of person that would appreciate this trail for the arduous but incredibly worthwhile journey that it was. I needed to grow…

Please check out the guide I put together from this trip! It helps me to keep doing what I do. Detailed mileage & elevation profiles, a list of planning resources, shuttle and logistics recommendations, and three possible itinerary options all in one neatly organized PDF. (While it isn’t a substitute for doing your own research and preparation, hopefully it will take the guess work out of planning your own trip.)

people underestimate how much courage it takes for someone to get out of their comfort zone and do something truly difficult (and do it alone). And after getting their but kicked, to get up and try again. excellent video and great comeback.
I'm flattered, truly. 😊 Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!
Kicking leaves is so much fun
It is! So satisfying 😌 🍂
Nice touch w/ the 3rd person shots! Especially at 24:28
Another wonderful video. Glad to hear they are replacing the shelters. Art Loeb definitely kicks butts, especially Pilot Mountain; but it is an amazing trail!
Thank you so much 😊 I'm very interested to see what the final project looks like.
Agreed! It's a butt kicker, but so worth it.
Great video! Thanks for sharing. You did alot of great commentary and are a good story teller. My wide and I will be doing this hike for the first time in May. I LOVED the one piece of the video when you had your video inside your food storage container, great creative clip.
Thank you. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. May is a beautiful time to hit the Art Loeb! Y'all are in for a treat with all the wildflowers along the trail in Spring. Wishing y'all a fun adventure 🙏🏕
Your videos have such a special feel to them. They are so enjoyable to watch. Your music choices, your filming, and your narration is so good. Your earlier video of the Art Loeb Trail made me never to want to hike it. Now I'd like to get out there and give it a try some day.
Thank you! I try to put my all into these videos. It makes so happy to hear that. 😊
Oh no! 😅 Please don't let my Nobo trip convince you not to hike it. Attitude is everything on this trail. If you go into it with a positive one, you'll have a much better experience.
As a cyclist and bikepacker... it's nice to slow down sometimes. Thanks for sharing friend
Great job Seagrass! and no pack slam this time well done !
Haha. So glad you liked the video 😆
We're going to be doing that hike in 2 weeks! We're going to camp on Black Balsam Knob, then head down to Davidson Campground.
Sounds like a good plan! Wishing you a fun time. I'd love to know how it goes for y'all 😊
After watching your northbound video it inspired me to complete my own southbound trip March 7-9, 2023. Thank you so much for what you do.
I'm so happy to hear that 😄 How was it?! Favorite part of the trail? How was the weather?
@@SeagrasstoSassafras The overall trip was wonderful. The cedar forest between Black Balsam Rd and BRP was very interesting. I really loved that section. Camped first night before Black Balsam Knob and woke up to amazing sunrise. Water was scarce between Shining Rock and Deep Gap. Deep Gap shelter was gone but there is a brand new shelter at Butter Gap with a piped water source. Weather was great for the trip lows in upper 20's to mid 50's in the day.
I'm glad you had a great trip! Ivestor to BBK has some of the best camping along the trail.
Thanks for the update with the shelters. 😲 Sounds like they're moving fast on the project. Deep Gap might be finished in time for Summer 🤞
Great edit and wonderful video, as always.
Thank you very much 😊
Another wonderful video! I completed this trail just 4 days after you did! 😊 Doing it in 2 days was ROUGH! But the group I was with wanted to push through the pain for the challenge. I wish I had done like you, and done it in 3. Oh well, there is always a next time!
Thank you 😊 No way! October is such a beautiful time of year for it. I'm sorry to hear that. Hiking it over 3 days is much easier. You should definitely take it at a more leisurely pace next time 🐌⛰️
Another great video, as always! Thanks for sharing with us once again.
So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching 😁
@@SeagrasstoSassafras of course 😁. The snow is melting out here and temps are mid 60s to low 70s. Hoping to get to the Porcupine Mountains over on the UP in Michigan this weekend. Short drive from where I’m on assignment in wisconsin at
That's great! Glad to hear the Midwestern states are getting some warmer weather. I hope you're able to get out there. Am I right in thinking the Porcupines skirt part of The Great Lakes?
@@SeagrasstoSassafras Lake Superior 😁
Well done video, congrats on 1k!
Thank you so much 😊
Fantastic Video. One of my favorite trails and this is now one of my favorite videos on the ALT. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! 😊 The ALT is such a unique and beautiful trail.
This was such a great video! The production was excellent, the scenery beautiful and the message inspirational. You are very gifted! Thanks for sharing.
I appreciate the many compliments. Truly! This trip meant a lot to me, so I tried to pour my all into the video. Thank you so much for watching 😁
Great video! Almost (and I repeat "almost" Ha!) makes me want to hike the ALT again. 🙂
Haha! Almost 😉
What a presentation, what a solo adventure my friend. Your narration is phenomenal! Love it 🔥🔥
Thank you! The secret is recording in a blanket fort 😆
Great work as always with the hiking, filming and editing - love to see the growth! Can’t beat those Spruce-Fir forests. I know you’ve conquered the Art Loeb a couple times now, it’s time to branch out West 🤠
Haha 😆 I was telling my husband the other day I want to hike the Rim to Rim for my 30th. Either that or go back to Jed Smith Wilderness. We'll see what the future holds.
This is so inspiring!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching 😊
Great video, thanks.
Thank you for watching! 😁
The art lobe was my first thru hike! I proposed to my wife on shining rock!
Aww! I love that. You picked an incredible place 💕
I love the video work and the shots you made. Your very creative shooting style. Where did you get the music at for your video?
Thank you very much! 😊 Majority of the music for this video came from Upbeat (song links in the description) Some of it is from Free Music Archive as well.
I have watched a lot of Art Loeb hikes, I think it's one of my future destinations. Your beautiful filming, edits, and voiceover makes it so beautiful! I'm glad you had such nice weather. Curious, is it better going North or Sobo? Thanks for the gorgeous adventure!
It's a truly incredible trail! If hiking it is something you want to do, you should go for it. As for Nobo or Sobo, it really depends. Going North, you work up in elevation, but it means ending on the best views. Going South, you work your way down to the river, but the initial climb from Daniel Boone is very steep.
@@SeagrasstoSassafras thanks for the tips 🙂
Happy to help!
I'm currently working on a blog post and video with advice for this trail. Hoping to have that posted soon 🤞
Congratulations. Have you hiked profile trail and how does art lobe compare?
Thank you! Profile Trail at Grandfather Mountain?
Are those Xero shoes you're wearing?
They're VivoBarefoot (Primus Trail FG model)
Where was your campsite the first night? Distance from the start?
Check out my trail journal. There's a section "First Camp" with more info.
