The lyrics are so representative of the Viking age. The Vikings had to swallow any feelings of compassion to survive. The reason why they raided was because the place they lived in was a frozen wasteland. They couldn’t make a whole lot so they had to steal and kill just to survive.
research says otherwise. southern Scandinavia is warm enough for agriculture. huge forests, wide access to sea trade, iron deposits and advanced metallurgy.
and think this through, if they had enough wealth to send young men with weapon, armor, supplies and on SHIPS every year for several centuries, how can they be economically depressive? vikings raids actually require a formidable wealth.

Fun fact: Vikings were not different from Greeks, Persians, Romans or any other civilization.
Every civilization known to mankind has brutally killed inncents, childrens and raped women.
The problem here is that Pop Culture depicted them that way (Violent brutes who knew and loved nothing but killing and fighting) to antagonize them for basically two reasons:
1 They were not christians (at least most of them at the time)
2 They invaded what would be one of the greatest empires on history later on (The British Empire)
It's not really hard to manipulate stereotypes when you are one of the greatest empires at some point.
Er no, that is not true. The raids did not have anything to do with Scandinavia being a horrible place to live. In fact until the little Ice Age, which happened later, Scandinavia was doing pretty well. But farming doesn't earn much silver. Later, I believe, there were raiders and scandinavian explorers who were motivated to find new lands to settle. It's worth noting that Scandinavia was not a world leader in terms of science or economic power in the late medieval period and renaissance. I think they mostly kept to themselves after the Viking Age was over, and in the silence, other tales about them grew.

I knew this song was sad, having watched the series....I could tell the song was Thorfinn writhing in agony and rage ....but after hearing it in English.... this is a really sad song to reflect a truly harsh life.
