    The the height, wheels. proportions are all just, _sooo perfect._ I just binge watched the build videos yesterday and this was exactly what you were going for from inception! I am a mechanical engineer, it also was(is) my dream to build custom vehicles after work, hone my skills, and do all the cool stuff you’re doing. Though,_(bummer alert)_ I ended up getting rare brain & spine cancer, that took away physical ability for my burgeoning hobby, financials, and new career. All gone before I could pay degree off or vest. _That’s why I mean it when I say_ *Thanks for letting me live vicariously through you.* (Even the lifted viper idea was my favorite expression of a “cool vehicle” in my childhood drawings! 😊)
    If anyone curious b/c what I mentioned: I’m doing as well as I can under circumstances. After recovering from surgery, I went back to school and am now finishing a master’s in industrial engineering to focus on data science applied to heavy machinery. Round 2 is coming up with the cancer though, but I hope to publish my Thesis before surgery, and start my PhD once (or if) I recover. At least tuition is free for me, and I can continue a research project I’ve been growing building and getting funding for and industry interest. I’d hoped to live long enough to follow through on my backup plan of starting an applied data science & machinery reliability services/management/consulting company.

    I know engineering vehicles is hard, but this channel properly educates me on just how hard it actually is. You change one thing on the suspension and it seems to have a domino-effect everywhere else. Even using similar geometry from common production vehicles doesn't change how much testing is involved in making it all work. That being said, the break-neck progress on this project is really impressive, especially considering it's a one-man show.

    • @asciimation
      @asciimation Před 10 měsíci +7

      I get that on building a replica vehicle. People say 'why don't you do X to improve it' without realising if you change X you end up with cascading changes everywhere and you end up not replicating the thing you started with. Better to go with what the factory did. Obviously not in Matt's case here this being the greatest car anyone has ever made.

      It's so hard to explain, I'm not a "real" engineer, I work in software, but so many times people are like "Just do that part, why do you have to revamp the foobungler?!?" - maybe even harder with things you can't point to and say "here is the problem, this thing hits that thing".

    • @agerrgerra1361
      @agerrgerra1361 Před 10 měsíci +3

      Part of the difficulty is doing conversions on existing vehicles, rather than being able to design the whole thing from scratch. Usually there's some structure that was designed to mount some specific components, and it either gets in the way of the new components or just isn't in a convenient spot for the new parts to mount to. Being able to remove something like a subframe and fabricate a whole new subframe can solve a lot of problems.

      @yucannthahvitt251 Před 10 měsíci +7

      For an American, the sentence "I hope you appreciate the modification freedom you have in CA" is quite comical, because CA has the least modification freedom of any state in the USA. In the other side of the country in Florida, for example, you can basically do whatever you want to your car. Which is scary at times when you are on the road in your tiny japanese classic and a borderline monster truck is behind you, but is usually just really great because it means I didn't have to worry about 4" high flow catalytic converters when building my drag car or inspections and emissions when doing my engine swaps.

    While it probably won't be an issue, the shelf loading (7:30 or so) now looks like the set up for the Hyatt Regency walkway collapse. The joints that were trimmed are now carrying a bit more weight than before (about 1.5 to 1.75 times would be my first guess).

    • @Swiggityswagger
      @Swiggityswagger Před 10 měsíci +2

      The load on them is increased because the front posts are gone, but its nothing like the Hyatt walkway. The threaded hangers aren't carrying double weight. Its just whether that beam can hold the greater load and moment of the redesign.

    • @ianbelanger7459
      @ianbelanger7459 Před 10 měsíci +8

      @@Swiggityswagger there is some confusion. The issue is with the connection on the upper shelf. Just like the Hyatt, the front connection for the upper shelf used to only carry the weight of the upper shelf. With the lower shelf now connected to the upper shelf by the rods and not the board anchored in the ceiling, the connection on the front of the upper shelf is carrying the weight of both shelves (the exact increase would be calculated based on the relative depths of the shelves).

    This is awesome! As an owner of a 98 GTS that has been dreaming of this idea for years, it's great to see someone actually do it! If you want to free up some movement for the rear suspension, check out a company called Rock Krawler. They offer a four-link conversion for that Gladiator axle that would solve your binding problems. That stacked arm design works like a radius arm and is very difficult to get articulation out of. The RK system has a truss designed for that axle and the uppers mount to the stock JT frame mounting points, which is very similar to what you have. I believe you have enough room to make that style of upper work. The other challenge with your current arm setup is the pinion stays flat as the axle cycles. This creates issues with U-joint bind. The Gladiator's factory driveline doesn't use a traditional U-joint, so it's more forgiving for this.

    NGL, it hurt watching you cut the radiator support. I've repaired so many because they are so expensive and you had a clean one.
    BTW if you ever need, you can change the height of the radiator support alittle bit, as there are shims between the support and the frame. Mostly for body lines with the front fascia, but you might find another use for this information.
    Awesome build, I love it. Makes me kinda wanna replicate what you have done. Though I'm sure the WW (wife & wallet) board of exec's will say no.

    The table dilemma is why I only have one (giant) workbench. The shakers figured this out 100 years ago, horizontal surface area breeds clutter. One bench forces you to clean a small area more often, and to follow through on work. I can take on two or three projects at the same time before I hit a hard stop. That's a healthy amount for me. One I'm excited about, one I'm dreading, one waiting for parts...

    Matt you’re incredible and your genius is beyond comparison. You have created something of wonder!
    I love that because this was built with actual CAD rather than Cardboard CAD shit is constantly interfering and has to be modified.
    It reminds me of when engineers and designers create drawings in the construction industry. All the most important details are left out, everything that’s easy and proven to work has been thrown out the window because some senior engineer made a mistake once so now they have devised a new better way to do things. So it now must be built in a way that’s 2X as expensive, 2X the man hours, with parts that exist in catalogs only. But hey at least it looks good in their head and on the computer. No matter what, do not expect them to come to come look at something in person.
    PS: don’t worry Matt this isn’t you, you’re the best engineer and we all love you.

    The OEM Dodge Viper truck thing they did was super cool, but this is what we all wanted. The OEM truck was shockingly cool tho...a guy came in with one to get an exhaust tip replaced after backing it into something...but while it was there, noticed the engine is set low and back in the engine bay, like a sports car, it had 16" brake discs on the front, iirc, and ducting through the bumper to cool the brakes. I think it had 20" wheels stock, and back then, they were the largest OEM wheels and brakes I had seen. Pretty sure the wheels were staggered as well...wider in rear than front, and some really wide tires...cannot remember exact size, but wide. The owner told the guy who replaced the exhaust tip to do a burnout, he kinda sqwauked the tires but didnt want to break anything so the owner hopped in, said something like, "i wanna smoke these tires so I can try something different", hopped in, and did the most effortless burnout ever...the truck barely moved at all, no squat, nothing, just barely revved and rear tires spinning smoothly and billowing smoke. The owner of our shop had just put in a new parking lot and was not impressed...but we were lol
