I was at the spot yesterday. Had a crew of 8 on the center console. We had over 40 fish total, many keepers. Everyone had a blast and the kids were thrilled! After seeing this video on Saturday I had a feeling it was gonna be a good trip. Thanks John.
Nice spot hint... also love the grin on your face as you reel up the first fish knowing it's a keeper the whole time.

Hey john i’ve been fishing the great south Bay for 30 plus years never seen a Day like that just epic way to go !!! 👏🔥
Weekend fishing is the absolute worst! I’m an educator, so I’m grateful to have off summers at this point in my career (20 years). I fish Monday-Thursday in summers 😂😂. In Fall; I’m well in my glory when everyone else packs it in. Mostly
The fishing this year is extraordinary. 6-10 pound slabs coming out of moriches daily, on the Rosie --and it's almost August.
Glad you are safe! Great fishing! You are always appreciated, thanks for the video
I've had a great year as well fishing from this spot, mostly from the docks! Congrats!
Epic day John! I’ve been kayak fishing the south shore bay but in Nassau and a ton of shorts.
John, just an amazing trip! Awesome!
You’re one tough, hardcore fisherman. God Bless.
Wow Oh boy oh boy. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
So good
I agree. Kayaks are on the boaters turf. I didn’t get it when I first started, I do now with some time. I appreciate the boaters who slow for me but also the boaters that let me know when I’m a little to close with a wake or a finger. I’m more careful to stay out of there way.
I bought my Oldtown 120 pdl with stability in mind. I’ve taken some good size wakes so far in the bays and it’s handled them well. I’ve gone from a 21’ center console to a kayak full time so I’ve been on both sides of the fence .
You have the Midas fluke touch my friend. Great trip
Congratulations that is up there as a lifetime trip minus the boat traffic
You earned them! Nice work
Skinner for President! .....he's so good he could open the toilet bowl, drop a line and catch a fluke! Skinner Nation!
I'm way too young apparently!
Nice looking fish and many of them from a Kayak, good going.
He John.
Remember me you halk Todd Katie and lang on halks boat.
You had 14 keeps that day as well. July 4th infamous bathing suit trip. 😂
Keep it going. You killing it.
Yep! This trip tied it. That was a great bite we had that day. This season is a lot tougher out there so far!
Very nice catches! What a day
Really like that camera view, and really appreciate your suggesting me not to go out there in my outback, ( even though I hardly use it ) I can see why. I find kayakers hard to see from a boat, my Mom lives in lakes region NH, any there’s often accidents with kayakers and boaters, when I do use it I wear a long sleeve shirt in blaze hunter orange. Incredible action there, it’s tempting, maybe I’ll take my boat down to Captree and concentrate on shallower water in the GSB. Sorry for the long comment, great video, thanks.
great video. i almost exclusively kayak fish very early mornings - do not have luxury of midweek. unless i troll for stipers i use scotty outriggers on sides. they effectively decrease chance of flipping (they don't even touch water if kayak is neutral/balanced). once crowd wakes up - i get out. local bays (esp jamaica>raritan>shinnecock) are busy and people are not always safe...i stay away from shipping / main channel... but still. it is easier to adjust with my hobie for waves (also faster). with my ocean kayak (same as yours old) i keep paddle on my lap most of the time.
Similar fishing that I had back in the early 60's out of Captree. Boated a 10 1/2 lb doormat and there were no limits back then.
Legend!! How I describe you, how you should be known!! Appreciate the footage:)
I did a kayak trip many years ago up at Cape Cod until Great Whites starting showing up.
I wouldn't be comfortable kayaking around great whites.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing it was extremely nerve-racking especially with all the seals swimming about. I eventually gave it up and stuck with Bass fishing the Sudbury River.
Awesome fishing trip!
Great video Mr skinner I can't fish that water in my kayak. I would have flipped with some of them rollers .they are some really nice-looking fluke still biting. I caught one this week, and it didn't have a tail it must have happened when it was small it was around 4 pounds. I had to let him go. I'm sure the next guy will take him .
Kayakers are hard to see during the day when in a boat and nearly impossible to see at Night! The extra large flag should be mandatory when mixing it up with boats and lights too! I almost ran a Kayaker over at night time in the LI sound! He was out towards main channel in dark colored kayak! That was enough to convince me to install a flir camera! Stay safe folks
Never mind my question. I hadn't gotten far enough in to hear you talk about it.
