Epic Knight Fight- The Duel - short action medieval armoured fighting movie

  • This is our first short action movie, and was written and produced by Norwich HEMA Society in an attempt to create a fight scene using authentic historical longsword fighting techniques, including half swording, pommel strikes and grappling. It was also inspired by the “Knight of Hope” by Andorea, and "Fiore" by AM productions, which had a big influence on us, and set the bar for how armoured fighting and choreography could and should be depicted.
    We wanted to depict the fighting style of the medieval Knight, showing the correct technique for fighting in medieval armour ( suit of armour or harness) whilst showing the combatants as being cautious of each other, as the fight is to the end. As the Duel ends, the two parties become visibly tired and start to feel the weight of their armour, and their breathing becomes laboured. Their actions become more clumsy and not as precise, ending in a grapple.
    Norwich HEMA society regularly train in deconsecrated churches, which brings in revenue for the Norwich Historic Churches Trust to maintain and care for these beautiful historic venues. This Knightly Duel was filmed at St Mary’s Church, Coslany, which is a medieval church in medieval quarter of Norwich, England.
    If you enjoyed this short film, please remember to like, share and subscribe, as it really helps our channel grow. Feel free to leave feedback in the comment section below. We intend to launch more armoured Knight videos soon.

    I love that actual half sword techniques have been used, and it looks like they're not running in, but being cautious ( as you would if you were fighting to the death). Good effort!

      Thank you for noticing that. We were trying to fight in the correct historical style, while replicating the caution they must have had if you know someone is going to die! Plus its our first attempt at choreography, so hopefully we'll get it better next time.

    The duel is presented rather in accordance with historical realities... The approach was that if you fail and are pierced through the body, you try to retaliate with a dagger during grappling... which is what, at 2:00-2:05, the dying knight does, grunting heavily. Also, a typical duelist dying in a fight without armor with a rapier and a dagger tried to take his opponent with him in this way (if he was still able). So the dying duelist often tried to still achieve something with the dagger. And sometimes he obtained his consolation by thrusting the dagger into, for example, the opponent's throat or groin (or, in a duel without armor, by fiercely making a sieve out of the opponent's chest, inflicting a lot of stabs thanks to adrenaline and so called "euphoria moribundi")

    Gentlemen I appreciate your effort and work!! Just watched the poleaxe video as well, and it was *EASILY* visible how much more free you felt outdoors instead of the tremendous caution required in this environment. I enjoyed both, and have subscribed and hope to comment on the poleaxe vid for the algorithm soon as I can.
    When doing choreo, it's ABSURDLY important to drill these things to a ridiculous degree with repetition... but when you're a HEMA student and learning HEMA, it can be confusing and stifling because choreo is literally a dance trying to look like HEMA, whereas HEMA is made to kill and not get killed in the process. That causes a conflict in the performer/student that I guarantee will take time and practice, practice, practice, ....pr--- *is smacked* to overcome.
    And it WILL take time, but you guys can do it. No matter what, make sure to have fun with your choreo and film making most of all. Since we (usually) don't have to kill anybody with HEMA, a certain degree of fun is going to be part of it for all of us. When you're giving a performance, remember that the fun IS nearly all of it lol. Historical accuracy is a great factor for these sorts of short-films, but never forget the joy of the dance, have fun, and do not be discouraged.
    I wish you great success and bid you all thanks for your hard work, may the flashing steel reflect the light of the Lord towards your true path. Amen.

      Thank you, that's really appreciated. We will certainly try and add more choreography into our short movies, so hopefully we will improve with time, whilst still keeping the authenticity and some of the scrappiness of real world fights.

    Yep I know you said armour is not right, but you need a wrapper or an avintail on that armet, you have no stop rib and the standard is although poor will not stop a strike straight under the helm as it will go through your jaw

    • @norwich_hema_society
      @norwich_hema_society  Před měsícem +5

      You say that, a lot of medieval artwork depicts armets being worn without a wrapper and just a standard, especially when fighting on foot.

    The fight was edifying and the kit impressive. I do have one note: Please reach out to a period band to add to your sound track, rather than a generic "epic" track. There's no shortage of medieval/Renaissance musicians & bands showcasing their work on CZcams. I'd love to see more of such collaborations. Imagine a vid of yours backed by this: czcams.com/video/P_OuEaxU7zY/video.html

      Thank you, i shall look into it. This was very much a hastily put together video ( as we thought we would lose our venue) and on a budget of less than a round of drinks. I hope to improve all elements in the future and I will certainly look into a better soundtrack.

