  • @jamesdrynan

    Robert Altman was an iconoclast. A maverick. My introduction to his style was MASH. As I became a cinephile, his movies were there as signposts of creating something unique. The multi-layered Nashville was mesmerizing in its scope and critique of the age. Hollywood needs the input of directors like Altman, Welles, etc. to bring a level of cinema that plays counterpoint to the pedestrian output.

    • @waynej2608
      @waynej2608 Před 4 lety

      Absolutely. Altman's essential, he held a mirror up to our culture, our institutions etc, and with depth, satire, and irony gave us that all encompassing glimpse into whatever cultural entity he was representing to us. He turned on it's ear the military(Mash), the western (McCabe and Mrs. Miller), the noir private eye (The Long Goodbye), country western scene (Nashville) thru Hollywood (The Player), etc...
      What a brilliant filmmaker. He was my generation's Orson Welles. A true, one of a kind.

    To those extolling the virtues of such luminaries as Spielberg and Scorsese in this thread: yes, they are great. And both have done more for film and television production than many film and teleivision producers. However, Altman has also directed for television--the brilliant series "Tanner '88," which broke through and broken ground for much of what we love on TV today--as well as the dramatic and operatic stage. It's an incomparably rich and varied career, and there is no question--none--that other directors would be grateful and honored to have many of Altman's so-called "failures" in their filmographies.
