The Whispers are definitely a family, not just group members. They stayed together through thick and thin for decades. Not too many groups can say that, as they break up over just about anything (primarily money). But The Whispers always had each other's backs.

One thing I LOVE is seeing is how R&B groups changed from wearing identical suits/pants suits in the early 70's to individual suits in the 80's! They look amazing even now! The Whispers epitomize classy and smooth!

The Whispers my all-time favorite group!!!!
    Members include:
    The Twins, and lead vocalists:
    Wallace and Walter Scott.
    The fancy dancer: The Late
Nicholas Caldwell, created the dance steps, and wrote many of their popular songs
    The other tall guy:
    Leavell Decree or Degree
    AND The Late Marcus Hutson

  • @Musicvegan01
    @Musicvegan01 Před 11 měsíci +3

The Whispers first records came out around 1964, but the the group didn't really become popular until the mid-1970s. Other R&B vocal groups like The Spinners, The O'Jays, The Emotions, & The Dramatics also originated in the 1960s, but got radio success in the 1970s. Check out The Whispers' songs "Headlights", "Olivia", "Lady" & their Christmas song "Happy Holidays To You". They also had the "Soul Train" theme song for a few seasons called "Up On Soul Train". I think they are the act who made the most appearances on "Soul Train".

The Whispers have a long string of hits, dating back to 1971: Sometimes I Gotta Do Wrong, A Mother For My Children, All The Way, and many others. Their best, IMHO, is their 1978 album Open Up Your Love, with Chocolate Girl, and I'm Gonna Make You My Wife, a fantastic proposal song.

If this is your groove, definitely check out the Bar-Kays. "Freakshow On The Dancefloor" (not to be confused with Midnight Star's "No Parking On The Dancefloor" which I think y'all have done already) is a good starting point. They were big in the 70s, but I know their '80s stuff better. Many of the band was killed in a plane crash. And - how cool is this - the horn player for the Bar-Kays, Ben Cauley lived across the street from my mother-in-law until his passing in 2015.

That funky bass is the work of Producer and bassist Leon Sylvers. Leon was a member of the Sylvers, another seventies R&B group that consisted of nine members of
his family. Their biggest hit was "Boogie Fever". Leon was the inhouse producer for Solar Records. Solar Records was kinda considered the funky eighties version of Motown.
It consisted of some of the hottest R&B/Funk groups of the eighties including The Whispers, Shalamar, Lakeside, Midnight Star, Carrie Lucas, Klymaxx, and Dynasty (the group
Leon became a part of after leaving The Sylvers). Leon produced these artists and played bass on many of their recordings. If you like early eighties R&B bass, then these are the
artist you want to listen to.

They were the First Group in R & B to have "Twins". The other being Jagged Edge. Also remember that Will Smith Sampled "And The Beat Goes On" for Welcome To Miami, if any of them wrote it, they get Songwriters Royalties, they have been the recipients of many Awards mostly by R & B Organizations, but they still aren't in The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

The fun thing about The Whispers was, they always set their albums up the same way and it was stated on the album cover. Side A is for Dancin' , side B is for Romancin' !!😅

When I was young, My mom's insurance man told me he used to book music groups for shows, The Whispers being one of them. Of course I thought he was pulling my leg, but he said they were in town and he'd bring Wallace Scott by for a quick visit. Sure enough, the next day he rang the doorbell, and they both walked in. Needless to say, I was shocked. I had a chance to talk to him for about fifteen minutes. A very nice man.

I think these were my first introduction to R&B as such. There most famous and my personal favourite is "The beat goes on" This one is definitely my second favourite and it's the guy in the red jacket that always makes me laugh with how smooth he is 😂