    This is why swords suck and why the mace was invented next.

    • @AMcGrath82
      @AMcGrath82 Před 14 dny

      Swords were effective against the vast majority of folk who couldn't afford the hugely expensive full mail armour suits. Most knights carried a variety of weapons, but folk with fewer resources absolutely used bats and clubs to try and knock over knights or break the joints of their armours. Swords were side arms for much of the Middle Ages; spears, axes, and polearms were more common outside of single combat, and bladed weapons were still accurate enough to pierce gaps in armor to the point that it was still effective, while maces would take longer to wear down opponents. It's more complicated than generalizations would make it out to be.

    • @NatBlack-pr9kg
      @NatBlack-pr9kg Před měsícem +30

      Dont agree, this is proper armoured fighting technique. A lot of those techniques are shown in the manuscripts. Plus I don't think you can compare the two. Andorea only show unarmoured fighting and Dequitem tend to do a lot of plate hitting in between correct techniques.

    • @norwich_hema_society
      @norwich_hema_society  Před měsícem +14

      Thanks for your feedback. What would you prefer to see in future filming?

    • @czarus_the_sniper9924
      @czarus_the_sniper9924 Před měsícem +4

      The finish also showed one of the opponents slashing at the other, even tho he is armored so his attacks would have little effect, your argument is invalid.
      About the comparrison, Adorea might only have Knight of Hope, but it is to this day one of the most solid pieces of fighting choregraphy involving armour. Otherwise, Adoreas techiques have near flawless execution.
      Dequitem does armoured fighting almost exclusively and has made specific videos regarding the topic of regular blade strikes against armoured opponents and their actual utility, plus his fights are unchoregraphed and look much more convincing.
      Now, why could I not compare? I do not have particular problem with the techniques, rather the choregraphy and the execution. Extremely slow, at times uncertain movements, no power and energy behind attacks - there is zero dynamic, the individual engagements and the short rests feel the same. The dagger finalle could have been shot at a more convincing angle, and there could have been blood added at the end to shoe the hit, because from the current angle it is clearly visible that the dagger barely touches his gorget. (Fratres in Armis - Meatgrinder did the finalle quite well, even if the choreo might not be their best work).
      Overall it just felt flat.

    • @NatBlack-pr9kg
      @NatBlack-pr9kg Před měsícem +3

      If you look, the slash is to the unarmoured back of the leg. That is a lovely detail and actually reinforces my point rather than invalidates it. This is made my people who fight in armour, for people who fight in armour and who get those little details.
      Knight of Hope is excellent, but is an armoured opponent fighting unarmoured opponents. Thats totally different. The armoured opponent can fight in an unarmoured style, which he does. No Andorea videos show armoured vs armoured.
      And that is a criticism I have of Dequitem. A lot of what they do is blosfecthen in armour. It isn't pure harnesfecthen.
      These guys have had a go. Yes, it's not as intense or choreographed, but it's a decent attempt.

    • @norwich_hema_society
      @norwich_hema_society  Před měsícem +10

      @czarus_the_sniper9924 can I just say, what we tried to depict is two Knights starting with using proper techniques, but descending into wild flailing as they start to gas out. That was a deliberate plot device. But I do take your points on board and intend to create more intensity next time. This is our first attempt at a movie and was filmed by amateurs (namely us) on a phone, with basic editing. But I like a challenge and we will strive to be as good as Andorea!

      @@norwich_hema_society makes sense. At some point I was anticipating a throw but it did not happen, guessing that was because of the floor. Perhaps a next version outdoors, so you can show more grappling. I can imagine it is hard to combine believable show of anger and intensity with staying safe. Liked the acting in the close ups pre and post fight.

    • @norwich_hema_society
      @norwich_hema_society  Před měsícem +2

      @petrawestveer5736 yes absolutely, we have to ensure that all participants remain safe, and that we don't cause any damage to the venue. Halfswording obviously targets weak points in armour, so its hard to show intensity while pulling back to not injure anyone.

      @@petrawestveer5736 Exactly, the last phase, when one duelist was already mortally pierced through the body, but he still tried to stab with a dagger, and his opponent had much more to lose, was often very fierce.
