  • Here’s a quick tutorial on how I make my own artist charcoal powder from compressed charcoal sticks super fast and easy!
If you’re like me, charcoal powder can be difficult to come by, so I decided to make my own. I tried filing down compressed charcoal sticks using sand paper or scraping it with a blade, but for me...it’s waaaaay too time consuming! I had an extra coffee/spice grinder and decided to dedicate it to grinding up charcoal (and even graphite!)
    I hope you enjoy!

Nice video. What kind of brushes should I get for charcoal drawing?
    Can you suggest some?

Thank you for this helpful tip! Do you think you could use this method with Inktense Sticks? They used to have a grater for them, but sadly it's no longer available. Would love to be able to get the Inktense grater somewhere! I've been looking at different options & wasn't sure what would work best for me (razor blade, cheese grater (not sure if it'd work), etc.). Think I'll head to secondhand store tomorrow for a coffee grinder. Thanks!

You are very welcome. I’ve never tried that Inktense sticks before, but if they are a chalky type of material, they will likely grind quite well into a powder.

It’s the softest grade and blends easier.
