- The candidates for the Match of the Day Goal of the Season accolade in 1985-86, won by Bryan Robson for his volley when playing for England against Israel. I think all the goals here are from the second half of the season owing to the TV blackout in the opening months of the campaign.
Other candidates were Ian Rush (Liverpool), Jesper Olsen (Man United), Gordon Davies (Man City), Frank Stapleton (Man United), Glenn Cockerill (Southampton), Steve McMahon (Liverpool) and Johnny Metgod (Nottingham Forest).
Metgod's screamer is still rising now, on it's way to the outer solar system. Best of this lot by a mile.
The best goal I saw that season came when there was no TV coverage.in November 1985. Jan Molby for Liverpool v Man United in League Cup at Anfield. Started in n his own half, beat about 4 United players before unleashing a thunderbolt past Gary Bailey from just outside the penalty area. I was stood on the Kop and had a terrific view of it.
I was on the Kop that night, too, and can confirm what a great goal that was. Molby won the ball in his own half and ran with it to the edge of the box and hammered it home. The Kop exploded. I jumped up so high and hard that I hit the jaw of someone stood behind me. No one complained. I don't know what damage the blow did to the man's jaw, but I had a lump the size of an egg on my head the next morning. Oddly, we all kept cheering at the time. Jan wrapped it up shortly after with a penalty. That was a good night. And Jan's goal was infinitely superior to this collection.

Back in the days when the football pitches DIDN'T resemble bowling greens or the golf greens of Augusta
Back in the day goal of the season reflected passing rather than a big thump from 25 yards.

Young people not understanding hardly any games were actually filmed in those days.

@@mickhammer4943 Think Stapleton's goal came from the cup game (1-1). The 2-1 win was in the league.

Forgotten all about the crackly lines for commentators in far flung corners of Europe and abroad.
When they played the old world super cup it buzzed like a swarm of angry bee's 😂 I can remember Liverpool vs Independiente and you could hear the fucking commentator !
