Try this as a challenge: Top 10 Movies The Studio Versions Are Better Than The Director's Vision.
American History X
I've heard of a Marvel comic like that. Supposedly the creator(s?) pitched destructive superhero-versus-villain fight scenarios. The twist would be some focus on how an ordinary citizen is effected. One example was a commuter stuck on one side of a bridge that such titans had just wrecked. The comic would also follow officials who assessed devastation.
In response to this pitch, the big editorial change was to make these side stories about major events in Marvel continuity. It was taken as meddling, at first, but all involved warmed up to the idea. The series title is Damage Control.
@@alm2187 Wasn't very TV show about that kind of stuff but it end up flopping
There's a couple, but the studio is almost never right. These are the rare cases where the director's vision has achieved a false ascension. Most the time, director's artistic intentions SHOULD'VE prevailed. It's why I prefer more independant films, not that I don't love a big-budget blockbuster when handled right every once in a while. Smaller movies go more interesting and niche places that big movies are too afraid to go in fear of losing their audiences. Marrying the two is best when you get classics like INCEPTION.
@@DJGamingSmash I know they're rare, that's the challenge.
Also, Nolan has his own studio so they can't exactly disagree with him.
Also also, ironically, Tenet seemed like it needed more decisions from the studio people. It felt like more on concept than story and characters for the audiences to care for.
How about Disney making John Carter, then completely running away from properly promoting it; letting people know that it was based on what was essentially the first ever "Sci-Fi on another world" novel.
That made ERB inc queasy!
I read those books like they were drugs when I was a kid.

Why don’t you search up scary movie trailer? The cover is the scream killer holding a girls head or cabin in the woods trailer that shows a pile of dead bodies on the cover?
Brazil. Great movie.
It's the reason I clicked on this. lol.
@@chris26479 did you watch all???? it has a deeper meaning about the fragile structure of how government, how a literal fly can overthrow everything and literally destroy the system. paperwork requires paperwork which requires more paperwork, the system is broken and doesn't function properly. re-evaluate your opinion and rewatch it......there is a much deeper meaning. i fell asleep watching it the first time, and decided to give it another chance. holy shit best decisions ever.
When I read the title, the name that comes immediately in my mind it is: Justice League
I'm suprised Fant4stic (2015) didn't make the list.
Surprised justice league isn't on here
Is not always a good idea a small director making a big movie overnight
You never know when a studio is gonna think they can control you
What About RED 2 Summit Entertainment and DC Comics rushed production on the sequel after the originals box office success
Red 2 was good tho
I honestly thought the 1993's Super Mario Bros movie was gonna be number 1 because of all the issues behind the scenes like the insane amount of times the script was rewritten, cast members not like the directors, and stuff like that.
Dishonorable Mentions:
*Cool World - What if I told you that the script for this movie, wasn't the original script that Ralph Bakshi had planned.
*Fantastic 4 (2015) - The story of how studio interference ruined this movie is now the stuff of legend.
*Super Mario Bros. - Lemme put these rumors to rest. It turns out the actual reason why the film is so unfaithful is because Nintendo wouldn't allow studios to use their beloved characters.
*The Amazing Spiderman 2 - Studios clearly learned nothing from Spiderman 3, they did it again!
*The Lorax - So. Much. Pandering. And they simplified the message by having clear sides which contradicts the message of the book. As such, the intent and message gets lost in the need to appeal to a massive audience.
On a side note what's more upsetting is the film we DIDN'T get, including a song that could've proved beneficial to the story. In the original script, the Onceler had a lot more agency. He wasn't pressured by his family to be successful, he wanted success on his own, AND he was good at it. But over time, it stopped being about getting by in life, it became about getting as big as possible. Enter the song, "Biggering," a song that was only released in the offical soundtrack. This would've explored his character better by having him fall into villainy unintentionally by getting to the root of the problem, pride.
*Robocop (2014) - Making an R-Rated classic PG-13 is like trying to neuter Mortal Kombat. And look how well THAT turned out... twice!
If the Lorax movie for having at least one good thing, it's that it made memes.
I still wish we got the original script for Cool World.
Super Mario Brorhers also went through five directors and three versions of the script DURING the production. Pretty sure that had a lot to do with it, too...
Ralph Bakshi's original script although interesting, wasn't that good at all. Yes it would have been better than what we got but would have still failed to make the cash.
Fant4stic is a bad movie & a bad production in general. If behind the scenes information is anything then Josh trank didn't even have a vision for the film (didn't help that he fought the actor he wanted to be cast).
How Justice League isn’t #1 or here at all is beyond me smh
I figure it is more Joss Wheadon's fault, since he had to film about half of it, so he could have been the one to make the changes.
We shall see.
@@DarthUmbra The guys at DC definetly had a major importance in encouraging the reshoots
JL was pretty good. And the Synder Cut is Gonna Be AMAZING
True
Why is this list times perfectly for ZSJusticeLeague to come out yet doesn’t include the original?
Because they're still unsure about that movie. Just because a director has complete control over everything doesn't mean a good movie also. Age of ultron and Wonder Woman 84 had complete director control over everything and they weren't exactly the best movies. Even MCU fans consider age of ultron to be the weakest of the mcu
So far I have liked the studio version of JL quite well
@@seanmalloy0528 my biggest concern is they probably want yo continue even after snyder's versions are done. What could they do after darkseid