Hey John I’m looking for a new conventional reel. Anything a little more affordable like the maxel hybrid with the thumb bar free spool?
Hey John good seeing you out there in my "home bay" and I'm glad you got your PB record on it. Thank you for not being greedy and releasing all of those fish. I'm not sure if it was this day but the day we saw you out there where my wife had that 25 inch fluke she landed at the bottom of that drift near the Apex buoy where it gets dicey for sure. I had clicked it in gear to go to the top of the drift and she pulled it up. Plenty of huskys, even the shorts were fighting hard. We had 3 keeps between us 20, 23 and 25. Nuclear chicken 4-in. I wanted to ask you about the rig I normally fish your exact setup with the Bucktail however lots of seaweed on the bottom Bucktail so I switched to the chicken rig and let the Sinker take the seaweed in that bay on outgoing... all of the Keepers were on the incoming, bumping the throttle to stay over strike zone with tide 1.2 mph ..as I said I don't have a trolling motor. Thanks for all your advice and for producing such great rods... tight lines...
This trip was the day before I saw you. I'm using only a 3/4-ounce bucktail and having almost no issues with weed. Most of my keepers have been on the bucktail there.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing ok thanks. maybe my bucktail is too heavy. 1 1/2 swing hook. Jig bounce w accurist , 15 lb braid..off the boat.. 2 trips was shorts hitting teaser..no bigs on bucktail..
Yes - 1.5-ounce is way too heavy for there. The trip before this one I had 6/6 keepers on the bucktail.
Okay John well I just got back from that spot Today incoming.. with the 3/4 Oz Bucktail and limited out including a 29 inch 9 1/2 lb fluke! with a killer hookset, was 8 ft water slack high bump troll bottom of drift... My PB thank you so much. My nephew netted it I cannot believe this fluke in the Bay, you are the man!
Awesome! Congrats!
Good video and fishing as always, John!
It's almost a paradox how boats traveling at high speed leave a small wake, but the same hull at just under planing speed puts out a tsunami, right?!
It makes sense because there's less boat in the water at high speed. The low speed plowing displaces a lot of water, making larger waves.
I was stupid night fishing in a kayak once and flipped in some waves near 100 yards off the beach haven't been back in one since. Terrifying, couldn't get back in.
A couple weeks ago, in south Jersey, flounder fishing started to get good. Then croakers invaded the bays. Its nearly impossible to fish. Consider yourself lucky that you dont have to deal with them.
No doubt that if you can handle that boat wake you can handle most anything in FL less than a hurricane.
Always out on the charter boats over there, is it viable to fish there with a kayak without peddle drive or a trolling motor ? Thanks ! Saw you out over there this weekend I was like holy sh&* that was Skinner ! Tight lines man
Personally I would only do this in one of the better Old Towns or Hobies, definitely pedal or motor drive. I'd never do this paddling, and I used to fish the Shinnecock Reef with a 15-ft paddle yak.
John, is that a freshwater trolling motor? i have a powerdrive. How long have been using it in saltwater? No issues?
It's a saltwater Minn Kota that comes with the kayak. No issues.
Awesome trip. You truly just never know when youll get on them. But i dont think you ever expect a trip quite as good as that. What color gulp were you using just curious.
White and nuclear chicken.
my plan for next kayak has been an old town pedal drive. You just sold me...at the 15 min mark
Which one? I have experience with a couple of them.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing well, I may have to go with 10fter as I car top. Not sure I want to wrestle the 12 footer and I honestly don't need to space and I'm not a big guy.
OK. I'm not familiar with the 10. Just the 120 and ePDL.
Great video! Is there gonna be a new line of John skinner fluke bucktails in the future?
Yes, through Dark Matter.
John, great fishing day! What tide do you find the best bite? My dad would fish two hours before high tide, have lunch and a beer at slack and then fish for two hours after high tide. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks
That's actually not a bad approach, minus the beer.
Thanks John, you are right about the beer! Times have changed
I agree with speed up, but those going slow are the few that know they're responsible for their wake.
And they're considerate human beings. I always give them a nod of thanks. I just feel bad that I interrupt them.
Hey @johnskinner I was trying to click on the link for you humming bird that you use but it’s not working what’s the exact model your useing and you use the same one on your other boat??
This one on the yak: amzn.to/3WmNlcJ On the boat I have the 10-inch with side scan.
So, I know exactly where you're fishing, and I wonder how you fare in the kayak with all the channel traffic, nearby. It must be kinda scary.
