    klein knew the rules so well, he was able to break free. the same with Picaso, he painted traditionally before his more famous work. you have to know the rules before you break them. klein filled the frame a lot, he used complex composition, anchor points and subject matter. Subject matter negates composition at times but when you have great subject matter and composition, you get Henri Cartier Bresson. in short, learn the rules first. there are over 137 forms of composition and if you are stuck with rule of thirds then you have a whole world to discover!

      It's rare to read intelligent comments like this. Unfortunately today people don't know it and ignore that rules an limitations are so important for any language to communicate your thoughts/vision.

    That William Klein documentary is what got me started in Street Photography back in 2013. Before seeing it on the BBC, I didn't even know there was such a thing called Street Photography. It literally blew my mind. William Klein is a G!… ✊🏿

    Great video. Love that old photography and what history gave us your channel has enough subjects to go on for years.
    At 2:20 you were talking about 'not being technical perfect' but that is what makes street photography so great cause the image (scenery) is what it is all about.
    There is no second chance. Even blurry pictures are good if it tells a story and keep people looking at it or a while, instead of tossing it aside and going further looking at the next image.
    Thanks for sharing, nice weekend

I then bought a camera instead, like you do. So now I'm trying to educate myself to degree level for free without the certificate, like you do. About the wide angle lens...I recently took a trip to Vancouver and I lost my 40mm lens somewhere along the way :(. I had a 24-50 zoom lens that I had to use as backup. Looking through my photos I was shocked at the amount of photos I took at 24mm. Whether it was a street photo or an personal photo, I found my 24mm photos to be much more intimate. I think I had the idea that filling the frame with a subject was more intimate. But the 24mm photos were more interesting and had more "feeling" than my 50mm (or 40mm) shots. It was eye opening. Thanks for another incredible video!

    • @ThePhotographicEye
      @ThePhotographicEye  Před 2 lety +3

      Always felt more onboard with my 28mm rather than the 35mm - 24mm felt too wide - funny how we all feel things in photography, rather than stay with proscribed rules.

    Great survey / raison d'etre. When I got my Nikkormat FTn from a photojournalism student, it came with a Nikkor 55mm 1.2 lens. Not soon after I bought a Nikkor HC 28mm f3.5 and used a 28mm for years and years. I even surprised my instructor when I used my Nikkor 28mm AF and expired 35mm Polaroid film to shoot in her fashion workshops with Speedotrons. Mostly out of space constraints, but she liked them. Thanks for the William Klein bio!

    "He's just having fun." That's what I thought when I saw those pictures of Klein amongst the crowd. When I told my husband that I was "off to work", he harrumphed "Work! You're just having fun taking photos of good looking young guys." I couldn't deny it, even though they were good looking young gang guys. I photographed almost exclusively with a 35 mm lens.