@@seanmalloy0528 Snyder cut there is no denying after his movies are done Warner brothers gonna wanna continue so how are they going to Make sure anyone they fight after dark side is more powerful
You're forgetting how Morgan Creek interfered with The Exorcist III and Nighbreed
The ironic thing is I might like the theatrical cut of Superman II more than Donner's Cut. Also, how is Justice League not on here? Granted, that one film is worth an entire list but still that is such a massive case study in studio meddling.
This is why independent films are usually do much better in terms of storyline snd character development ..no egocentric studio heads to deal with.
There needs to be a contract/Law that says if you’re just a studio head you can’t touch the project
@@starvoltnexus3139 Unfortunately there was one recent movie that had director complete control over everything the writers special effects what could be cut what couldn't be cut and it still ended up bad. I think there should be an equal balance
@@moneylover318 ok
@@moneylover318 The Room (2003) comes to mind. It's not as if independent film producers didn't have any say when it comes to the end product, but the director having no oversight and/or constructive critique whatsoever usually results in a disaster of a film (in this case, a happy accident of a disaster).

And Rogue One.
@@Zeddyboi86 actually, Rogue One was good. And even if it wasn't, it's not like Kathleen Kennedy fired Lord and Miller.
@@annafowdy I’m not saying Rogue One isn’t good. But the studio fired Garth Edwards, hired Tony Gilroy, and reshot like HALF the movie. I guess it’s not “sabotage” if the movie is good, but there was still a SHIT-ton of studio meddling.

@@LoboMeiji To be honest no matter who was in charge of the movie it was not a good idea to have darkseid or steppenwolf introduced so soon. They both should've been built up or at least have steppenwolf bring a earth based threat after him and not darkseid
@@moneylover318 don't know why but some people, no matter what happened with the studio, changes, cut off etc, they will always try to blame it on Zack.

Raimi: Fine you want Venom? I’ll give a Venom!
The voice-over of Blade Runner '82 didnt bother me, I like both versions.
What about the last iteration of Fantastic Four??
The movie for me was Rise of Skywalker- because it didn't seem to be building to the reveal and to me felt shoe horned
it was still a success though.
Rise of Skywalker wasn't trash because the studio interfered with its production, it was trash because, with The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson completely sabotaged every plotline that The Force Awakens set the groundwork for.
Treasure Planet from Disney was kind of set up to fail
There’s a theory that producers at Disney wanted to move on from the animation style seen in movies like Tarzan, Road to El Dorado, and TP, called “Deep Canvas”. The movie was not marketed well and was released in competition with THE FIRST HARRY POTTER FILM along with Disney’s own sequel to the highly successful Santa Clause series.
After the success of movies like The Incredibles and Ratatouille, Disney switched gears and moved toward a new style of animation.
Allegedly a sequel to Treasure Planet was in the works and was suggested to be better, but it was laid to rest even after the original surprised critics with impressive DVD sales despite not performing at the box office
Huh. I expected films like Justice League, Rogue One and Solo on this list.

