When I was a little girl and my childhood was falling apart by my dad's heartless infidelity my mom devoted this song to me. I was so lost and trying to take care of my crushed mother at only 11 years old. I've been a caretaker of others my entire life. This song reminds me I can handle things.
I feel your heart. My mom, the love of my dad's life and my everything, took her life when I was 13. It devastated my dad to pieces. For some reason, the mighty spirit graced me with the strength, at 13, to look after my dad. Although, my dad's spirit was never the same, he gave everything he had to provide my sister and I a stable life. Like you, everyone's wellness is my priority. There's not a day that goes by that I don't wish my mom was here. But at the same time I feel so blessed for the life I have lived and the person I've become because of my circumstances. Like you, I feel I can handle anything life throws at me. Music is an amazing healer. May you always be blessed♥

Foster couldn't get that song recorded, got rejected everywhere until they had Donny do the demo and it immediately became a huge hit.
I didn't realize that Skylark was a one hit wonder band.. Donny has a beautiful voice, I figured they had to have hit something else- but they didn't.
He also did backup vocals for Mavis Staples. That's one heck of a talent

BLAKE NAILED IT! I REALY LOVE HIS VERSION...BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL.
This is a great song- whether its rendered in the original 70s crossover or Country version. All of the naysayers for Blake's rendition have been poisoned by previously hearing (and loving) the original Skylark cut. Country music enthusiasts hearing Shelton singing it for the first time are probably marvelling at it. I've heard both - the first while growing up in the 70s in Canada, and now this one on CZcams. Both are brilliant because the Song is awesome. David Foster is a genius. Thanks for uploading this.

He did a good job with this song. BUT in my opinion it pales in comparison to the New Birth and O'Jays version. But a different classification and interpretation of this gorgeous and timeless song.

David Foster did NOT write this song.
Victoria Canada police officer Dave Richardson went to pick up his nurse girlfriend at her place and found her crying as she had two elderly patients had passed away on her shift. She went to shower and change and Dave watched some TV while waiting for her. After a while Dave went to check on her and found her asleep on her bed. He decided she needed the escape of sleep and went home and was inspired to write this poem about her. He was a friend of David Foster who was in a band with his then wife BJ Cook. Foster took the poem to his bandmates and guitarist Doug Edwards put the poem to music and the rest as they say is history.
Lead singer Donny Gerard went on to sing back-up vocals for Cher, Elton John, and many other legends although I think he had the chops to be a huge star himself.

It is NOT David Foster's song. The lyrics are from a poem written by Canadian police officer Dave Richardson and the music is by Doug Edwards who was the guitarist for the band Skylark which David Foster was in.
David Foster is a musical genius and he knows talent. Blake does a wonderful rendition of this song...he was born to sing country music. Love this!

He didn't write either the music or the lyrics for this song. I imagine he worked on the arrangement. Why does he never give credit to the policeman who wrote the lyrics and the other Skylark member who wrote the music? Baffles me because David Foster is so successful, why does he make it seem like he wrote this?
