Seems not really fair, so this makes me feel a bit better about the world. Even if I can’t get a degree of any kind, I can still educate myself. They can’t take that away from me.

Self Education is the best education! Don’t worry that you can’t get the education others get. The education doesn’t make them special. And educational institutions are inclined to tell you *what* to think instead of how to think well. If you study and maybe even build your own skills you can have a wonderful life without the current cultural education systems ❤

I don’t think we appreciate enough how difficult it is to accurately and concisely relay generalized information of world history that is impactful enough. I want to be a teacher, but sometimes I panic just thinking about going up in front of others and doing a topic justice. While some might consider this boring and sleep inducing, it is quite the opposite if you actually follow and understand what’s being said.

The delivery is a little insipid, but the content is quite impressive, especially on how the curriculum of world history has developed over the past 20 years. That radioactive dating from archeology not only broadened world history but influenced historians to stumble on to notion that the availability of fish protein and not agriculture might be the key why settlements formed around river valleys is astonishing.

Vesto lord They need to take any class in a college or university! The first lecture in any course is almost always an introduction to the subject, including the history thereof. Such an introduction usually lacks any real coverage of the course subject matter. This is beneficial to the students in more ways than one:
      (1) The student is made aware of the study of the subject.
      (2) Any student who does not have their textbook yet, or other course materials, is given the opportunity to procure said materials.
      (3) The student becomes familiar with their professor and his method of instruction and/or personality.

Andhika Yogiswara no need for to be sorry. I am just concerned. I hope you are getting regular sleep since 3 mos ago. over the counter Unisom original, works miracles for insomnia. It's active ingrediant Doxymaline is very effective. Just about all the other over the counter sleep aids contain Diphenhydramine(e.g. Benadryl) or nothing like these snake oil homeopathic products which they make everything from hand cream to cancer cures, all are bullshit....all the diphenhydramine(aka benadryl) otc sleep aids It makes you depressed and causes pain. the Unisom original does not cause cns depression and causes no joint and back pain, etc, but works on the sleep center in your brain and you don't feel that horrible hangover or depression when it starts working.(btw Unisom has like ten different sleep products which are all benadryl. read the fine print) you know even a glass of warm milk can help with sleep. Don't by any of that Homeopathic crap because it has no active ingrediants. if worse comes to worse see a doctor for a temporary sleep aid to get you back into your regular circadian rhythm. please get well my friend....from just another citizen of the world who cares about other people across the world.

    Hello let me introduce myself
I am a 14 year old who Is in love with History but the schools system refuses to teach it to me.Let me explain they will not teach us World History until 10th grade And I am in 8th grade. Have learned all there is to know about American history but nothing about world history. We will also only learn world history for 2 years.2 Years to cover literally everything that has happened in the world until now.I HATE that.I really want to learn about world history and this outraged me to know that we will learn about the world for such a short time.Therefor i would like to thank Columbia University for posting this playlist so I ca really take the world in, and not how the public schools do it.

Uh my history professors were story tellers, they would deliberately suggest controversies to get people to discuss. I never missed even one of their classes. One literally looked like Dumbledore and it felt magical.
And this man is getting my train of thoughts going like on 100 different tracks at the same time.

From a historiographical point this professor makes many valid points. Sadly the rhythm in his speech is not very constant, so many people complain in their comment that it is a boring lecture. Well, if you are actually interested in history and historiography, I think this lecture is not boring at all, above all, I find it exciting that this is available freely on the CZcams.

Fantastic free lecture series, just finished this set and am starting on the next. My only though is that so much time is spent talking about the politics and business decisions of writing the text book itself, that it almost seems as if THAT could be it's own course. "The History of Writing History" or something that deals specifically with those branches of this discussion. I could have done with %20-30 more actual historical event discussion and less "we fought over putting this in or that in", not that those branches aren't interesting in their own right, but they really seemed to derail a lot of these lectures.
Also, big thumbs up for getting the board in the shot when the lecturer is referring to it UNLIKE the videos on the Yale CZcams channel. Get your act together Yale. :D

VJMC Bulliet wrote a textbook and this series is a supplement to reading the text. I assume all his students have read the text, and he is adding perspective in this series of lectures. (I also think they are history majors which is why he talks so much about how historians do their thing!)

    • @Daveinmaine
      @Daveinmaine Před 8 lety +4

+VJMC The "History of writing history" is called Historiography. I took a couple courses on it in grad school. That was actually my favorite part so far. Mostly because I am an AP World History teacher (though I do not use his text) and it was a great insight into the origin of the course. It also fits well into the course he is teaching, which is as much about understanding what the history of the world is as it is about the events of world history

Boring? - no way! - the history teachers teaching history they had never studied, then the committees get into the act, then the textbook publishers ignoring the committee recommendations - a true saga of the American public school system at its worst - think of it as black comedy.

Most classes also require you to read numerous articles, essay and/or books that will give you a full scope of the matter. These lectures are generally a nice (though not completely inclusive) condensation of the subject.