@@parimabartender I don't, I had to look for it!! I'm a huge fan of the novel series, so it was definitely disappointing.
What about the Super Mario Bros. movie? Have you seen the story about its production?
You missed one: "Cool World (1992)." Paramount and producer Frank Mancuso Jr. went behind director Ralph Bakshi's back and brought in three other writers to re-write the script into what the film ultimately became, rather than a live-action/animated HORROR film (like what Ralph had originally intended). Even Kim Basinger (a.k.a. Holli Would) tried imposing her own changes to the film so it could be something that she could show to children in hospitals (no joke).
I remember being so excited to see Alien 3. I got to the theater and was like “WTF?!”
Sony ruined the amazing spiderman franchise. They literalyy overstuffed the sequel amd broke andrew garfield's heart
I didn't understand the cranes thing and why Spiderman needed help getting from point A to point B. I don't mean that I don't get it, but I mean he seems to be 'underpowering'. Is this really the same spider person who can stop a train and catch cars as if they were toys?
@@genki2705 HE WAS SHOT IN LEG
I was expecting Justice League to be #1
Amazing video and it’s sucks that studios get involved miss with a movie make it ten times worst then it was before too. Fantastic job on the video watch mojo
Dragonheart - The film was meant to be a high fantasy for a mature audience with moments of graphic violence but the studio and poor choice of director dumbed it down for young kids and made script changes that make them look stupid (for example, the pigs in the starving swamp village).
Small Soldiers - Originally supposed to be an edgy film for teenagers but the Burger King sponsorship forced Joe Dante to make it more geared for little kids even though he already shot most of the film.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - An early script featured many callbacks to the previous two films like the Book of the Dead; Hamunaptra in the prologue; the Emperor draining people's lifeforce to heal himself; more graphic body horror (fossilized guts, maggots, exposed brain bits), etc. The story also took place during World War II rather than after it with Rick and Evy as spies for the British government and Alex as a teenager. The Emperor showed more of his powers, and instead of the zombie army at the end, the O'Connells would have performed a ritual connected to the five Chinese elements to try and stop the Emperor while he tried to stop them.
Batman Forever - Joel Schumacher wanted the movie to be longer, darker, and a bit more serious than what we got. It would've explored more of the theme of Batman's duality, and his guilt over his parents' death and the Graysons. The script also had a better connection to Batman (1989) and Returns with mentions of the Joker to firmly establish the film as a sequel, but the studio got cold feet after Batman Returns' reception and wanted a more 'marketable' movie that McDonald's could sell Happy meals with.
Justice league, Solo a star wars story????
Both of these are top 3 why aren't they on the list
Given that Suicide Squad is a movie featuring a team of supervillains it should have had an R rating.
Suicide Squad movie is the perfect epitome of how it feels writing your exam in the last minutes

Top 10 Movies We Want To See
Figures since the director's cut was international from day one since Universal didn't distribute it there. Fox distributed it overseas. Same thing happened for both studios a year later with Ridley Scott's Legend.
2011's The Thing prequel. Film still had issues but its biggest one was the shit CGI, especially considering how fantastic the originals effects were and still are. Turns out, they DID use practical effects, animatronics, the whole works, studio exec's didnt like it though and had them put CGI over the whole thing which looked absolutely rubbish.
This list could go on ans on. for example, what about "Snowpiercer"?
How about Transformers: The Last Knight or The Cloverfield Paradox?
Treasure planet better be on here.......
When will America learn that its own audience doesn't always want a happy ending jfc. Yeah sure the escapism they bring is nice, they feel good to watch, but life ain't all sunshine and rainbows, and our media is allowed to reflect that!

Jurassic Park 3 also had studio interference (Sort of) like according to Sam Neil he only got the finished script ON THE SET because script kept on changing during production that even the director didn’t even know what he was doing while shooting.
Or what about Justce League?
Why don't studios just LEAVE THE FILMAKERS ALONE AND LET THEM DO WHAT THEY WANT.
Right? How many times can you say "the movie got WAY better after the execs got involved"?
THE RISE OF SKYWALKER WAS CUT DOWN FROM 4 HRS TO 2 HRS!!! WTF!!
I’m not sure if this counts, but I think _Thomas and the Magic Railroad_ could be an honorable mention, since the original cut had a completely different antagonist and the plot was more fleshed out.
Though the main reason for all the changes was probably because of the test audiences, maybe not so much the studio. (Test audiences said that the original cut was “too scary” for young children.)
Two Paramount films should have been mentioned, GI Joe 1 and The Last Airbender
I hear there's an oblique trend where a studio will single out one of its own projects and sabotage not the production, but the marketing. True? Could make another interesting list.
The example I got was Jon Carter of Mars.
I'm suprised Justice League wasn't on this list, that fell down the same rabbit hole as Suicide Squad because Warner Bros wanted the DCEU to be similar to the MCU which completely ruins it. DC is meant to be dark. I can't wait for the Synder and Ayer cuts.
I'm surprised "Exorcist: The Beginning/ Dominion" was not number 1. Surprised the 1925 "Phantom of the Opera," "Mimic" or "Halloween 6" didn't make honorable mention. But glad "Superman II" was mentioned.
What about Disney ruining the Star Wars sequel trilogy in the Star Wars franchise? Rise of Skywalker was a disappointment for an example.
Another list category that could be on: movies that expect you to keep up with other media. You might question why Palpatine's back and be told "old news" because that was revealed in Fortnite, even though that cameo didn't explain much. And I hear Lando's connection with Janna is made clear in another tie-in.
There's also the Joker movie. I posted on the merits of making these things more canon-consistent. Someone replied "I'll give you a pass for not knowing that was Black Label." Guess I'd call that conditional logic.
Perhaps the Internet is making standalone movies go out of style.
Brazil is one of my favorite movies!! I had never even heard of it.... then, I played The Outer Worlds! :)
Warner Bros seems to love meddling with their movies like Scooby Doo 2002 but DC is their core franchise and therefore gets the most mistreatment.
Disney's Treasure Planet should be on here they promised two of their best animators a passion project a reimaging of Treasure Island that Disney wanted desperately to fail so much so that they released it against one of their own movies & The Sequel to Harry Potter also they drastically under promoted Treasure Planet. One of Disney must underrated Films
Eisner Drinks your tears with delight
There's more than 10 times this has happened.
Sadly true
Was expecting Fant4stic to be on this list.
Could add Highlander and Big Trouble In Little China to this list, as the studio (20th Century Fox), had no idea how to market the movies, and that caused them to flop at the box office. Might as well just make one entry "20th Century Fox" instead of just one film.
Pocahontas was plagued by Disney adding rewrites and them taking out a couple deleted scenes, one we all knew too well, and why the hell was it only 81 minutes, it needed 9 more
And yet with all that those Studio execs continue to mess with films and then blame everyone else for what they did! Nice t see most are out of the industry at least those from the past!... Right?!?!?1
What about Fant4stic?
Maybe it's so bad nobody want to talk about.
You know that fox reshot the movie and re-edited behind the directors back because they didn’t like the movies final cut. And if the reports are true they also locked him out of the editing room for it as well.
@@doublea1148 Nop, actually the original cut was never finished, Josh Trank leaved the production, otherwise he was getting fired, they changed almost everything because they didn’t like the realistic, dark and violent version of Trank.
To whoever is reading this, I hope you have a great day!
People really miss understand the Spiderman 3 emo Peter scenes...they're meant to be cringy, the whole plot of the symbiote suit is that it gives you feelings of power and confidence, Peter is a nerd who's got the suit which is giving him a huge boost in overconfidence but he's still a nerd to the world, hence the looks he gets from the chicks.
But I still imagine a Spider Man 3 with ONLY Sandman

