The OM606 is one of the best diesels out there. Only issue I got with it is Indirect Injection. I've always been about Direct Injection.
True, but easier to fix the problems and more reliable
I think the indirect injection is part of the reason why it revs so high.

We use it for tractorpulling in The Netherlands for the DCPO

I don’t know too much about bmw diesels but these old mercedes diesel engines are very reliable

M57 for a low lag, torquey, fuel efficient daily and OM606 for more of a track car
m57 is great, but newer b57 is very problematic

They don't actually have to be that smokey
They are not smokey at all and on top of that its mechanical injection what do you expect.There are way smokier diesels using electronic injection
