Ponga was a three sports prospect. He was sought after in rugby union, and Aussie rules football as well in his youth.
Not sure if it's been mentioned yet; The orange jersey he's in is a special jersey for the Newcastle Knights. The colours and pattern of that jersey is to simulate the hi-visibility workwear miners (and all labourers, really) wear on-site. Newcastle has a history of being working-class, and many of it's older players were sons of mine workers in the Hunter valley, so the club has a special round celebrating the miners' hard work. Newcastle has since become more middle-class, but the wider Hunter valley region is still has mining communities, and it's connection to the Knights' club is strong.
Bro if you want a good NRL player to react too, Benji Marshall. He's a legend in New Zealand. He's the first player to use skills from Touch Rugby (similar to what flag football is to gridiron) and translate it to Rugby League. Smaller player but uses the sidestep (juke) and magic hands to his advantage. He paved the way for players like Shaun Johnson and Kalyn Ponga. Kalyn Ponga won the Dally M (NRL player of the year) in 2023. Benji won 1 premiership with Tigers and 1 World Cup with New Zealand. Benjis retired now and new coach for the Wests Tigers and for most New Zealanders, he's our rugby league goat