Epic video, John. Recent experience (7/22/24, LI Sound, just east of Eaton's Neck OB) has shown me (in my 17' 2" CC) that people can also be VICIOUS and mean-spirited with their million-dollar large-displacement boats. Apparently mistaken for someone "undesirable" to a well-heeled captain, I was expressly targeted for a "lesson" with a close-in pass by a 36 - 40 foot sport fishing boat whose wake would almost certainly have capsized even MY boat (wake twice height of my freeboard) had I not emergently reeled in, started the motor and swung my bow into it JUST in time. Had I been anchored, I'd have sunk. Situational awareness is PARAMOUNT out on the water. Looking for witnesses through Facebook forums to identify "captain" as the James Joseph (packed!) was ~300 yards away. Literally attempted murder by some bigot.
I felt the same on my 13' Boston Whaler. Not sure why some people do not have some courtesy to either slow down or deviate their course slightly. Huge vessel with Quad outboards blew by me and threw a wake that was probably 6' high. This was off Lloyds Neck on Saturday.
John the flounder pounder.....
Skinners a fucking legend
Do you have to sort thru Sea Robins?
At most 4 on this trip.
My question is, what’s that 30+ foot sportfish doing drifting a back bay channel for fluke in 8-10’ of water?!
I know him. He's a phenomenal fisherman inshore and out. His current fluke options are a 70-mile round-trip for an ocean grind at Montauk where limits have been a challenge, or putter 1.5 miles in the bay to where he's been limiting pretty quickly most days with fish to 7 pounds.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I’m sure he is! Just always puzzles me why guys with boats like that are fluke fishing when they could be bloody-ing the deck with tuna. Guess it makes sense for a change of pace sometimes.
Hey John, your fishing net . What type is it?
amzn.to/3WwO5x6
Thanks 😊
Hey John, maybe you’re gonna laugh at me or put some mirrors on the goddamn boat just like a tractor trailer you can put them in the ride holders by the way, John I’m sorry I didn’t buy that Roger using right now. That thing looks beautiful. Matter fact I will end up getting one.
19" min. and 3 a day limit helps make these days possible.
106 MK is much easier to steer throught the wakes with the throttle/ foot rudder steering
Hey John, what bucktails are you using now? Thanks
My existing yet dwindling stock of skinner bucktails. Hope to have more soon.
Question for anyone: do you crush your barbs?
Depends on the hook. These are Gamakatsu hooks with pretty small barbs, so I don't crush.
Fished from that yak for 5 hours on Friday afternoon and caught 5 flounder, biggest was 16”. 😢😢
I would think on a weekend you would take your boat. I dont know the launch's in that area but better on the weekend with all the yahoos out there.
The kayak is much more convenient for me for this location.
What’s your pb flounder?
How do you decide when to take out the kayak vs the boat?
This is more convenient for me to kayak. Else long boat ride. Plus I like kayak fishing.
@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks for the insight. I've been watching your videos, so naturally, now I'm on the fence between a Klamath and an Old Town 😆
I know the spot well, no questioning your ability as a fisherman although I'm not sure a kayak belongs there on a busy day like that, I know I'll get some pushback on this that everybody is responsible for their own wake , but I would say the majority of kayak fishermen don't have the best kayak or your knowledge of how to keep from getting in trouble and rolling.
I did make it clear that you shouldn't be in there with just any kayak and you need to be very aware of what's going on and avoid the area where the waves stack.
Please talk about the lures you're using?
As mentioned in the narration - 3/4-ounce bucktail. Those are 4-inch Gulp grubs.
And there are links to all of the tackle in the video description.
What Kill bag is that?
Canyon. Not sure on size - amzn.to/3xY5VQm
When I kayak fluke, I bleed them on a stringer, just an idea.
Link for reel does not work.
Thanks. Fixed. bit.ly/2RYSXw9
New York has all njs fluke. The fluke bite is horrible here
You have a boat why did you decide to use your kayak… I have a boat but think about getting a kayak but more for shallow water or launching from the beach. We are in a drought so lakes are at all time low in south/central Texas most boats ramps are closed
Easier access to this location for me by kayak.
Hey John, maybe you’re gonna laugh at me or put some mirrors on the goddamn boat just like a tractor trailer you can put them in the ride holders
Why take out the Tupperware boat when you have a actual boat. 😂
More convenient. Would have been a long boat ride or trailering through traffic.
I think you are also looking for other anglers who might be watching you! Just saying.
