She wrote the song about the abusive marriage that she was in as well as how her ex-husband was trying to kill her career. She dedicated it to everyone that is overcoming trauma, but especially the Columbine school shooting victims

Mariah sang her ass off on this song. This was about the abuse she suffered under her label and her husband Tommy Mottola who was the CEO of her label. She recorded this not too long after their divorce. Mariah writes her songs in a way that can apply to many different situations and to many individuals but overall the song is about her personal struggles she had to overcome.
Outside is her greatest work of art and her most underrated song!

The note sequence you refer to is a perfectly executed descending, major run. Shout out to everyone who listens to the fabulous Morales Revival Triumphant Mix over this saccharine ballad. The stellar climax notwithstanding, the song is very MOR and the video is cheesy. I still laugh when thinking of Mariah picking up and moving Diane Warren out of the way on the red carpet. Next! I’d rather listen to 100% over this album version. My main issue with Rainbow is that the ideas and the vocals are there, but the execution results in filler songs.

That mix is my favourite of Mariah's. It touches me even more than the original, though I do like the original too. I think Mariah's strength and will to overcome her misfortunes is even more poignant in the remix.

A song that inspired a lot in the world. She is My Saving Grace.
I have to say that I'm very happy she fights back. It's similar to how I feel about Xtina when it came to her speaking her mind. I think for people who are touched by their (singers) strength and messages it gives them the strength to fight as well. It can't be easy, but this is why I always say I'm proud of the lambs. Mariah took a lot of garbage when she returned to sing for that New Years event and I'm so glad they had her back. She simply loves to sing and write music and I definitely think even if her nodules cause her problems she should continue to do what she loves . Even if she was a horrible singer, I would not feel right judging what gives her a peace of mind and a state of happiness.

This is one of Mariah's best buck-up songs, but to me and many others, nothing will ever come close to OUTSIDE. It's not inspirational, it's not motivational, but it is all about self-acceptance no matter how painful it may be and how it matters in a world where you will always be on the outside. It's one of Mariah's saddest songs, but one of the most beautiful nonetheless.
