  • I take a walk to the "touristy" part of Diego Suarez. In the area of Rue Colbert, which features numerous hotels, cafes, bars & restaurants.

I was living in Diego from 1980 to 1985, then my parents returned to Europe.
I never returned to Diego since then, don't know why.
The way you walked was 50% of my way to school for almost 4 years.
Thank you for bringing back the memories

No wonder you'd stayed for weeks, the town do look clean & pleasant.

Yes, "pleasant" is a good way to describe it. Kind of slow-paced, not too big or small. After a week or 2 you get to know some of the locals who are quite friendly.

Quel changement depuis 1988. Mais je vois que le nouvel hôtel existe toujours.

No never in Madagascar or Africa, I remember years ago getting food poisoning in the Philippines, I was in agony for a couple of days.

I did in Tamatave/Toamasina, once. Be sure to have a vaccination against typhoid fever (3 consecutive pills to be taken before departure). A simple delicious salad whose ingredients were washed with tap water can make you ache - but it always depends on the very person. ;-)

I had it each time that I went to Madagascar ! Terrible sh*t even., mostly in Tana. Have you seen the food markets, and you know why. Try to stick to fish food, French fries (or sweet potatoes) and salads along the coast: at least it's fresh & there are few flies only on the market. The worst I had was after eating Snake soup in the best Chinese restaurant in Tana: I guess it was picked up along a road after 5 days in the sunshine. Restaurants are not safe, they also buy their meats on the food markets.

Is it close to Nosy Be? I think it's a difficult journey.

It was a tough bus ride. The road from Ambilobe to Diego is not good..although they seem to be repaving it. If you want to go there take a plane even if it's expensive. It's not close to Nosy Be..but both are in the Northern part of Madagascar.

Always take the pills beforehand, for security. But attention: The pills (Malarone) are very expensive in Madagascar.

@@haak737 This medication doesn't have the reputation of side effects; I had none. The cure is the same substance, just taken after noticing symptoms. The info is from the top tropical medicine institute of Germany. I'm not a physician.
