- Newton's Laws are the backbone of classical physics, and were fundamental for the advancement of physics in general. But where do they come from? In this stream we will find Newton's laws the same way that a modern theoretical physicist might create a new theory: by thinking about symmetry. Once we have the laws, we can then use them in some interesting examples.
Hi everyone, just wanted to make a quick note that there is a mistake in this video, in particular, in the rocket problem. Although I took into account the exhaust velocity coming out of the ship, I did not take into account that said exhaust would be ejected from a _moving ship._ Specifically, since the ship is moving in the positive direction, the exhaust velocity will be v_{e,tot} = v_s - v_e instead of just -v_e, which is what is used in the video. This actually leads to a cancellation in the equations of motion, making the resulting differential equation much easier to solve! Alternatively, one can view this problem as one where the pilots of the ship are increasing the throttle so that an observer in an inertial reference frame always sees the exhaust as exiting at the same velocity!
This one was really fun to make and I hope it can shed some interesting light on Newton's laws as well as building theories as a whole!
Wish I had these when I started learning physics - they are perfect
