I agree, though. His voice is potent. And so are the lyrics. I am not prejudiced at all with how musicians look, but I think many people are. Especially when someone doesn't quite look the way you expect them to after hearing them sing. If he was as old as he is today, and as distinguished looking as he is today, I think he would have gotten more fandom from the same song if release today in the 2020s. But then we'd have been cheated out of nearly 25 years of this song in the meanwhile.
My band opened for Edwin McCain for a small club show in Cincinnati around 1996. He had released "Solitude" but "I'll Be" wasn't out yet. He was the nicest guy. He dropped in to our dingy green room, looking a bit red-eyed, and introduced himself! He said he had just played the Letterman show the night before and he and the band were totally beat. He said they were going back to their hotel for a while to chill and we could help ourselves to the beer and whatever else was in their (much nicer) green room. And we did. :) Again, great down-to-earth guy!
