    honest to god, been using unity on my desktop for years and holy shit i can't wait to switch to a laptop. seeing the same workspace every day, sitting in the same chair for hours, not being able to work on my game outside of home really hits you in the face. would love to sit outside on a nice sunny day and still get work done. just a few more days and I get my asus tuf a17

    I personally do most of my work on the desktop. The power and multiple displays just makes it so much better. When I decide to go out and work on the laptop , I tend to use that time to work on the actual code rather than the graphic elements. Visual studio is considerably less resource intensive (obviously) than Unity.
    I can run Unity well enough to test any changes , to make sure it didn't break anything.
    Unfortunately it seems that the pace at which laptop performance steps up , is out paced by software developers adding features, or being less concerned with limiting resources needed to run their programs.
    Hell Im pretty sure the IBM thinkpad I used in college (seems like 100 years ago), ran stuff better than the laptop I have now which is significantly more powerful.

    I have a day job and try to do game dev on my desktop, but because I get a lot of work in on my lunch break and just before going to sleep on my laptop.
    If you have this setup, the laptop just needs graphics around the min spec for your game. A lot of game dev doesn't involve playing the game, instead coding and messing with prefabs and scenes, etc. Just save the work that needs the high end graphics for when you are on your desktop. YMMV

    Depends what your build target is. If it is Android, or mobile VR, you actually don't need such a beefy laptop. I develop exclusively on a laptop that cost me EUR 950 (Lenovo Legion Y720) and am quite happy with it. What its weak point is, is not noise, but battery. I am considering buying a low power laptop with integrated graphics (but with SSD and at least 8 GB of ram) for light touch up work or c# coding on the go.

    I needed a new laptop about a year ago to support my game design and development. So after digging around online on what I should get, I decided on a Surface Book and picked it up for around $700 off of eBay...
    And I can confirm that it is probably the best purchase I've ever made in my life. My life wouldn't be the same without it, especially with its touch screen and pen capabilities. It is so heavenly. The only thing that really bothers me about it is that I wish I got a bit more space on my hard drive!
    There's also a battery drain issue with gaming but apparently there's workarounds that you can find on Reddit and such.
    My desktop has since mostly turned into a gaming rig now that I do all my music and game work on the laptop 😅

    the problem with gaming laptops is they nearly always overheat, as "laptops" these days arent actually really still designed for laps, the air vents are usually towards the legs. I had an alienware laptop, and killed 2 of them because I used them for gaming.. considering their RRP was >4k you'd expect they'd have lasted 12 months right.. Nope.

    That`s what i do at the moment since my spec`s are i7 2600(2 gen i7 XD), 12GB ddr3, and gtx560(1GB), so am making my asset`s as Medium setting`s quality and if and when i have money i can remake them quikcly in high or Ultra so :D ps on the coding side you can allways use a crapy laptop or pc or even a phone/tablet and do the coding but ig you need to test stuff you can use laptop or pc and use(Blocking the level and player/ stuff out or what its called when you only use low poly/cubes for testing ). ps Notpad++ is ok to use for simpel coding without the testing thoe set language to c# and its ok :D 2years agoe i used a old win-xp computer and notpad++ for wrighting code while on Vacation in east norway and hwen i got home i ported the documents via usb drive to main pc and started to fix my errors in the code and testing :D btw wisit norway for expencive tech or it might be same prices hehe , we often travell to sweden to buy candy and food since its so cheap there XD

    • @sandercohen3309
      @sandercohen3309 Před 5 lety

      You could start with a simple game that don't require a lot of investment. If you enjoy it, consider investing more into hardware/software and time. It's not the best idea to start really big or set a huge goal, because that goal will seem insurmountable and you'll give up. Start with something small. You're more likely to actually achieve it and you'll learn whether or not you actually enjoy doing this stuff.

      @@sandercohen3309 I get that, the issue is that I don't have any equipment that'd let me even make a small game. It's alright though, I can sit on it. thanks

    • @sandercohen3309
      @sandercohen3309 Před 5 lety +1

      People have been making games for decades, in a time when the hardware wasn't even close to the everyday computers we have today. Whatever laptop or desktop you've got now is probably enough to make a really simple game. It doesn't need fancy graphics or anything. Just focus on mechanics. Make it short and fun to play. At this stage it's more about making *SOMETHING* instead of making a masterpiece.