Alien 3 the Assembly Cut is a MASTERPIECE. Pure and simple
Knights of Badassdom should have been on this list. That movie could have been so good.
I'm surprised that Cool World was not on the list.
Re: Blade Runner - you forgot to mention Sir Ridley Scott's 2007 'Ultimate Edition' of Blade Runner...'The Final Cut'
The 2006 remake of Black Christmas as well as The Crow City of Angels are both movies ruined by Harvey Weinstein. Also the Blair Witch 2 would have been amazing.
SCOOB!: Warner Bros. forgot to ask the original voice actors for the Scooby-Doo characters and they retooled the entire script while keeping some elements of the original draft in.
They "convinced" Raimi to add Venom like Kim Jong Un "convinced" North Korea to stay in line throughout his rule.
I hate studios trying to make everything below R rating...i mean they can cut the nude scenes.. but keep the damn gore, blood and humor man...
And the language. People curse in real life, and a lot of times, movie dialogue just feels unrealistic when it cuts it out.
Btw I've never seen Brazil but that's gotta be the creepiest thumbnail I've seen in a while. Imagine that baby chasing you in your nightmares.....Big NOPE!
How do studios that make movies fail so hard at making movies XD

I had no idea about Gene's body double in Superman II. @.@
For Blade Runner the studio “happy ending” results in the principal plot for Blade Runner 2049. Deckar really run away with Rachel and even have a child !
Jon Favreau's Chef is the manifestation of all the frustrations he had during Iron Man 2. It was a masterpiece. I wish we will have Chef 2.
You left out probably one of the most major ones, Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America. In the US, the studio cut the film from its theatrical 229 minute epic runtime to only 139 minutes AND changed the film to chronological order (the film is told with a series of flashbacks throughout). The original is considered one of the best gangster movies ever, while the US was obviously critically panned.
At least we finally got the original cut. Close to it anyway
Hancock: no responsibility from Will Smith? Go figure.
I'm honestly surprised that Fantastic Four (2015) wasn't on this list.
You forgot to mention Hook! That movie was sabotaged by the studio, Spielberg originally wrote the movie’s script under Disney. Once TriStar took over and changed the screenplay against Spielberg’s wishes, he hated the movie and was disappointed with it!
Hancock was great. And after seeing the donner cut of superman 2, I prefer the original. And spiderman 3 was a great movie even though it wasn't as good as the first 2 and still the best spiderman movies despite the fact that Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland are great spidermen. And suicide squad didn't get mixed responses, it was hated by everyone because it was just bad.
No ‘I Am Legend’ fucking up the ending?

Yep, the Director’s Cut is so much better then the original release.
