  • After a year of knowing of the cast and a delay, the first teaser trailer for the Super Mario Bros Movie from Illumination has just dropped. How does the trailer stack up, and does the film look like it could be good?

3:22 That Koopa Troopa is actually afraid of the penguins in that scene, not Bowser (although it wasn’t made clear in the trailer)

    Very even-handed trailer review.

Chris Pratt may not sound great in this trailer, but I'm holding off hope that this will improve in future trailers. I heard a little of Italian-Brooklyn accent when he says "Mushroom Kingdom, here we come!"

So far, it's already a lot better than the 1993 movie for sure. Obviously.
But Chris Pratt being Mario is kinda what threw me off a bit. Hence why, fans are threatening that they will resort to watching dubbed versions of the movie instead, as some have pointed out that Mario's European French and Brazilian Portuguese voice actors have it nailed as they got the Italian accent in. Interestingly, Raphael Rossatto, who is Chris Pratt's Brazilian dub artist, is dubbing for Mario in here, and he got the Italian accent in. And for his European French actor Pierre Tessier, he has dubbed for Ryan Reynolds' roles. Including both Deadpool and Pikachu in Detective Pikachu.
But for some reason, no Japanese dub has been showcased for the trailer at this time. But yet, the movie's a co-production between Japan and the USA. France too, since Illunimation's Paris studio is doing most of the work too.
If people have watched Anime with English subtitles, then it seems that this is the start that people will start watching English language movies dubbed in other languages, just to hear the "correct" Mario, that they want the voice as close to Charles Martinet as much as possible.
