  • This is a slightly shortened story from Wil Wheaton's audio book Dancing Barefoot, narrated by him and photos added by me to enhance the narrative with a slightly humorous twist... or perhaps slightly twisted humour
    I made it for my kids on a rainy day They thought it was a laugh so shared it.
    Big fan of both Shatner and Wheaton's work -so no offence to either
    Stories, opinions and humour welcome in comments but plain rude, mean stuff towards either actor is not published

    I've meet three Star Trek actors over the years
    - Wil Wheaton: I met him not at a sci-fi con, but at some sort of public event with a celebrity meet-and-greet. He wasn't particularly talkative, but there was quite a line, and he was giving out free autographs. (I think paid autographs were still frowned upon.) I had asked for two: I had two copies of "Strike Zone", which had the likeness of a Klingon, Picard, and Wesley on the front cover. He made one out to me, and one out to a teenage friend of mine, who had CP and couldn't make it around large public gatherings. Wheaton was still a teenager, so he may've been a bit subdued to the whole meet-and-greet situation. But he was as nice as could be expected.
    - James Doohan: This was also not at a sci-fi con, but was at an auto show. I'd brought my copy of "The Star Trek Compendium" for him to sign. Most other people had some sort of stand-alone picture (8x10s, etc.), but I brought a book. He was as gregarious as one would hope. I opened my book to a page that had a still of him in the episode "The Galileo Seven", where Scotty was electrifying the hull of the shuttlecraft to ward off some attacking beasts. One of the guys handling the autograph desk asked in a puzzled way, "What's that?" indicating my book. Mr. Doohan opened the book up to other pages, showing this guy what the compendium was, and how it had all this interesting trivia and behind-the-scenes information. He then asked where the picture was that I wanted signed. He reopened it and signed. A very sweet guy!
    - George Takei: Mr. Takei was actually the first ST actor I'd met. I had just moved to a big city (Washington, DC), and my parents pointed out there was a science fiction convention at the Marriott Twin Bridges in Arlington, VA. When I got there, I just melded into the crowds, looking at merchandise and collectables. I heard an announcement that he was going to speak in a certain room, and I just went. I don't recall paying for an admittance to that event; I just went in and stood about center of the room. Mr. Takei came out, and he was effing hilarious. I recall laughing all the way through the hour or so that he spoke. Right after that, he was signing autographs. Being a motel, the only space they had for this was in a hallway. So all the fans that wanted autographs lined up; the line snaked around several halls in the motel. I think he was only scheduled for an hour of signing, and it was 90 minutes later that I was approaching his table. I was afraid that they'd close the session because it was taking so long. But Takei kept signing, talking, laughing with each fan that came up to meet him. I had the same concordance that I'd later have signed by Doohan. This time, I opened the book to a picture of Sulu from "The Naked Time", when he was chasing his crewmates around with a fencing foil. (He'd told a story about how he'd been practicing fencing, and everyone thought he was just playing ambush with the foil.) He found it amusing that I picked that picture (with him all glistening and shirtless; I just wanted an action picture, not a beefcake pose), and then he signed it "D'Artagnan" instead of "George Takei". :)

    I ran into Shatner at Shooters Restaurant in Lex. Ky in 1985-86. He was with 2 females. They were all dressed in Westetn wear, and had dust all over their clothes. Our table was next to his. I asked the waitress for another table. He overheard and grabbed my elbow as we walked by. "What's wrong?" he asked.
    I told him I was a fan, and there was no way I could have dinner with my wife without staring at one if my childhood heros....which is rude.
    He laughed and said it was a nice gesture. He was very friendly and personable. I guess I caught him on a good day.

    Shatner has a reputation of being a jerk to everyone, fans and coworkers alike.
    George Takei has hated him since the '60s.

    • @hhale
      @hhale Před 6 lety +13

      Shatner has also said publicly that he doesn't understand why Takei has a problem with him, and that they barely spoke while they were making "Star Trek" together. Shatner has also said that if Takei felt dissed back then, he (Shatner) apologizes.
      Shatner isn't the monumental dick that some think he is. Is he everyone's cup of tea? No.

    You know the episode where the transporter split Kirk into two parts? A good Kirk and a bad Kirk. That’s what I think of with Shatner. Whatever he is in real life, Star Trek would have been nothing without him. And maybe just like Kirk, it takes both the good and bad Shatner to make him who he is.

    As a type of analogy, I will refer to the Clint Eastwood movie 'Gran Torino'.
    Do you remember the scene with the barber? The insults, that weren't really insults?
    An ancient teaching method from the East is to attack the student. It's not done out of hatred or dickery but from love or care. It's intended to improve a person, and can even be seen as a compliment.
    Back in the '80s I was getting my foot in the door in my industry, and I was the butt of everyone's jokes and object of all the practical jokes. An old coworker took me aside and explained that as long as they pranked me and chewed on me I should realize that it meant they LIKED me, and if they ever went silent THEN I should worry!
    Does a person have backbone? Can they be a man, or are they going to require everyone around them to treat them with kid gloves?
    And Kirk did have a 'kid' on his bridge - Chekov (Walter Koenig).

    • @switchbladekid1365
      @switchbladekid1365 Před 6 lety

      The "kid" on Kirk's bridge was almost the same age as Shatner was, although Shatner didn't know it at the time.
      I get your analogy but it almost certainly doesn't apply here. Shatner is known to be a dick; I've talked to one coworker, a former fan and a maitre' d here in LA and all report that he's an exceptionally rude and entitled guy.

    • @agilemind6241
      @agilemind6241 Před 6 lety

      In pretty much any interview with him you can tell he's supremely entitled and self-centred. TBH so it the character of Kirk (tho not as extreme as WFS) so it's perhaps not too surprising.

    Ok Will, as a 54-year old Star Trek fanboy who had learned years ago that Bill and James T Kirk are two very distinct persons your story didn't come as a surprise. What did come as a surprise is your ability to tell a story like this. I thoroughly enjoyed it, albeit three years after you posted it. Nice to hear about backstage TNG from your perspective, much appreciated. Also a bit sad to think about the positive influence a man like Bill could have been, something you seem to have understood much better. The Traveler would never have noticed Bill ;-)

    This video gets an A+...This is the reason I love Star Trek "The Next Generation." Wil's narration of the TNG actors and staff had Wil's back from the Shatner's encounter and to get praise from Gene Roddenberry was the "icing on the cake!" I am also glad that Wiliam Shatner gave Wil a written apology which is OK but a personal appearance would have been much better. Which we did see in this video of Wheaton and Shatner having a drink together. I have been to serveral Star Trek shows and ALL of the cast of Star Trek that I have seen have been respectful to the fans that pay and come to see them.

    Met William Shatner in the ‘70s at a con in Kansas City, Missouri. He was charming and adorable, telling funny stories and being self-deprecating. A friend and I were seated right in front of him. At one point my friend whispered to me, “His ear it pierced, is he gay?” I told her that he was in a new show called Barbary Coast (1975-76) and he sometimes played a pirate. He must have overheard a least part of it because he looked over and winked at me! Throughout the rest of his presentation, he’d glance over often and and flash me quick grins and sly smiles. And as he left the room, he waved directly at me. Well, that was the highlight of any con I ever attended. And, he’ll always have the key to my heart.
