- Chikankari is a traditional embroidery style that originated in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, and is known for its exquisite handcrafted designs. It got a GI (Geographical Indication) tag in 2008.
Chikankari has a rich history dating back over 400 years. It is believed to have been introduced by Mughal emperors in the 16th century. The art form flourished during the reign of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in the 18th century, who patronised the craft and popularised it among the nobility.
In this video, I am showing you all the steps involved in making authentic chikankari kurtas, saree & Lehengas.

Chikankari work involves delicate white thread embroidery on fine muslin or cotton fabric. Originally, it was done on white fabric, but now it is also done on pastel shades and even vibrant colors. The embroidery is done using a variety of stitches, including backstitch, chain stitch, satin stitch, and more. The designs are intricate and often depict floral motifs, paisleys, vines, and geometric patterns.
Chikankari embroidery is not just a craft; it's a reflection of tradition, heritage, and exquisite craftsmanship of India that continues to captivate people across the globe.

When she showed the work done by Lakshmi, I was blown away. Indian artisans are the best. Many international brands get their embroidery work done in India, but Indian artists don't get credit.
Even I was blown away when I saw that lehenga. The finished product didn’t look like it was done using just a needle and thread.
Indian work is so underrated, if this was in abroad, they would have developed so much of tourism and business worldwide
I agree 🙏
Very true
Yes
When she shows the process it's even more astonishing
Absolutely right
Indian marketing needs a level up 😒
You should have asked about how much an artisan gets for a piece...I'm sure..not even one fourth of the total selling price
I love, love chikankari work. Huge respect for the artisans .

Such excellent artisans but sad to see they are still living in such poverty when their work sell for such high prices!
Hi priyanka you have done a great job by showing the hard work the artisans do for a chinkari kurti.i dint know so much time and hardwork is done behind one kurti , definitely by paying amount to artisans is worth for their hardwork and dedication. Appreciate your efforts to reach out to them and showing the world about them or else they are paid less and the someone else is making money. Thank you so much for this wonderful video.
